    Get PDF

Tree aboveground biomass and species richness of the mature tropical forests of Darien, Panama, and their role in global climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation

AbstractThe remote forests of the Darien region in eastern Panama are among the last remnants of relatively undisturbed forest habitat in the Central American isthmus. Despite decades of efforts by the government, nongovernmental organizations, and civil society, including Indigenous peoples, to protect the region's natural heritage, it remains under significant threat due to widespread illegal logging. Now, the Panamanian government is considering the mechanism, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), as another option to limit forest loss. Central to the proper functioning of REDD+ is the need to reduce uncertainties in estimates of aboveground biomass (AGB). These estimates are used to establish realistic reference levels against which additional contributions to reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the loss and degradation of forests can be financially compensated. Also, highly desirable to REDD+ is the achievement of biodiversity cobenefits. REDD+ investments will likely be directed primarily to areas where the potential to simultaneously mitigate climate change and conserve biodiversity is highest. Here, we present the results of a field‐based forest carbon inventorying method tested in Darien's mature forests with the participation of Embera and Wounaan Indigenous peoples. We also explore whether variations in field‐based estimates of AGB across mature forests, in both undisturbed and disturbed areas, are detectable through free and readily‐available remote sensing data sources. Furthermore, we examine and compare AGB and tree species richness in Darien with other well‐studied forest sites across the tropics. Our findings reveal that Darien's forests play a crucial role globally and regionally in storing carbon and housing biodiversity, and support the imperative need to protect these forests in a culturally appropriate manner with the region's Indigenous peoples

Focal Dermal Hypoplasia with Uterus Bicornis and Renal Ectopia: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) is a rare inherited genodermatosis with an X-linked dominant trait. FDH is associated with skin defects and other abnormalities of bone, nails, hair, limbs, teeth and eyes. We present the case of a 26-year-old female in the 27th pregnancy week and a previous history of miscarriage. After careful physical examination and dermal biopsy, histopathology revealed that the patient was a carrier of FDH. This is the first report in the literature describing that FDH is associated with uterus bicornis and renal ectopia. Our association could be attributable to early embryonic abnormalities related with FDH because both the uterus bicornis and the renal ectopia originate around the 3th-6th week of embryonic development. We are unable to confirm that the miscarriages were caused by inherited FDH or that uterus bicornis was the cause. We conducted a literature review using the following terms: FDH, Goltz syndrome, uterus bicornis, and renal ectopia

A Hybrid Intelligent System to Forecast Solar Energy Production

    Get PDF
Manuscrito aceptado[Abstarct]: There is wide acknowledgement that solar energy is a promising and renewable source of electricity. However, complementary sources are sometimes required, due to its limited capacity, in order to satisfy user demand. A Hybrid Intelligent System (HIS) is proposed in this paper to optimize the range of possible solar energy and power grid combinations. It is designed to predict the energy generated by any given solar thermal system. To do so, the novel HIS is based on local models that implement both supervised learning (artificial neural networks) and unsupervised learning (clustering). These techniques are combined and applied to a realworld installation located in Spain. Alternative models are compared and validated in this case study with data from a whole year. With an optimum parameter fit, the proposed system managed to calculate the solar energy produced by the panel with an error that was lower than 10-4 in 86% of cases

This research is framed in the field of social and community psychology, explains through a mixed perspective of research how it is perceived the presence of sexual harassment in users of the services offered by an urban park in the city of Quito, among the months of April and September of the year 2017. The methodological proposal is based on collaborative relationships between researchers, participants and representatives of the public and academic institution. It consists of the joint process of collection, analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data that seek a broad explanation of how sexual harassment is perceived in this public space. The population criterion corresponds to men and women from 12 years and older who make regular use of the services and spaces provided by this Quito urban park. In order to obtain contextual references about the problem, we included the group of cultural mediators and sports instructors involved in the daily activities of the users in the park. Our results indicate that the presence of sexual harassment in this urban park of Quito is perceived mostly through insistent glances, obscene comments, unpleasant compliments, sexist ridicule about the body and invasive approach to personal space, mainly against young women / adults and men young boys

Expansion for the solutions of the Bogomolny equations on the torus

We show that the solutions of the Bogomolny equations for the Abelian Higgs model on a two-dimensional torus, can be expanded in powers of a quantity epsilon measuring the departure of the area from the critical area. This allows a precise determination of the shape of the solutions for all magnetic fluxes and arbitrary position of the Higgs field zeroes. The expansion is carried out to 51 orders for a couple of representative cases, including the unit flux case. We analyse the behaviour of the expansion in the limit of large areas, in which case the solutions approach those on the plane. Our results suggest convergence all the way up to infinite area.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, slightly revised version as published in JHE

    Get PDF
Apps are used by university libraries to disseminate their collections and services. In 2011 the University of Salamanca (USAL) launched the first mobile app for libraries in Spanish-speaking regions: Biblio USAL. Usage data was gathered for this app (2011-2015) and analyzed and compared to that of the university library’s mobile website. The findings show a preference for adapted web versions and the need to offer new generation apps that provide services not featured on the website

    Get PDF

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Studies in mammary cancer demonstrated that moderately high concentrations of molecular iodine (I2) have a antiproliferative and apoptotic effect either <it>in vivo </it>as <it>in vitro</it>, however the cellular intermediated involved in these effects has not been elucidated.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Virgin Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with methyl-nitrosourea (MNU: single dose ip, 50 mg/Kg bw) and the participation of arachidonic acid (AA) and PPAR receptors in the antineoplasic effect of I2 where analyzed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>I2-treated rats for four weeks exhibited a significant reduction in the incidence (62.5 vs. 100%) and size (0.87 ± 0.98 vs 1.96 ± 1.5 cm3) of mammary tumors. HPLC analysis showed that tumoral but not normal mammary tissue contained an elevated basal concentration of AA and significantly more AA-iodinated called 6-iodolactone (6-IL) after chronic I2 treatment. Tumors from I2-treated rats showed fewer cells positive to proliferating cell nuclear antigen, lower blood vessel density, as well as decreases in vascular endothelial growth factor, urokinase-type plasminogen activator, and PPAR type alpha (PPARα). These same tumors showed increases in the cell death markers, TUNEL-positive cells (p < 0.05) and the enzyme caspase-3 (trend), as well as significant induction of PPAR type gamma (PPARγ).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Together, these data demonstrate that the antineoplasic effect of iodine involves 6-IL formation and PPARγ induction.</p
