Hydrocarbon chain conformation in an intercalated surfactant monolayer and bilayer

    Get PDF
Cetyl trimethyl ammonium (CTA) ions have been confined within galleries of layered CdPS3 at two different grafting densities. Low grafting densities are obtained on direct intercalation of CTA ions into CdPS3 to give Cd0.93PS3(CTA)0.14. Intercalation occurs with a lattice expansion of 4.8 Ã… with the interlamellar surfactant ion lying flat forming a monolayer. Intercalation at higher grafting densities was effected by a two-step ion-exchange process to give Cd0.83PS3(CTA)0.34, with a lattice expansion of 26.5 Ã…. At higher grafting densities the interlamellar surfactant ions adopt a tilted bilayer structure. 13C NMR and orientation-dependent IR vibrational spectroscopy on single crystals have been used to probe the conformation and orientation of the methylene 'tail' of the intercalated surfactant in the two phases. In the monolayer phase, the confined methylene chain adopts an essentially all-trans conformation with most of the trans chain aligned parallel to the gallery walls. On lowering the temperature, molecular plane aligns parallel, so that the methylene chain lies flat, rigid and aligned to the confining surface. In the bilayer phase, most bonds in the methylene chain are in trans conformation. It is possible to identify specific conformational sequences containing a gauche bond, in the interior and termini of the intercalated methylene. These high energy conformers disappear on cooling leaving all fifteen methylene units of the intercalated cetyl trimethyl ammonium ion in trans conformational registry at 40 K

A laboratory experiment was carried out in the Department of Seed Science and Technology, College of Agriculture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur to study the effect of seed polymer coating with micronutrients and foliar spray on the resultant seed quality parameters of chickpea. Among the seventeen different treatments, resultant chickpea seeds obtained from treatment polymer coated seeds (each@ 6 ml/kg of seed) along with the combination of micronutrients viz.,ZnSO4 + Boron + Ammonium molybdate + FeSO4 ( each @ 2 g/kg of seed ) and two foliar sprays (0.5 % + 0.2 % + 0.1% + 0.5 %, respectively, except ZnSO4 and FeSO4 in EDTA form) at an interval of 10 days during flowering stage (50 and 60 days after sowing) recorded significantly highest hundred seed weight (25.9 g), germination (97.00 %), speed of germination (18.50), shoot length (8.43 cm), root length (19.80 cm), seedling dry weight (43.30 mg) and seedling vigour index (2738) compared to all other treatments and control (23.6 g, 92.05 %, 13.74, 5.48 cm, 16.30 cm, 34.00 mg and 2004, respectively) and hence above treatment combinations can be used in order to produce good quality seeds

Functionalization of the internal surfaces of layered cadmium thiophosphate with cationic surfactants: adsolubilization of uncharged organic molecules

    Get PDF
Ion-exchange intercalation of the cationic surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium in layered CdPS3 leads to the formation of an intercalated bilayer within the galleries, thereby converting the internal surface of the layers from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Several uncharged organic 'guest' molecules were found to be solubilized in the intercalated bilayer 'host'

Particle Motion and Scalar Field Propagation in Myers-Perry Black Hole Spacetimes in All Dimensions

We study separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi and massive Klein-Gordon equations in the general Myers-Perry black hole background in all dimensions. Complete separation of both equations is carried out in cases when there are two sets of equal black hole rotation parameters, which significantly enlarges the rotational symmetry group. We explicitly construct a nontrivial irreducible Killing tensor associated with the enlarged symmetry group which permits separation. We also derive first-order equations of motion for particles in these backgrounds and examine some of their properties.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX2

Performance evaluation of a common effluent treatment plant for tannery industries

    Get PDF
Tannery is one of the oldest industries in the world and is one of the fastest developing industries in India. It is one of the problematic industries in India which generate high quantum of wastewater with high TDS and toxicity due to chromium. Hence, discharge of tannery effluent is a very serious issue. Many conventional treatment processes has been carried out in these industry before the discharge of effluent. One of the most common treatment process applied is biological treatment process by activated sludge process and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket process. Due to the high cost of installation for this treatment process, in many of the small scale tannery industries in India, the wastewater treatment is carried out in common effluent treatment plant (CETP). In the present study the performance of CETP for tannery effluent in terms of Biological oxygen demand (BOD),  Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Total suspended solids (TSS), Total dissolved solids (TDS), and by water tracer studies using Rhodamine. ETP showed a removal efficiency of BOD-66%, COD- 21%, TSS-21% and TDS-5%. The study revealed that ETP has to be redesigned based on the characteristics of influent wastewater in order to meet the Pollution Control Board prescribed standard limits for ETP.  &nbsp

    Get PDF
An experiment was conducted to study the influence of modified atmospheric storage conditions on biochemical parameters of pigeonpea seeds. The experiment was conducted at the Department of Seed Science and Technology, College of Agriculture, Raichur, Karnataka. The seeds are exposed to various gaseous combinationsand stored in 700 gauge polyethylene bag for ten months during July-2012 to April- 2013. The results revealed that, the seeds exposed to gaseous combination of 40% N2+00% O2+ 60% CO2 showed less reduction in dehydrogenase enzyme activity and protein content (0.276 OD (optical density) value, 19.33 % respectively) as compared to the control (0.211 OD value and 18.13 % respectively) after ten months of storage. In addition less seed leachate (2.029 dSm-1) was recorded in gaseous combination of 40% N2+00% O2+ 60% CO2 as compared to control (2.207dSm-1). It indicates the potential use of modified atmospheric storage technology for maintenance of seed viability and vigour during storage in pulses

An investigation was undertaken to study the effect of foliar sprays of NAA, triacontanol and boron on vine growth, seed quality and storability in bitter gourd cv. Pusa Visesh. Results revealed that NAA at 50mg/l produced the longest vines (192.33 and 260.67cm), maximum leaf area (1.890 and 2.965cm2/vine), leaf area index (1.969 and 2.760) and leaf chlorophyll content (39.23 and 38.90 SPAD value) at 85 and 100 days after sowing (DAS), respectively. As for seed quality attributes, treatment with boron at 4mg/l recorded lowest seed moisture content and highest seed germination percentage (9.16% and 85.5%, respectively), followed by NAA at 50mg/l (9.21% and 85.25%, respectively) whereas, Control recorded highest seed moisture and lowest seed germination percentage (9.84% and 74.5%, respectively) recorded at the end of storage

A laboratory study was undertaken to know the effect of seed polymer coating with Zn and Fe nanoparticles (NPs) at different concentration (10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 ppm) in pigeonpea at Department of Seed Science and Technology, UAS, Raichur. Among the treatments seed polymer coating with Zn NPs at 750 ppm recorded significantly higher seed germination (96.00 %), seedling length (26.63 cm), seedling dry weight (85.00 mg), speed of germination (32.95), field emergence (89.67 %), seedling vigour index (2556), dehydrogenase activity (0.975 OD value) and ?-amylase activity (25.67 mm) and lowest abnormal seedlings (2.50 %) over their bulk forms and control followed by Fe and Zn NPs at 500 ppm. However, in contrast to beneficial effects, these NPs also shown inhibitory effect on germination and seedling growth at higher concentration (nano Zn >750 ppm and nano Fe > 500 ppm). Hence, from the results it is concluded that Zn NPs at 750 ppm can be used to enhance quality of the pigeonpea seeds

    Get PDF
The present study was conducted to know the storage potential of organically produced paddy seeds in the Department of Seed Science and Technology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur. The seed lot were divided into two parts, one part was stored in cloth bag for a period of 12 months under ambient conditions. At thesame time another set of seeds were subjected to accelerated ageing at 42 + 10C temperature and 90 per cent relative humidity (RH) for a period of 0-12 days. Among the ageing methods, artificially aged seeds showed drastic decreases in seed quality as compared to natural ageing. Among the treatments T9 (37.5 % FYM + 37.5 % vermicompost + 25 % neem cake + foliar spray of panchagavya on 30, 60, 90 and 120 DAT) recorded significantly highest seed quality parameters viz., seed germination (97.81 %), seedling length (29.42 cm) and SVI (2878) at initial stage in both the method of aging and at the end of storage period; seed germination (71.23 and 87.33 %), seedling length (19.66 and 27.00 cm) and SVI (1400 and 2358) in accelerated ageing (AA) and natural ageing (NA) respectively, whereas, lowest in control (Inorganic treatment). The seed quality parameters of four days of AA were similar to that of six months of NA. Hence, storability of organically produced paddy seeds were better as compared to inorganic seeds and it can be predicted that four days of AA is equal to six months of NA. The information generated will be useful in retention or disposal of a particular variety or seed lot
