MICROFACIES CHARACTERISTICS OF CARBONATE COBBLE FROM CAMPANIAN OF SLOVENJ GRADEC (SLOVENIA): IMPLICATIONS FOR DETERMINING THE FLEURYANA ADRIATICA DE CASTRO, DROBNE AND GUŠIĆ PALEONICHE AND EXTENDING THE BIOSTRATIGRAPHIC RANGE IN THE TETHYAN REALM

U potoku blizu izdanka s kampanskim naslagama u području Slovenj Gradeca uzet je uzorak dimenzija krupnoga šljunka s fosilnim ostatcima puževa roda Trochachtaeon. A carbonate cobble was collected in a creek near Slovenj Gradec (Slovenia). It comprises Trochactaeon gastropods as well as foraminifera Fleuryana adriatica and Cuneolina ketini from a subtidal environment with agglutinated and porcelaneous benthic foraminifera. Packstone-grainstone of the structural type contains the abovementioned foraminiferal taxa, which are previously undetermined in this part of the Upper Cretaceous Tethyan realm. Stratigraphic data from this area, together with the determined microfossil assemblage of the carbonate cobble, indicate the upper part of Lower Campanian age, implying an extension of the F. adriatica and C. ketini stratigraphic range. The paleoniche within the Tethyan realm in which F. adriatica thrive is the shallowest part of the subtidal, close to peritidal conditions. It was developed on a relatively harder substrate that resulted from a laterally more pronounced paleorelief which enabled the shifting of hyaline benthic foraminifers towards the shallowest part of the subtidal. Their paleoniche is laterally absent from protected paleoenvironments with soft muddy substrate and a relatively high carbonate sedimentation rate, colonized with elevator rudists, as well as from relatively higher water energy paleoenvironments with completely hard grainstone-rudstone substrate

A nautiloid from Middle Eocene beds at Grdoselo in Istria, Croatia

    No full text
Treated are remains of a stone core of phragmocone of an Eocene nautiloid of species Aturia cf. ziczac (Sowerby,1812) from Grdoselo in central Istria, western Croatia. Remains of Aturia occur in a calcareous sandstone horizonof the Pazin flysch basin megasequence. In these beds occur abundant sea urchins of genera Ecinolampas and Cyclaster, and much less frequent specimens of genera Macropneustes and Conoclypus. Of mollusks are normally foundonly their stone cores. The relatively modest diversity of sea urchins, high numbers of individual species and totalabsence of corals might indicate that organisms of this locality most probably remained near their original livingenvironment, without a sign of allochthonicity

Revision of new species of Eocene sea urchins from Istria, described in the 19th and 20th centuries

In paper are presented drawings and pictures of sea urchins from original works of authors who determined and documented new species from Istria. TARAMELLI (1874), BITTNER (1880), OPPENHEIM (1901), TONIOLO (1909) and DEGLI INNOCENTI (1924 a, b) established in Paleogene beds of Istria 18 new species of Eocene sea urchins. Determined were four species of regular sea urchins of genera Stereocidaris, Phyllacanthus, “Eucidaris” and Arachniopleurus, and fourteen species of irregular sea urchins of nine genera - Conoclypus, Echinolampas, Rhyncholampas,Gitolampas, Ditremaster, Pericosmus, Prenaster, Brissopsis and Cyclaster. The highest species diversity was recorded within genus Echinolampas. New sea urchins species originate prevailingly in the Middle Eocene – Lutetian beds of localities in the narrower and broader surroundings of Koper, Buzet, Roč, Grdoselo, Pazin, Pićan, Ćepić and Labin

The serpulid worm Rotularia spirulaea from Eocene beds near Gračišće in Istria, Croatia

In paper several selected specimens of sedentary Polychaetes of species Rotularia spirulaea (Lamarck, 1818) are presented. They were found in Middel Eocene – Lutetian calcareous breccias and conglomerates, respectively olistostromes, below the village of Gračišće near Pazin in Istria (Croatia). The rare individuals are of various shapes and sizes, and they occur among numerous nummulitines, corals, molluscs, echinoderms, bryozoans, lithothamnias and other fossil remains. The mentioned rocks and their contents are constituting parts of the Istrian Paleogene basins, in this istance of the Pazin flysch basin

Pannonian molluscs from surroundings of Čanje near Sevnica, Slovenia

Discussed are Pannonian molluscs found in the surroundings of Čanje near Sevnica. Prevailing are gastropods of the genus Melanopsis and some rare specimens of the genera Theodoxus, Congeria and Lymnocardium. The most abundant are specimens of the speciesMelanopsis vindobonensis Fuchs, 1870. Found species and sub-species determine the Lower Pannonian age of the rocks. Molluscs in the Upper Miocene rocks at Čanje can be compared with the Pannonian molluscs of the Vienna Basin and some other sites in the Central Paratethys

Lophoranina marestiana from Middle Eocene flysch beds at Gračišće in Istria, Croatia

In paper the crab of species Lophoranina marestiana (König, 1825) is described. It was found in a nummulitic olistostrome of Lower Lutetian flysch beds at the Gračišće hamlet near Pazin in Istria. Individuals of the described taxon are very rare in the locality

Correction of the species name of Tertiary mammal from Motnik in Slovenia

In the paper the erroneous attribution of species name for a Tertiary mammal from Motnik is discussed. Heissig (1990) 15 year ago incorrectly named it after Slavonia Anthracohyus slavonicus, instead of correctly after Slovenia Anthracohyus slovenicus
