The Petrochemistry of Jake_M: A Martian Mugearite

“Jake_M,” the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).</jats:p

Mars’ Surface Radiation Environment Measured with the Mars Science Laboratory’s Curiosity Rover

The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on the Mars Science Laboratory’s Curiosity rover began making detailed measurements of the cosmic ray and energetic particle radiation environment on the surface of Mars on 7 August 2012. We report and discuss measurements of the absorbed dose and dose equivalent from galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles on the martian surface for ~300 days of observations during the current solar maximum. These measurements provide insight into the radiation hazards associated with a human mission to the surface of Mars and provide an anchor point with which to model the subsurface radiation environment, with implications for microbial survival times of any possible extant or past life, as well as for the preservation of potential organic biosignatures of the ancient martian environment.</jats:p

No full text
Metric properties of an operator of Gankel, the best rational approximations of analytical functions are considered in the paper aiming at the speed investigation of the rational approximation for various classes of analytical functions, properties of an operator of Gankel. As a result the correctness of the hypothesis of A.A. Gonchar about the upper estimation for a low limit of the speed for the best rational approximations has been shown. The connection between singular numbers of an operator of Genkel and the best approximations haa been investigated. All results are the new results. The paper results may find their field of application in theory of functions, theory of the approximation of analytical functions by polynomials and rational functionsAvailable from VNTIC / VNTIC - Scientific & Technical Information Centre of RussiaSIGLERURussian Federatio

Identification of an Unknown Substance by the Methods of Multi-Energy Pulse X-ray Tomography

No full text
The inverse problem for the non-stationary radiative transfer equation is considered, which consists in finding the attenuation coefficient according to the pulsed multi-energy X-ray exposure. For a short duration of the probing pulse, the asymptotic solution of the inverse problem is found. The problem of identifying an unknown substance by attenuation coefficients approximately found on a finite set of energy values is formulated. Algorithms for solving identification problems are proposed. The results of the numerical simulation are presented for a wide range of substances of interest in medical computed tomography

Pre-trial agreement on cooperation in russia and abroad

The article presents the results of a comparative legal analysis of the institute of pre-trial cooperation agreements in the criminal procedure legislation of foreign states. It is concluded that the specifics of the conclusion of this agreement and its subsequent implementation depend on the type of legal system and the nature of national criminal procedure legislation of each country. By its nature, the Russian institute of pre-trial cooperation agreement is similar to a number of conciliation procedures of the continental legal system, but it has distinctive features due to the peculiarities of domestic legislation.</jats:p

Terahertz-infrared electrodynamics of overdoped manganites La1-xCaxMnO3

We have measured low-temperature terahertz and infrared spectra of La1-xCa xMnO3 with x = 0.5; 0.6; 2/3, 0.7; 3/4, 0.85; 0.9; 0.95; 0.98 and x = 1 in the form of ceramics and epitaxial films. In the charge-ordered state for commensurate dopings (x = 2/3 and 3/4), we observed an absorption band at frequencies corresponding to the position of the lowest energy van Hove singularity in the folded Brillouin zone. The band is assigned to the boson peak. We observed qualitatively the same boson peak in Raman spectra of La1/3Ca2/3MnO3 ceramics. In antiferromagnetic phase, for the 0.5 <= x < 0.85 range of doping, the conductivity mechanism gradually changes from a hopping-like transport at low temperatures to the Drude behavior at elevated temperatures in the paramagnetic phase. For 0.85 <= x < 1 (canted antiferromagnetic phase), the electrons behave as Drude-like carriers in the whole temperature interval 5-300K.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) [DR228/36
