Quasars Clustering at z approx 3 on Scales less sim 10 h^{-1} Mpc
We test the hypothesis whether high redshift QSOs would preferentially appear
in small groups or pairs, and if they are associated with massive, young
clusters. We carried out a photometric search for \Ly emitters on scales
Mpc, in the fields of a sample of 47 known
QSOs. Wide and narrow band filter color-magnitude diagrams were generated for
each of the fields. A total of 13 non resolved objects with a
significant color excess were detected as QSO candidates at a redshift similar
to that of the target. All the candidates are significantly fainter than the
reference QSOs, with only 2 of them within 2 magnitudes of the central object.
Follow-up spectroscopic observations have shown that 5, i.e., about 40% of the
candidates, are QSOs at the same redshift of the target; 4 are QSOs at
different z (two of them probably being a lensed pair at z = 1.47); 2
candidates are unresolved HII galaxies at z0.3; one unclassified and one
candidate turned out to be a CCD flaw. These data indicate that at least 10% of
the QSOs at z3 do have companions.
We have also detected a number of resolved, rather bright \Ly Emitter
Candidates. Most probably a large fraction of them might be bright galaxies
with [OII] emission, at z 0.3. The fainter population of our
candidates corresponds to the current expectations. Thus, there are no strong
indication for the existence of an overdensity of \Ly galaxies brighter than m

The Social Dimensions of Adaptation to Climate Change in Mozambique
The purpose of the Economics of Adaptation to Climate Change (EACC) study is to better understand and estimate the true costs of adapting to climate change in less developed countries. The study is made up of three components. At a global level, there is an analysis of costs across different economic sectors. At a country level, there is an economic component and a social component, taking place in a set of representative case study countries. Mozambique is one of these countries. The economic component of the Mozambique country study has the objective of identifying a set of robust adaptation options for the country, then comparing the direct costs and benefits of those options. To calculate the costs, the team has utilized a computable general equilibrium method. This method is data intensive, it requires a good model of the national economy, but can generate an estimate of the costs of targeted government interventions, in terms of reduced overall economic growth, once those effects have trickled through the labor and capital markets and the economy has returned to equilibrium. The economic team considered a range of adaptation options, which were gathered from the literature and from interactions with national level policy makers and other stakeholders
Superconductivity and charge carrier localization in ultrathin bilayers
/ (LSCO15/LCO) bilayers
with a precisely controlled thickness of N unit cells (UCs) of the former and M
UCs of the latter ([LSCO15\_N/LCO\_M]) were grown on (001)-oriented {\slao}
(SLAO) substrates with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). X-ray diffraction and
reciprocal space map (RSM) studies confirmed the epitaxial growth of the
bilayers and showed that a [LSCO15\_2/LCO\_2] bilayer is fully strained,
whereas a [LSCO15\_2/LCO\_7] bilayer is already partially relaxed. The
\textit{in situ} monitoring of the growth with reflection high energy electron
diffraction (RHEED) revealed that the gas environment during deposition has a
surprisingly strong effect on the growth mode and thus on the amount of
disorder in the first UC of LSCO15 (or the first two monolayers of LSCO15
containing one plane each). For samples grown in pure
gas (growth type-B), the first LSCO15 UC next to the SLAO
substrate is strongly disordered. This disorder is strongly reduced if the
growth is performed in a mixture of and gas
(growth type-A). Electric transport measurements confirmed that the first UC of
LSCO15 next to the SLAO substrate is highly resistive and shows no sign of
superconductivity for growth type-B, whereas it is superconducting for growth
type-A. Furthermore, we found, rather surprisingly, that the conductivity of
the LSCO15 UC next to the LCO capping layer strongly depends on the thickness
of the latter. A LCO capping layer with 7~UCs leads to a strong localization of
the charge carriers in the adjacent LSCO15 UC and suppresses superconductivity.
The magneto-transport data suggest a similarity with the case of weakly hole
doped LSCO single crystals that are in a so-called {"{cluster-spin-glass
state}"
