Inter-cultural differences in response to a computer-based anti-bullying intervention
Background and purpose: Many holistic anti-bullying interventions have been attempted, with mixed success, while little work has been done to promote a 'self-help' approach to victimisation. The rise of the ICT curriculum and computer support in schools now allows for approaches that benefit from technology to be implemented. This study evaluates the cross-cultural effects of a computer-based anti-bullying intervention on primary school-aged children's knowledge about bullying and relevant coping strategies.
Programme description: FearNot! is an interactive computer-based virtual learning environment designed for use as an anti-bullying intervention. It includes interactive virtual agents who assume the most common participant roles found in episodes of bullying. FearNot! was used by children over three consecutive weeks to allow its effectiveness to be evaluated in a longitudinal in situ programme.
Sample: Two comparable samples were drawn from the UK and Germany. In the UK, 651 participants (aged 8-11) were recruited from primary schools in Hertfordshire, Coventry and Warwickshire, whereas the 535 German participants (aged 7-10) were sourced from Grundschulen in the Bayern and Hessen regions. Because of lack of parental consent, late joiners and absences/missing responses, data from 908 participants (UK 493; Germany 415) were analysed.
Design and methods: A quasi-experimental, pre/post-tests control group design employed pre-published and bespoke questionnaires to collect data. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted.
Results: UK students possessed higher coping strategy knowledge scores than German participants, but German children's scores improved over time and as a result of the FearNot! intervention.
Conclusions: Overall, while not effective at increasing children's coping strategy knowledge in this study, the FearNot! intervention could prove a useful classroom tool to approach the issue of bullying as part of a wider initiative. Cultural differences at baseline and reactions to the intervention are discussed

Thermodynamical features of multifragmentation in peripheral Au + Au Collisions at 35 A.MeV
The distribution of fragments produced in events involving the
multifragmentation of excited sources is studied for peripheral Au + Au
reactions at 35 A.MeV.
The Quasi-Projectile has been reconstructed from its de-excitation products.
An isotropic emission in its rest frame has been observed, indicating that an
equilibrated system has been formed. The excitation energy of the
Quasi-Projectile has been determined via calorimetry.
A new event by event effective thermometer is proposed based on the energy
balance. A peak in the energy fluctuations is observed related to the heat
capacity, suggesting that the system undergoes a liquid-gas type phase
transition at an excitation energy about 5 A.MeV and a temperature 4 - 6 MeV,
dependent on the freeze-out hypothesis. By analyzing different regions of the
Campi-plot, the events associated with the liquid and gas phases as well as the
critical region are thermodynamically characterized.
The critical exponents, tau, beta,gamma, extracted from the high moments of

Biogeography and Character Evolution of the Ciliate Genus Euplotes (Spirotrichea, Euplotia), with Description of Euplotes curdsi sp. nov.
Ciliates comprise a diverse and ecologically important phylum of unicellular protists. One of
the most specious and best-defined genera is Euplotes, which constitutes more than 70
morphospecies, many of which have never been molecularly tested. The increasing number
of described Euplotes taxa emphasizes the importance for detailed characterizations of
new ones, requiring standardized morphological observations, sequencing of molecular
markers and careful comparison with previous literature. Here we describe Euplotes curdsi
sp. nov., distinguishable by the combination of the following features: 45±65 Όm length,
oval or elongated shape with both ends rounded, narrow peristome with 25±34 adoral
membranelles, conspicuous paroral membrane, double-eurystomus dorsal argyrome type,
6±7 dorsolateral kineties and 10 frontoventral cirri. Three populations of the novel species
have been found in brackish and marine samples in the Mediterranean and the White Sea.
We provide the SSU rRNA gene sequences of these populations, and an updated phylogeny
of the genus Euplotes. Using the molecular phylogenetic tree, we inferred aspects of
the biogeographical history of the genus and the evolution of its most important taxonomic
characters in order to provide a frame for future descriptions. Ultimately, these data reveal
recurrent trends of freshwater invasion and highlight the dynamic, yet convergent, morphological
evolution of Euplotes
Humanitarian organizations' information practices : procedures and privacy concerns for serving the undocumented
Many humanitarian organizations in the United States work with the information of undocumented migrants to help them secure services that might otherwise be unattainable to them. Information and communication technologies can help their work, but can also significantly exacerbate the risks that undocumented individuals are facing, and expose them to security breakages, leaks, hacks, inadvertent disclosure, and courts requests. This study aims to provide a preliminary understanding of the information practices and systems that US humanitarian organizations employ to protect the privacy of the undocumented individuals they serve. To do so, we conducted interviews and an analysis of organizations' working documents within humanitarian organizations on the US West Coast, including advocacy groups and organizations with ties to higher education. Our outcomes show gaps between current legal standards, technology best practices, and the dayâtoâday functioning of the organizations. We contend the necessity of support to humanitarian organizations in further developing standards and training for digital privacy
Isotope analysis in central heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies
Symmetry energy is a key quantity in the study of the equation of state of
asymmetric nuclear matter. Heavy ion collisions at low and intermediate
energies, performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro and Laboratori Nazionali
del Sud, can be used to extract information on the symmetry energy coefficient
Csym, which is currently poorly known but relevant both for astrophysics and

From a certain point of view: sensory phenomenological envisionings of running space and place
The precise ways in which we go about the mundane, repetitive, social actions of everyday life are central concerns of ethnographers and theorists working within the traditions of the sociology of the mundane and sociological phenomenology. In this article, we utilize insights derived from sociological phenomenology and the newly developing field of sensory sociology to investigate a particular, mundane, and embodied social practice, that of training for distance running in specific places: our favored running routes. For, despite a growing body of ethnographic studies of particular sports, little analytic attention has been devoted to the actual, concrete practices of âdoingâ or âproducingâ sporting activity, particularly from a sensory ethnographic perspective. Drawing upon data from a 2-year joint autoethnographic research project, here we explore the visual dimension, focusing upon three key themes in relation to our runnersâ visualization of, respectively, (1) hazardous places, (2) performance places, (3) the timeâspaceâplace nexus
Doing audio-visual montage to explore time and space: The everyday rhythms of Billingsgate Fish Market
This article documents, shows and analyses the everyday rhythms of Billingsgate, Londonâs wholesale fish market. It takes the form of a short film based an audio-visual montage of time-lapse photography and sound recordings, and a textual account of the dimensions of market life revealed by this montage. Inspired by Henri Lefebvreâs Rhythmanalysis, and the embodied experience of moving through and sensing the market, the film renders the elusive quality of the market and the work that takes place within it to make it happen. The composite of audio-visual recordings immerses viewers in the space and atmosphere of the market and allows us to perceive and analyse rhythms, patterns, flows, interactions, temporalities and interconnections of market work, themes that this article discusses. The film is thereby both a means of showing market life and an analytic tool for making sense of it. This article critically considers the documentation, evocation and analysis of time and space in this way
