La mise en valeur de la plaine du Ghâb dans l’Antiquité. Étude du paysage rural d’Apamée de Syrie

Les sources antiques et contemporaines célèbrent unanimement la fertilité et les nombreuses productions de la plaine du Ghâb, la campagne occidentale d’Apamée (Syrie du Nord-Ouest). Cependant, aucune étude n’a jusqu’à présent tenté de comprendre les modalités relatives au développement de cette contrée durant l’époque romano-byzantine. Sur la base d’un recensement exhaustif des sources littéraires, une césure peut être globalement décelée à l’époque sévérienne, période à partir de laquelle on assiste à un changement de discours qu’expliquent la disparition de la mention des amples marécages qui couvraient le Ghâb et, en parallèle, la récurrence des témoignages qui évoquent la prospérité de la plaine issue de sa mise en culture. Cette «  évolution » laisse transparaître l’entreprise de travaux d’assainissement qui pourraient, dans une certaine mesure, être liés aux guerres parthiques de la fin du iie et de la première moitié du iiie s. Après avoir soulevé l’hypothèse d’une irrigation ponctuelle de cette étendue, l’étude retrace les principales productions qui caractérisaient la basse plaine apaméenne durant l’Antiquité tardive. C’est de cette époque que le Ghâb a tiré sa réputation de fertilité.The Ghâb, the Apamean western countryside (Northwestern Syria), is known since Antiquity as a wealthy region. However, no study has so far attempted to understand the development of this territory during the Roman and Byzantine periods. A rupture can be identified among the literary mentions that deal with this area and be placed during the Severian era ca. This modification comes from the disappearing of the marshland’s evocations and the new assertion of its wealth derived from its cultivations. We enquire therefore whether this rupture can be explained by works undertaken to purge this Apamean countryside and to what extent a relationship could be seen with the Parthian wars launched from the late 2nd century ad onwards. This work deals subsequently with the hypothetic small scale irrigation and the identification of the major Ghâb productions during Late Antiquity. It’s from this period that the Ghâb has ensured its fertility reputation.خلاصة – تجمع المصادر القديمة والمعاصرة على الاحتفاء بالخصوبة والمنتجات العديدة لهضبة الغاب، التي تشكل الريف الغربي لآفاميا (شمال غرب سوريا). إلا أنه وإلى يومنا لم تحاول أي دراسة أن تفهم الأنماط الخاصة بإنماء هذه المنطقة خلال الحقبة الرومانية البيزنطية. وبناء على إحصاء شامل للمصادر الأدبية، يمكن في العموم التماس تقطع في صيرورة الحقبة السيفيرية، وهي الفترة التي بدأنا نشاهد فيها تغيرا في الخطابات التي تفسر اختفاء المستنقعات الشاسعة التي كانت تغطي منطقة الغاب. كما أننا نشهد بموازاة ذلك تكرار الشهادات التي تستحضر ازدهار الهضبة نتيجة أنشطتها الزراعية. ويظهر هذا «  التطوير » اتخاذ إجراءات نزح المياه التي يمكن إلى حد ما أن تكون مرتبطة بالحروب مع الفرس في نهاية القرن الثاني والنصف الأول من القرن الثالث الميلادي. وبعد أن طرحت فرضية الري المحدد لهذه المنطقة، تعيد الدراسة تحديد المنتجات التي ميزت الهضبة الآفامية المنخفضة خلال العصور القديمة المتأخرة. وقد اشتهرت منطقة الغاب بالخصوبة منذ تلك الفترة
