Leader Self-Perceptions of Ethics In and Out of the Workplace and Personal Trustworthiness
Ethical breaches in many organizations can be traced to failures in ethical leadership, which undermine trust. If a leader\u27s ethical behavior in their private life and settings is perceived as influencing workplace ethics, it may in turn affect organizational trust levels and the development of trust. A quantitative study based on the social learning and moral theory was conducted to determine whether a difference exists between a leader\u27s self-perceptions of their ethical behaviors inside and outside of the workplace, and whether it affects their perceived personal trustworthiness. Participants\u27 (N = 94) scores on work and nonwork versions of the ethical leadership scale were compared using a paired-samples t test, which determined no significant differences in their ethical behaviors inside and outside of the workplace. Then multiple regression analyses were conducted, which indicated that the model containing both independent variables regarding ethical behavior inside and outside the workplace significantly predicted changes in the dependent variable personal trustworthiness: F (7, 86) = 6.025, p \u3c .001. The model explained 27% of the variance in personal trustworthiness. The model also significantly predicted changes in scores related to propensity to trust; F (10, 83) = 3.692, p \u3c .001. The model explained 23% of the variance in propensity to trust. This research will aid leaders in understanding more about the perception of their own ethics and how this plays into the cultivation of trust. It also has implications that may influence leadership among all types of work environs, including government organizations and industry
The Image of Mexican Heroes in American Films
As historical recreations of Mexican history, the motion pictures Juárez (1939) and Viva Zapata! (1952) can undoubtedly be faulted. Although some have argued that they capture the spirit or the essence of the dramas they depict, factual errors, as we presently seem to understand those facts, are obvious in each film, as is a misplaced overall emphasis which endows these Mexican heroes with characteristics and motives they hardly possessed. But such criticism comes easy and misses the point. The movies were never intended as near-factual historical representations. Juárez and Zapata were instead deliberately tailored to fit contemporary concerns in United States society and the movie industry itself, thereby making each film a fascinating document for the study of that period in which they were produced. As historical recreations of Mexican history, the motion pictures Juárez (1939) and Viva Zapata! The Korean Reconciliation Treaty and the German Basic Treaty: Comparable Foundations for Unification?
With the end of the Cold War, the North-South Korean relationship has been the focus of increasing attention in the international community. In 1991, after years of tense and hostile relations, the two states adopted the Korean Reconciliation Treaty. To assess the prospects for successful reunification of the two Koreas through the Treaty, this comment compares it with the German Basic Treaty of 1984, which promotes similar goals of reunification of divided states. The comparison shows that the German Treaty has been more successful in facilitating unification, due largely to its relative flexibility in implementation. This comment proposes that the two Koreas might achieve greater cooperation through more flexible implementation of the Reconciliation Treaty, particularly with respect to its provisions on cross-border communication

Translation of the diabetes prevention program to the community: evaluation of implementation issues
INTRODUCTION: Clinical trials around the world have demonstrated that behavioral lifestyle interventions can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. In the United States, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) lifestyle intervention significantly reduced the incidence of diabetes by 58% compared to a control group and prompted the implementation of numerous community based translations. However, questions concerning intervention implementation in the community remain. The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate some of these translation-related issues. Specifically, the ability of non-invasive screening methods to identify high-risk participants and the impact of pre-intervention delays and participant willingness to engage in healthy lifestyle practices on outcomes are examined.
METHODS: The foundation of this dissertation is data from an NIH-funded randomized delayed control group trial evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of the DPP Group Lifestyle Balance (DPP-GLB) program, a direct adaptation of the DPP lifestyle intervention. A total of 223 participants were enrolled from a worksite and three community centers. Paper 1 describes the ability of non-invasive screening measures to identify participants with prediabetes and/or the metabolic syndrome. Paper 2 evaluates the impact of a pre-intervention delay and weight change during the lag time on participant success at 6 and 12 months. Paper 3 describes the association of participants’ willingness to engage in health lifestyle practices and other factors to achieving weight loss and physical activity goals.
RESULTS: Paper 1 demonstrated a lack of acceptable discrimination among all non-invasive methods in the identification of prediabetes and/or the metabolic syndrome. In paper 2, assignment to the delayed-control group and weight change during the pre-intervention delay did not affect weight loss, self-monitoring or attendance at 6 and 12 months. The results of paper 3 demonstrated the importance of willingness to engage in healthy lifestyle practices and self-monitoring and attendance for weight loss and physical activity (PA) goal achievement.
PUBLIC HEALTH SIGNIFICANCE: The results of this dissertation provide information regarding important issues in the implementation of community diabetes prevention programs. This knowledge will be extremely beneficial for organizations planning to implement a behavioral weight loss intervention in the community and will facilitate program delivery on a widespread basis
