    Choroidal osteoma with CNVM – Successful treatment with intravitreal Bevacizumab

    AbstractTwenty-seven years old healthy woman presented with complaints of sudden painless blurred vision in right eye for 1week. On examination, visual acuity was 20/30 in the right eye and 20/20 in left eye. Fundus examination OS was normal; OD demonstrated a flat, opaque, yellowish parapapillary choroidal lesion with grayish membrane associated with minimal subretinal fluid suggestive of a CNVM in the center. B-scan ultrasonography revealed findings consistent with a choroidal osteoma. Fundus fluorescein angiography of the right eye revealed a relatively well-defined area of hyperfluorescence that increased in size and intensity in the later phases suggestive of active extrafoveal CNVM. Optical coherence tomography confirmed the extrafoveal CNVM with subfoveal fluid. She was treated with intravitreal Bevacizumab OD. At the 2weeks visit, vision OD improved to 20/20. The FFA and OCT revealed a resolved CNVM. Intravitreal Bevacizumab may be an effective alternative in the management of CNVM secondary to choroidal osteoma

    Hyperhomocysteinemia: a risk factor in unexplained infertility

    Background: To study the role of hyperhomocysteinemia in unexplained infertility and the impact of its correction with vitamin and mineral supplementation.Methods: Total of 60 patients were included with 30 patients in case and 30 patients in control groups. Cases included patients with history of inability to conceive with frequent regular unprotected intercourse for at least 1 year. Controls included age matched parous females with at least one live birth and no history of abortions. Among the patients of unexplained infertility with hyperhomocysteinemia, homocysteine lowering agents were given and outcome studied in the form of lowering of homocysteine levels and number of conceptions.Results: The mean age was 28.1 years in study and 29.5 years in the control group .Mean level of serum homocysteine was significantly higher in study group than normal fertile women i.e.20.5µmol/l and 10.9 µmol/l respectively. Among the patients of unexplained infertility, 22(73.3%) were found to have range above the normal healthy levels. In these patients homocysteine lowering agents were given for 6 weeks and lowering of mean homocysteine levels was observed which was 10.4 µmol/l.  Six (27.3%) patients conceived spontaneously during the follow up period.Conclusions: Serum homocysteine levels are inversely correlated with infertility. Homocysteine lowering agents have a favourable impact on the outcome of infertility and their use is suggested in cases of unexplained infertility associated with hyperhomocysteinemia.

    Studies on Production and Chemical Property of Singlet Oxygen and Superoxide Radical by Dyestuffs

    There are several low lying singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radical (O-2) which are important in photochemical oxidation. In our present analysis we are studying chemical property of singlet oxygen (1O2) and super oxide radical (O-2) and some dyestuffs species to produce reactive oxygen such as singlet oxygen 1O2 and superoxide radicals. Irradiation with sun light in vitro the dyestuff like benzanthrone, metanil yellow and p-aminodiphenylamine were found to produce reactive oxygen species such as singlet oxygen (1O2) and/or superoxide radicals (O-2) .The dose response relationship between singlet 1O2 production when sunlight expose of those dyestuffs (0-25 min), and (0-12 min) for super oxide (O-2) production were studied. However benzanthrone produces detectable amount of 1O2, Although metanil yellow and p-aminodiphenylamine (p-ADPA) did not produce detectable amounts of 1O2 under similar conditions. The above dye stuffs are routinely used in textiles, cosmetics, detergents, leather industries as well as food additives and role of these activated oxygen species in the development of skin diseases

    Abstract-Oxidative stress and Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation-induced skin damage, is involved in numerous diseases. Eclipta alba which belongs to Asteraceae family is used traditionally in Ayurvedic system of medicine in India for the treatment of liver diseases. Our study shows that water extract of E. alba has a potent effect in scavenging 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), chelating ferrous ion, and superoxide radicals, exhibiting IC 50 values of 0.21 mg/mL, 1.20 mg/mL, and .49 mg/mL, respectively. Identification and quantification of the wedelolactone, one of the active constituents of the Eclipta alba plant extract, was carried out by HPLC analysis. The result of the present study indicates that the Eclipta alba extract shows a high amount of ascorbic acid, tannins, flavonoids, phenolics, contents. The hydroalcoholic extract of Eclipta alba effectively scavenged free radicals at all different concentrations and showed potent antioxidant potency.
