Reduced tibial strain-shielding with extraosseous total knee arthroplasty revision system
Background Revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA) has poorer results than primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and the prostheses are invasive and cause strain-shielding of the bones near the knee. This paper describes an RTKA system with extracortical fixation. It was hypothesised that this would reduce strain-shielding compared with intramedullary fixation. Methods Twelve replica tibiae were prepared for full-field optical surface strain analysis. They were either left intact, implanted with RTKA components with cemented intramedullary fixation stems, or implanted with a novel design with a tibial tray subframe supported by two extracortical fixation plates and screw fixation. They were loaded to simulate peak walking and stair climbing loads and the surface strains were measured using digital image correlation. The measurements were validated with strain gauge rosettes. Results Compared to the intact bone model, extracortical fixation reduced surface strain-shielding by half versus intramedullary fixation. For all load cases and bone regions examined, the extracortical implant shielded 8–27% of bone strain, whereas the intramedullary component shielded 37–56%. Conclusions The new fixation design, which offers less bone destruction than conventional RTKA, also reduced strain-shielding. Clinically, this design may allow greater rebuilding of bone loss, and should increase long-term fixation
From attosecond to zeptosecond coherent control of free-electron wave functions using semi-infinite light fields
Light-electron interaction in empty space is the seminal ingredient for
free-electron lasers and also for controlling electron beams to dynamically
investigate materials and molecules. Pushing the coherent control of free
electrons by light to unexplored timescales, below the attosecond, would enable
unprecedented applications in light-assisted electron quantum circuits and
diagnostics at extremely small timescales, such as those governing
intramolecular electronic motion and nuclear phenomena. We experimentally
demonstrate attosecond coherent manipulation of the electron wave function in a
transmission electron microscope, and show that it can be pushed down to the
zeptosecond regime with existing technology. We make a relativistic pulsed
electron beam interact in free space with an appropriately synthesized
semi-infinite light field generated by two femtosecond laser pulses reflected
at the surface of a mirror and delayed by fractions of the optical cycle. The
amplitude and phase of the resulting coherent oscillations of the electron
states in energymomentum space are mapped via momentum-resolved ultrafast
electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The experimental results are in full
agreement with our theoretical framework for light-electron interaction, which
predicts access to the zeptosecond timescale by combining semi-infinite X-ray
fields with free electrons.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
Compositional and Morphological Characterization of ‘Sorrento’ and ‘Chandler’ Walnuts
In Italy, most of the cultivated walnuts belong to the Sorrento ecotype, and they are
considered commercially valuable due to their specific organoleptic characteristics. The aim of this
study is to evaluate and compare the morphological and compositional characteristics of walnuts
sampled from ‘Sorrento’ trees cultivated in different locations in Campania and trees of both the
‘Chandler’ and ‘Sorrento’ varieties derived from the same location. The results demonstrated that
‘Sorrento’ and ‘Chandler’ walnuts have different biometric characteristics and a different fat content,
with the highest fat content being found in the ‘Sorrento’ variety. Regarding the fatty acid (FA)
composition, the content of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids (MUFAs and SFAs) was
highest in the ‘Sorrento’ variety (from 13 to 15% for MUFAs and from 11 to 13% for SFAs), while
the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) content was highest in the ‘Chandler’ variety (77%). The
total phenolics content (TPC) was highest in the ‘Sorrento’ variety (from 910 to 1230 mg GAE/100 g),
while no difference in γ-tocopherol content was found. Furthermore, the influence of walnut area
cultivation was shown for fat content, FA composition and TPC. Therefore, both walnut varieties
demonstrated good nutritional properties considering the PUFAs and γ-tocopherol conten
Laser-Induced Skyrmion Writing and Erasing in an Ultrafast Cryo-Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy
We demonstrate that light-induced heat pulses of different duration and
energy can write skyrmions in a broad range of temperatures and magnetic field
in FeGe. Using a combination of camera-rate and pump-probe cryo-Lorentz
Transmission Electron Microscopy, we directly resolve the spatio-temporal
evolution of the magnetization ensuing optical excitation. The skyrmion lattice
was found to maintain its structural properties during the laser-induced
demagnetization, and its recovery to the initial state happened in the
sub-{\mu}s to {\mu}s range, depending on the cooling rate of the system

The Missing Piece: The Structure of the Ti3C2TxMXene and Its Behavior as Negative Electrode in Sodium Ion Batteries
The most common MXene composition Ti3C2Tx (T = F, O) shows outstanding stability as anode for sodium ion batteries (100% of capacity retention after 530 cycles with charge efficiency >99.7%). However, the reversibility of the intercalation/deintercalation process is strongly affected by the synthesis parameters determining, in turn, significant differences in the material structure. This study proposes a new approach to identify the crystal features influencing the performances, using a structural model built with a multitechnique approach that allows exploring the short-range order of the lamella. The model is then used to determine the long-range order by inserting defective elements into the structure. With this strategy it is possible to fit the MXene diffraction patterns, obtain the structural parameters including the stoichiometric composition of the terminations (neutron data), and quantify the structural disorder which can be used to discriminate the phases with the best electrochemical properties
