    The perceptions of consumers aged 18-30 of “lesbian” appeals in advertising

    In an over-saturated market, advertisements have become more risqué as companies viefor consumer attention and lesbian content in advertising seems to be on the increasein mainstream media. This article attempts to discover whether lesbian content inadvertising elicits positive or negative consumer attitudes towards the advertisementand the brand, and to link these attitudes with the intention to purchase the product.By doing so, marketers will be able to ascertain whether this type of advertising appealis effective or whether it offends consumers and therefore decreases product sales.The study was quantitative in nature and used descriptive research in a field setting. Itwas found that there is a significant correlation between tolerance of homosexuality andacceptance of lesbian content in advertising. In addition, these advertisements attractedattention and interest and were not perceived as particularly immoral, exploitive oroffensive by most of the sample population. It has no factual basis, and although some fake news stories may include verifiable facts, it is presented in a way to deliberately push an untrue narrative. With the advent of social media, the spreading of fake news has increased, and popular media, such as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram and others, have become some of the primary vehicles for spreading misinformation. The effect of fake news is severe and wide-ranging, as it impacts not only individuals, but also organisations and communities. One way to combat the spreading of misinformation and its associated negative consequences is to increase fake news awareness levels. It is particularly important to evaluate fake news awareness levels of young adults and students, as they are perceived as the most intensive social media users. In this study, a fake news awareness survey instrument is developed to evaluate the fake news awareness levels of a selected group of university students. The objective of the survey instrument is to determine whether students are able to recognise fake news. In addition, the survey also provides information on various other characteristics of fake news, such as the spreading of fake news, guidelines on how to educate people about fake news, general behaviour, and news preferences of students. The study is conducted using the design science research method, and the results show that it is possible to determine students' fake news awareness levels. The study resulted in several findings which led to formulating a set of recommendations that may be implemented to increase fake news awareness levels.Master

    Obeying God? Obeying Paul? Bridging the socio-cultural context in the interpretation of Biblical imperatives

    When do we encounter God in the Pauline imperatives, or when is it Paul, the man of his times, that we are dealing with? This article develops a model to help us determine the reach of the imperatives into our socio-cultural context today. The imperatives are shown to be more than ad hoc injunctions but, rather, legitimate expressions of the new symbolic world in which both Paul and believers participate by faith. The imperatives carry an illocutionary force which relies on such a shared symbolic world. By analysing Paul�s imperatives in terms of this symbolic world it is clear that he, at times, simply accepted the dominant cultural interpretation of reality of his day at the cost of limiting the expression of his symbolic world. At other times he modified the dominant cultural interpretation by calling believers to act contra-culturally in the light of the gospel�s new interpretation of reality. There are also instances where Paul directly rejects certain aspects of the culture of the day in the light of the symbolic world. Paul�s flexibility to develop a variety of responses towards the dominant culture of his day in the light of the indicatives of the gospel message provides an important key to developing a model to determine �if?�, �when?� and �how?�, to apply the imperatives into our context today

    Filmmaker's relief : a comparative study

    The South African film industry is the second oldest film industry in the world. Sadly though, the industry did not develop in the previous century to the same extent film industries developed in specifically North America and Europe. Film tax relief is an incentive incorporated in tax legislations worldwide and is used as a catalyst for economic growth in film industries. South Africa has had specific tax legislation in this regard for decades and it is currently regulated in terms of Section 24F of the Income Tax Act. Two further incentives, the „Foreign Investment Grant‟ and the „Strategic Industrial Projects Grant‟ are also available from the Department of Trade and Industry. Legislation is constantly reviewed and revised to achieve the objectives they intend to have.     Symbolising salvation: A semiotic analysis of the church as a transformative communication system in the world

    This article considers the church from a semiotic and systems-theory perspective as a revelatory symbol of the salvation-historical acts of God for and in the world. The church,as a communicative field of encounter between God and humans as well as between humans amongst each other, creates space for symbols that may be utilised to realise further encounters. At the same time, the church also operates as a communicative symbol in her own right which may be �read� and �interpreted� by others. The church as an operational system is shown to generate revelatory symbols to the world through her separation from,engagement with and being directed towards the world. The church is shown to exist and operate in dynamic conflict with the world as well as with the Kingdom of God through the overcoming presence of the Holy Spirit within her. An operational communicative system model of the church indicates that the church is an alternating rather than alternative community, which ensures ideological relevance as well as theological difference between the church and the world.Interdisciplinary and/or intradisciplinary implications: This article utilises insights from the fields of semiotics and systems theory within a practical-theological ecclesiology, there by providing new perspectives on the church. The article also interacts with aspects of systematic theological ecclesiology.</p

    MEd (Comparative Education), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014The current mainstream classroom presents several challenges for teachers and principals. Leaner diversity is seen as one of these challenges that teachers face. The Education White Paper 6 (South-Africa, 1996) recognizes all learner diversities, yet gifted-education is given minimal attention. The purpose of this qualitative research is to create a clear picture about the perspectives of high-school teachers, principals and parents of academically-gifted learners. This study seeks to identify the participants’ views about the education of academically-gifted learners and identify possibly gaps in ways of how academically-gifted learners can be supported productively. The research found that there is currently a lack of adequate educational support to academically-gifted learners. Research shows that there is a gap between official educational policies and the classroom situation. Participants in the study admit that academically-gifted learners are not effectively included in the mainstream classroom. Participants believe that the lack of a national definition of academic-giftedness, the deficit to appropriate training for teachers and the views of inclusive education puts strain on the education of these learners. Secondary school teachers and principals believe that the successful implementation of a policy an appropriate education of academically-gifted learners can only be accomplished if there is cooperation between all interested parties. Participants believe that both the parent and the teachers of academically-gifted learners should work together to form a support network for these learners. The findings of the research confirm the need for appropriate productive education and training to academically-gifted learners, so that all stakeholders can work together to help those learners develop.Master
