12,15-Dichloro[3.0]orthometa- cyclophane: A Highly Strained Biphenylophane.

    No full text
The title compound, 3, in which two methylene groups of the parent compound 4 have been replaced by an ortho-substituted benzene ring, has been synthesized. It exists exclusively in the endo-conformation, in contrast to 4 for which the exo-conformation is preferred. High-level density functional calculations are presented for both compounds. They show that the endo- conformation of 3 is favored over the exo-conformation by 3.3 kcal mo

Trapping of the highly strained [5](2,4)quinolinophane system

    No full text
The highly strained [5](2,4)quinolinophane system can be generated as an intermediate (2b), which is extremely susceptible towards the attack of both nucleophilic and electrophilic species. Addition of water at the carbon bridgehead C2 occurs rapidly and is followed by rearrangements to give a strain free product 10. An unusual carbene addition at the N1]C2 bond of 2b is proposed to explain the formation of the strained ‘anti-Bredt’ type olefin 11
