Resource Wealth, Innovation and Growth in the Global Economy
We analyze the relative growth performance of open economies in a two-country model where different endowments of labor and a natural resource generate asymmetric trade. A resource-rich economy trades resource-based intermediates for final manufacturing goods produced by a resource-poor economy. Productivity growth in both countries is driven by endogenous innovations. The effects of a sudden increase in the resource endowment depend crucially on the elasticity of substitution between resources and labor in interme- diates' production. Under substitution (complementarity), the resource boom generates higher (lower) resource income, lower (higher) employment in the resource-intensive sector, higher (lower) knowledge creation and faster (slower) growth in the resource-rich economy. The resource-poor economy adjusts to the shock by raising (reducing) the relative wage, and experiences a positive (negative) growth effect that is exclusively due to trade.Endogenous Growth, Endogenous Technological Change, Natural Resources, International Trade.
Growth on a Finite Planet: Resources, Technology and Population in the Long Run
We study the interactions between technological change, resource scarcity and population dynamics in a Schumpeterian model with endogenous fertility. There exists a pseudo- Malthusian equilibrium in which population is constant and income grows exponentially: the equilibrium population level is determined by resource scarcity but is independent of technology. The stability properties are driven by (i) the income reaction to increased resource scarcity and (ii) the fertility response to income dynamics. If labor and resources are substitutes in production, income and fertility dynamics are self-balancing and the pseudo-Malthusian equilibrium is the global attractor of the system. If labor and resources are complements, income and fertility dynamics are self-reinforcing and drive the economy towards either demographic explosion or human extinction. Introducing a minimum resource requirement, we obtain a second steady state implying constant population even under complementarity. The standard result of exponential population growth appears as a rather special case of our model.Endogenous Innovation, Resource Scarcity, Population Growth, Fertility Choices
Simulation and experimental evaluation of a flexible time triggered ethernet architecture applied in satellite nano/micro launchers
The success of small satellites has led to the study of new technologies for the realization of Nano and Micro Launch Vehicle (NMLV) in order to make competitive launch costs. The paper has the objective to define and experimentally investigate the performance of a communication system for NMLV interconnecting the End Systems as On-Board Computer (OBC), telemetry apparatus, Navigation Unit...we propose a low cost Ethernet-based solution able to provide the devices with high interconnection bandwidth. To guarantee hard delays to the Guide, Navigation and Control applications we propose some architectural changes of the traditional Ethernet network with the introduction of a layer implemented in the End Systems and allow for the lack of any contention on the network links. We show how the proposed solution has comparable performance to the one of TTEthernet standard that is a very expensive solution. An experimental test-bed equipped with Ethernet switches and Hercules boards by Texas Instruments is also provided to prove the feasibility of the proposed solution
Mechanical behaviour with temperatures of aluminum matrix composites with CNTs
Aluminum is a very useful structural metal employed in different industrial sectors, in particular it is used in
large quantities in automotive, aeronautic and nautical industries. The main reasons of its wide use are: a very
good oxidation resistance, excellent ductility, low melting temperature (660 °C) and low density (2.71 g/cm3).
However, in order to reduce the emissions and fuel consumption is necessary to reduce the overall weight of
vehicles by increasing mechanical properties of the structural material. The improvement of mechanical
properties is normally achieved through use of reinforcement in materials, used like matrix, in order to improve
some specific characteristics.
In this work composites of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in aluminum were made. The most difficulties
in the preparation of this type of composite are represented by the low wettability between metallic matrix and
fillers and the possibility of the oxidation of metal during melting with consequent decreasing of mechanical
proprieties. The composite was obtained by three consecutive step: the first one is the functionalization of
fillers surface to improve the fillers dispersion, the second one is the dispersion of fillers in the matrix by
powder mixing and the third one is the melting and casting of the mix prepared.
In particular, fillers used are multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with functionalized surface by
treatment with a solfonitric solution. Melting and casting are carried out with the aid of an induction furnace
with a controlled atmosphere system and centrifugal casting. Argon is the inert gas used to prevent the
oxidation of aluminium during fusion. Young’s modulus was evaluated at different temperature and correlated
with the different CNTs percentage. The dispersion rate of fillers and the microstructure of the sample were
evaluated by FESEM micrograph
An Exact Approach to Early/Tardy Scheduling with Release Dates
In this paper we consider the single machine earliness/tardiness scheduling problem with di?erent release dates and no unforced idle time. The problem is decomposed into a weighted earliness subproblem and a weighted tardiness subproblem. Lower bounding procedures are proposed for each of these subproblems, and the lower bound for the original problem is then simply the sum of the lower bounds for the two subproblems. The lower bounds and several versions of a branch-and-bound algorithm are then tested on a set of randomly generated problems, and instances with up to 30 jobs are solved to optimality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first exact approach for the early/tardy scheduling problem with release dates and no unforced idle time.scheduling, early/tardy, release dates, lower bounds, branch-and-bound
