Nano-structured magnetic metamaterial with enhanced nonlinear properties
Nano-structuring can significantly modify the properties of materials. We demonstrate that size-dependent modification of the spin-wave spectra in magnetic nano-particles can affect not only linear, but also nonlinear magnetic response. The discretization of the spectrum removes the frequency degeneracy between the main excitation mode of a nano-particle and the higher spin-wave modes, having the lowest magnetic damping, and reduces the strength of multi-magnon relaxation processes. This reduction of magnon-magnon relaxation for the main excitation mode leads to a dramatic increase of its lifetime and amplitude, resulting in the intensification of all the nonlinear processes involving this mode. We demonstrate this experimentally on a two-dimensional array of permalloy nano-dots for the example of parametric generation of a sub-harmonic of an external microwave signal. The characteristic lifetime of this sub-harmonic is increased by two orders of magnitude compared to the case of a continuous magnetic film, where magnon-magnon relaxation limits the lifetime
Energy- and flux-budget turbulence closure model for stably stratified flows. Part II: the role of internal gravity waves
We advance our prior energy- and flux-budget turbulence closure model
(Zilitinkevich et al., 2007, 2008) for the stably stratified atmospheric flows
and extend it accounting for additional vertical flux of momentum and
additional productions of turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent potential energy
(TPE) and turbulent flux of potential temperature due to large-scale internal
gravity waves (IGW). Main effects of IGW are following: the maximal value of
the flux Richardson number (universal constant 0.2-0.25 in the no-IGW regime)
becomes strongly variable. In the vertically homogeneous stratification, it
increases with increasing wave energy and can even exceed 1. In the
heterogeneous stratification, when IGW propagate towards stronger
stratification, the maximal flux Richardson number decreases with increasing
wave energy, reaches zero and then becomes negative. In other words, the
vertical flux of potential temperature becomes counter-gradient. IGW also
reduce anisotropy of turbulence and increase the share of TPE in the turbulent
total energy. Depending on the direction (downward or upward), IGW either
strengthen or weaken the total vertical flux of momentum. Predictions from the
proposed model are consistent with available data from atmospheric and
laboratory experiments, direct numerical simulations and large-eddy
simulations.Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, revised versio
Mechanics and thermodynamics of a new minimal model of the atmosphere
The understanding of the fundamental properties of the climate system has long benefitted from the use of simple numerical models able to parsimoniously represent the essential ingredients of its processes. Here, we introduce a new model for the atmosphere that is constructed by supplementing the now-classic Lorenz ’96 one-dimensional lattice model with temperature-like variables. The model features an energy cycle that allows for energy to be converted between the kinetic form and the potential form and for introducing a notion of efficiency. The model’s evolution is controlled by two contributions—a quasi-symplectic and a gradient one, which resemble (yet not conforming to) a metriplectic structure. After investigating the linear stability of the symmetric fixed point, we perform a systematic parametric investigation that allows us to define regions in the parameters space where at steady-state stationary, quasi-periodic, and chaotic motions are realised, and study how the terms responsible for defining the energy budget of the system depend on the external forcing injecting energy in the kinetic and in the potential energy reservoirs. Finally, we find preliminary evidence that the model features extensive chaos. We also introduce a more complex version of the model that is able to accommodate for multiscale dynamics and that features an energy cycle that more closely mimics the one of the Earth’s atmosphere
