    Minimal symmetric Darlington synthesis

    We consider the symmetric Darlington synthesis of a p x p rational symmetric Schur function S with the constraint that the extension is of size 2p x 2p. Under the assumption that S is strictly contractive in at least one point of the imaginary axis, we determine the minimal McMillan degree of the extension. In particular, we show that it is generically given by the number of zeros of odd multiplicity of I-SS*. A constructive characterization of all such extensions is provided in terms of a symmetric realization of S and of the outer spectral factor of I-SS*. The authors's motivation for the problem stems from Surface Acoustic Wave filters where physical constraints on the electro-acoustic scattering matrix naturally raise this mathematical issue

    The role of resuscitation promoting factors in pathogenesis and reactivation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis during intra-peritoneal infection in mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Mycobacterium tuberculosis </it>can enter into a dormant state which has resulted in one third of the world's population being infected with latent tuberculosis making the study of latency and reactivation of utmost importance. <it>M. tuberculosis </it>encodes five resuscitation promoting factors (Rpfs) that bear strong similarity to a lysozyme-like enzyme previously implicated in reactivation of dormant bacteria <it>in vitro</it>.</p> <p>We have developed an intraperitoneal infection model in mice, with immune modulation, that models chronic infection with similar properties in mouse lungs as those observed in the murine aerosol infection model. We have assessed the behavior of mutants that lack two or three <it>rpf </it>genes in different combinations in our intraperitoneal model.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>C57Bl/6 mice were intraperitonealy infected with H37Rv wild type <it>M. tuberculosis </it>or mutant strains that lacked two or three <it>rpf </it>genes in different combinations. After 90 days of infection aminoguanidine (AG) or anti-TNFα antibodies were administrated. Organ bacillary loads were determined at various intervals post infection by plating serial dilutions of organ homogenates and enumerating bacteria.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that the <it>rpf </it>triple and double mutants tested were attenuated in their ability to disseminate to mouse lungs after intraperitoneal administration and were defective in their ability to re-grow after immunosuppression induced by administration of aminoguanidine and anti-TNFα antibodies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rpf proteins may have a significant physiological role for development of chronic TB infection and its reactivation <it>in vivo</it>.</p

    Orientation-selective DEER using rigid spin labels, cofactors, metals, and clusters

    The dipolar interaction between two paramagnetic centres depends upon their spin–spin distance and relative orientation. Generally most experiments are carried out under conditions where the DEER signal only reports on the spin–spin distances and, for this type of data, sophisticated analysis methods for obtaining distance distributions have been developed. Recently there have been an increasing number of studies on systems where the DEER signals depend upon both distance and spin pair orientation. These investigations have relied on the use of rigid spin labels (those with a well-defined spatial position) and/or spectrometers operating at Q-band frequencies and above capable of performing DEER experiments with high resolution and sensitivity. In this article we discuss in detail orientation-selective DEER experiments for which the modulation depth and the dipolar frequencies depend on the relative orientation of the two paramagnetic centres and the distance. Analysis of the data in the presence of distance and orientation distributions is discussed, and representative examples from the literature are given for systems containing spin labels, organic cofactors, metals, and metal clusters
