Two Simple W' Models for the Early LHC
W' gauge bosons are good candidates for early LHC discovery. We define two
reference models, one containing a W'_R and one containing a W'_L, which may
serve as ``simplified models'' for presenting experimental results of W'
searches at the LHC. We present the Tevatron bounds on each model and compute
the constraints from precision electroweak observables. We find that indirect
low-energy constraints on the W'_L are quite strong. However, for a W'_R
coupling to right-handed fermions there exists a sizeable region in parameter
space beyond the bounds from the Tevatron and low-energy precision measurements
where even 50 inverse picobarns of integrated LHC luminosity are sufficient to
discover the W'_R. The most promising final states are two leptons and two
jets, or one lepton recoiling against a ``neutrino jet''. A neutrino jet is a
collimated object consisting of a hard lepton and two jets arising from the
decay of a highly boosted massive neutrino.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. v2: references adde
TBA-like equations and Casimir effect in (non-)perturbative AdS/CFT
We consider high spin, , long twist, , planar operators (asymptotic
Bethe Ansatz) of strong SYM. Precisely, we compute the minimal
anomalous dimensions for large 't Hooft coupling to the lowest order
of the (string) scaling variable with GKP string size . At the leading order ,
we can confirm the O(6) non-linear sigma model description for this bulk term,
without boundary term . Going further, we derive,
extending the O(6) regime, the exact effect of the size finiteness. In
particular, we compute, at all loops, the first Casimir correction (in terms of the infinite size O(6) NLSM), which reveals only one
massless mode (out of five), as predictable once the O(6) description has been
extended. Consequently, upon comparing with string theory expansion, at one
loop our findings agree for large twist, while reveal for negligible twist,
already at this order, the appearance of wrapping. At two loops, as well as for
next loops and orders, we can produce predictions, which may guide future
string computations.Comment: Version 2 with: new exact expression for the Casimir energy derived
(beyond the first two loops of the previous version); UV theory formulated
and analysed extensively in the Appendix C; origin of the O(6) NLSM
scattering clarified; typos correct and references adde
Predicting live birth, preterm and low birth weight infant after in-vitro fertilisation: a prospective study of 144018 treatment cycles
Background
The extent to which baseline couple characteristics affect the probability of live birth and adverse perinatal outcomes after assisted conception is unknown.
Methods and Findings
We utilised the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority database to examine the predictors of live birth in all in vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycles undertaken in the UK between 2003 and 2007 (n = 144,018). We examined the potential clinical utility of a validated model that pre-dated the introduction of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) as compared to a novel model. For those treatment cycles that resulted in a live singleton birth (n = 24,226), we determined the associates of potential risk factors with preterm birth, low birth weight, and macrosomia. The overall rate of at least one live birth was 23.4 per 100 cycles (95% confidence interval [CI] 23.2â23.7). In multivariable models the odds of at least one live birth decreased with increasing maternal age, increasing duration of infertility, a greater number of previously unsuccessful IVF treatments, use of own oocytes, necessity for a second or third treatment cycle, or if it was not unexplained infertility. The association of own versus donor oocyte with reduced odds of live birth strengthened with increasing age of the mother. A previous IVF live birth increased the odds of future success (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.46â1.71) more than that of a previous spontaneous live birth (OR 1.19, 95% CI 0.99â1.24); p-value for difference in estimate <0.001. Use of ICSI increased the odds of live birth, and male causes of infertility were associated with reduced odds of live birth only in couples who had not received ICSI. Prediction of live birth was feasible with moderate discrimination and excellent calibration; calibration was markedly improved in the novel compared to the established model. Preterm birth and low birth weight were increased if oocyte donation was required and ICSI was not used. Risk of macrosomia increased with advancing maternal age and a history of previous live births. Infertility due to cervical problems was associated with increased odds of all three outcomesâpreterm birth, low birth weight, and macrosomia.
Conclusions
Pending external validation, our results show that couple- and treatment-specific factors can be used to provide infertile couples with an accurate assessment of whether they have low or high risk of a successful outcome following IVF
Six-Loop Anomalous Dimension of Twist-Three Operators in N=4 SYM
The result for the six-loop anomalous dimension of twist-three operators in
the planar N=4 SYM theory is presented. The calculations were performed along
the paper arXiv:0912.1624. This result provides a new data for testing the
proposed spectral equations for planar AdS/CFT correspondence.Comment: 19 pages, typos corrected, details adde
Z' signals in polarised top-antitop final states
We study the sensitivity of top-antitop samples produced at all energy stages
of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to the nature of an underlying Z' boson, in
presence of full tree level standard model (SM) background effects and relative
interferences. We concentrate on differential mass spectra as well as both
spatial and spin asymmetries thereby demonstrating that exploiting combinations
of these observables will enable one to distinguish between sequential Z's and
those pertaining to Left-Right symmetric models as well as E6 inspired ones,
assuming realistic final state reconstruction efficiencies and error estimates.Comment: 21 pages, 6 colour figures, 10 table
Neurochemical Changes in the Mouse Hippocampus Underlying the Antidepressant Effect of Genetic Deletion of P2X7 Receptors.
Recent investigations have revealed that the genetic deletion of P2X7 receptors (P2rx7) results in an antidepressant phenotype in mice. However, the link between the deficiency of P2rx7 and changes in behavior has not yet been explored. In the present study, we studied the effect of genetic deletion of P2rx7 on neurochemical changes in the hippocampus that might underlie the antidepressant phenotype. P2X7 receptor deficient mice (P2rx7-/-) displayed decreased immobility in the tail suspension test (TST) and an attenuated anhedonia response in the sucrose preference test (SPT) following bacterial endotoxin (LPS) challenge. The attenuated anhedonia was reproduced through systemic treatments with P2rx7 antagonists. The activation of P2rx7 resulted in the concentration-dependent release of [3H]glutamate in P2rx7+/+ but not P2rx7-/- mice, and the NR2B subunit mRNA and protein was upregulated in the hippocampus of P2rx7-/- mice. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression was higher in saline but not LPS-treated P2rx7-/- mice; the P2rx7 antagonist Brilliant blue G elevated and the P2rx7 agonist benzoylbenzoyl ATP (BzATP) reduced BDNF level. This effect was dependent on the activation of NMDA and non-NMDA receptors but not on Group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR1,5). An increased 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation was also observed in the dentate gyrus derived from P2rx7-/- mice. Basal level of 5-HT was increased, whereas the 5HIAA/5-HT ratio was lower in the hippocampus of P2rx7-/- mice, which accompanied the increased uptake of [3H]5-HT and an elevated number of [3H]citalopram binding sites. The LPS-induced elevation of 5-HT level was absent in P2rx7-/- mice. In conclusion there are several potential mechanisms for the antidepressant phenotype of P2rx7-/- mice, such as the absence of P2rx7-mediated glutamate release, elevated basal BDNF production, enhanced neurogenesis and increased 5-HT bioavailability in the hippocampus

The objective of the present study was to identify the incidence of accidents, devices involved, contributing factors and post-accident behaviors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 127 healthcare workers from the operating center. Of the total number of accidents reported, 23.6% (30/127) involved piercing-cutting materials, including needles (73.3%), scalpels (6.7%) and electrocautery (6.7%). The factors contributing to the accident were: lack of attention (36.7%), poor working conditions (20.0%), neglect (13.3%), rushing (10%) and accident/chance (6.7%). Only 15.4% of the accidents were recorded. Underreporting was due to: irrelevance of the accident, unaware of the protocol of routine, negligence and work overload. Results show the importance of implementing strategies for adopting/reviewing post-accident protocols aiming at reducing accidents and their underreporting
Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS
has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions
at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection
criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined.
For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a
muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the
whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4,
while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The
efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than
90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall
momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The
transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity
for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be
better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions
of all quantities are well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
