Search for direct production of charginos, neutralinos and sleptons in final states with two leptons and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at âs = 8TeV with the ATLAS detector
Searches for the electroweak production of charginos, neutralinos and sleptons in final states characterized by the presence of two leptons (electrons and muons) and missing transverse momentum are performed using 20.3 fbâ1 of proton-proton collision data at sâ = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. Limits are set on the masses of the lightest chargino, next-to-lightest neutralino and sleptons for different lightest-neutralino mass hypotheses in simplified models. Results are also interpreted in various scenarios of the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
Prospects for the Search for a Standard Model Higgs Boson in ATLAS using Vector Boson Fusion
The potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson in the mass
range m_H < 2 m_Z in the vector boson fusion mode has been studied for the
ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The characteristic signatures of additional jets
in the forward regions of the detector and of low jet activity in the central
region allow for an efficient background rejection. Analyses for the H -> WW
and H -> tau tau decay modes have been performed using a realistic simulation
of the expected detector performance. The results obtained demonstrate the
large discovery potential in the H -> WW decay channel and the sensitivity to
Higgs boson decays into tau-pairs in the low-mass region around 120 GeV.Comment: 20 pages, 13 ps figures, uses EPJ style fil
Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at âs = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fbâ1 of pp collision data at sâ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26â0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio Ď(W + +cÂŻÂŻ)/Ď(W â + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the sâsÂŻÂŻÂŻ quark asymmetry
Impact of remnant vital tissue after locoregional treatment and liver transplant in hepatocellular cancer patients. A multicentre cohort study
The role of pathological findings after locoregional treatments as predictors of hepatocellular cancer recurrence after liver transplantation has been poorly addressed. The aim of the study was to identify the role of remnant vital tissue (RVT) of the target lesion in predicting hepatocellular cancer recurrence. Two hundred and seventy-six patients firstly undergoing locoregional treatment and then transplanted between January 2010 and December 2015 in four European Transplant Centres (i.e. Rome Tor Vergata, Birmingham, Brussels and Ancona) were enrolled in the study to investigate the role of pathological response at upfront locoregional treatment. At multivariable Cox regression analysis, RVT âĽ2 cm was a strong independent risk factor for post-LT recurrence (HR = 5.6; P < 0.0001). Five-year disease-free survival rates were 60.8%, 80.9% and 95.0% in patients presenting a RVT âĽ2 cm vs. 0.1-1.9 vs. no RVT, respectively. When only Milan Criteria-IN patients were analysed, similar results were reported, with 5-year disease-free survival rates of 58.1%, 79.0% and 94.0% in patients presenting a RVT âĽ2 cm vs. 0.1-1.9 vs. no RVT, respectively. RVT is an important determinant of tumour recurrence after liver transplantation performed for hepatocellular cancer. Its discriminative power looks to be evident also in a Milan-IN setting, suggesting to more liberally use locoregional treatments also in these patients
A mobile data acquisition system
A mobile data aquisition (MobiDAQ) was developed for the ATLAS central hadronic
calorimeter (TileCal). MobiDAQ has been designed in order to test the functionalities of the TileCal
front-end electronics and to acquire calibration data before the final back-end electronics were built
and tested. MobiDAQ was also used to record the first cosmic ray events acquired by an ATLAS
subdetector in the underground experimental area
Immune-checkpoint inhibitors from cancer to COVIDâ19: A promising avenue for the treatment of patients with COVIDâ19
The severe acute respiratory syndrome associated coronavirusâ2 (SARSâCoVâ2) poses a threat to human life worldwide. Since early March, 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVIDâ19), characterized by an acute and often severe form of pneumonia, has been declared a pandemic. This has led to a boom in biomedical research studies at all stages of the pipeline, from the in vitro to the clinical phase. In line with this global effort, known drugs, currently used for the treatment of other pathologies, including antivirals, immunomodulating compounds and antibodies, are currently used offâlabel for the treatment of COVIDâ19, in association with the supportive standard care. Yet, no effective treatments have been identified. A new hope stems from medical oncology and relies on the use of immuneâcheckpoint inhibitors (ICIs). In particular, amongst the ICIs, antibodies able to block the programmed deathâ1 (PDâ1)/PD ligand-1 (PDâL1) pathway have revealed a hidden potential. In fact, patients with severe and critical COVIDâ19, even prior to the appearance of acute respiratory distress syndrome, exhibit lymphocytopenia and suffer from Tâcell exhaustion, which may lead to viral sepsis and an increased mortality rate. It has been observed that cancer patients, who usually are immunocompromised, may restore their antiâtumoral immune response when treated with ICIs. Moreover, viral-infected mice and humans, exhibit a Tâcell exhaustion, which is also observed following SARSâCoVâ2 infection. Importantly, when treated with antiâPDâ1 and antiâPDâL1 antibodies, they restore their Tâcell competence and efficiently counteract the viral infection. Based on these observations, four clinical trials are currently open, to examine the efficacy of antiâPDâ1 antibody administration to both cancer and nonâcancer individuals affected by COVIDâ19. The results may prove the hypothesis that restoring exhausted Tâcells may be a winning strategy to beat SARSâCoVâ2 infection
The Evolution of FTK, a Real-Time Tracker for Hadron Collider Experiments
We describe the architecture evolution of the highly-parallel dedicated
processor FTK, which is driven by the simulation of LHC events at high
luminosity (1034 cm-2 s-1). FTK is able to provide precise on-line track
reconstruction for future hadronic collider experiments. The processor,
organized in a two-tiered pipelined architecture, execute very fast algorithms
based on the use of a large bank of pre-stored patterns of trajectory points
(first tier) in combination with full resolution track fitting to refine
pattern recognition and to determine off-line quality track parameters. We
describe here how the high luminosity simulation results have produced a new
organization of the hardware inside the FTK processor core.Comment: 11th ICATPP conferenc
Postoperative trends and prognostic values of inflammatory and nutritional biomarkers after liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma
11noPreoperative inflammatory biomarkers such as the Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) and the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) strongly predict the outcome in surgically treated patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), while nutritional biomarkers such as the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) show an analogue prognostic value in hepatic resection (HR) but not in liver transplant (LT) cases. Data on the impact of LT on the inflammatory and nutritional/metabolic function are heterogeneous. Therefore, we investigated the post-LT trend of these biomarkers up to postoperative month (POM) 12 in 324 HCC patients treated with LT. Inflammatory biomarkers peaked in the early post-LT period but at POM 3 leveled off at values similar (NLR) or higher (PLR) than pre-LT ones. CONUT and PNI worsened in the early post-LT period, but at POM 3 they stabilized at significantly better values than pre-LT. In LT recipients with an overall survival >1 year and no evidence of early HCC recurrence, 1 year post-LT NLR and PNI independently predicted patient overall survival, while 1 year post-LT PLR independently predicted late tumor recurrence. In conclusion, at 1 year post-LT, the nutritional status of liver-transplanted HCC patients significantly improved while their inflammatory state tended to persist.
