Measurements and Analysis of Longitudinal HOM Driven Coupled Bunch Modes in PEP-II Rings
The growth rates of the longitudinal higher-order impedance-driven beam modes have greatly increased since the initial PEP-II design and commissioning. This increase is attributed to the addition of 6 1.2MW RF stations with 8 accelerating cavities in the HER and 2 1.2MW RF stations with 4 accelerating cavities in the LER, which allowed operations at twice the design current and almost four times the luminosity. As a result, the damping requirements for the longitudinal feedback have greatly increased since the design, and the feedback filters and control schemes have evolved during PEP-II operations. In this paper, growth and damping rate data for the higher-order mode (HOM) driven coupled-bunch modes are presented from various PEP-II runs and are compared with historical estimates during commissioning. The effect of noise in the feedback processing channel is also studied. Both the stability and performance limits of the system are analyzed

Modeling and Simulation of Longitudinal Dynamics for LER-HER PEP II Rings
A time domain modeling and simulation tool for beam-cavity interactions in LER and HER rings at PEP II are presented. The motivation for this tool is to explore the stability margins and performance limits of PEP II RF systems at higher currents and upgraded RF configurations. It also serves as test bed for new control algorithms and can define the ultimate limits of the architecture. The time domain program captures the dynamical behavior of the beam-cavity interaction based on a reduced model. The ring current is represented by macro-bunches. Multiple RF station in the ring are represented via one or two macro-cavities. Each macro-cavity captures the overall behavior of all the 2 or 4 cavity RF station. Station models include nonlinear elements in the klystron and signal processing. This allows modeling the principal longitudinal impedance control loops interacting with the longitudinal beam model. Validation of simulation tool is in progress by comparing the measured growth rates for both LER and HER rings with simulation results. The simulated behavior of both machines at high currents are presented comparing different control strategies and the effect of non-linear klystrons in the growth rates
LHC Beam Diffusion Dependence on RF Noise: Models and Measurements
Radio Frequency (RF) accelerating system noise and non-idealities can have detrimental impact on the LHC performance through longitudinal motion and longitudinal emittance growth. A theoretical formalism has been developed to relate the beam and RF loop dynamics with the bunch length growth [1]. Measurements were conducted at LHC to validate the formalism, determine the performance limiting RF components, and provide the foundation for beam diffusion estimates for higher energies and intensities. Buckling Instabilities of a Confined Colloid Crystal Layer
A model predicting the structure of repulsive, spherically symmetric,
monodisperse particles confined between two walls is presented. We study the
buckling transition of a single flat layer as the double layer state develops.
Experimental realizations of this model are suspensions of stabilized colloidal
particles squeezed between glass plates. By expanding the thermodynamic
potential about a flat state of confined colloidal particles, we derive
a free energy as a functional of in-plane and out-of-plane displacements. The
wavevectors of these first buckling instabilities correspond to three different
ordered structures. Landau theory predicts that the symmetry of these phases
allows for second order phase transitions. This possibility exists even in the
presence of gravity or plate asymmetry. These transitions lead to critical
behavior and phases with the symmetry of the three-state and four-state Potts
models, the X-Y model with 6-fold anisotropy, and the Heisenberg model with

Homeostatic interferon-lambda response to bacterial microbiota stimulates preemptive antiviral defense within discrete pockets of intestinal epithelium
Interferon-lambda (IFN-λ) protects intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) from enteric viruses by inducing expression of antiviral IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). Here, we find that bacterial microbiota stimulate a homeostatic ISG signature in the intestine of specific pathogen-free mice. This homeostatic ISG expression is restricted to IECs, depends on IEC-intrinsic expression of IFN-λ receptor
IL-4(-/-) mice with lethal Mesocestoides corti infections--reduced Th2 cytokines and alternatively activated macrophages.
Protection against Mesocestoides corti, a cestode that invades vital organs, is dependent on the production of IL-4, as IL-4(-/-) mice were found to have higher parasite burdens when compared with wild-type mice. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of IL-4 in immunity to M. corti, focusing on the immunological profile and on potential mediators of pathology. IL-4(-/-) mice infected with M. corti showed 100% mortality by 32 days, whereas wild-type mice survived for approximately 1 year. Parasite burdens were significantly increased in the liver, peritoneal, and thoracic cavities of IL-4(-/-) mice, associated with impaired recruitment of inflammatory cells and a reduction in monocytes and macrophages. IL-5 production by splenocytes and expression in liver tissue was decreased in infected IL-4(-/-) mice compared with wild-type mice. In contrast, IL-4(-/-) mice produced increased amounts of IFNgamma and TNFalpha. Alternatively activated macrophages were a major feature of liver granulomas in wild-type mice evidenced by Arginase I expression, while livers from infected IL-4(-/-) mice showed impaired alternative macrophage activation without increased classical macrophage activation. Thus, lethality during M. corti infection of IL-4(-/-) mice is associated with decreased Th2 cytokines, increased Th1 cytokines and impairment of alternatively activated macrophages
Measuring Cosmic Defect Correlations in Liquid Crystals
From the theory of topological defect formation proposed for the early
universe, the so called Kibble mechanism, it follows that the density
correlation functions of defects and anti-defects in a given system should be
completely determined in terms of a single length scale , the relevant
domain size. Thus, when lengths are expressed in units of , these
distributions should show universal behavior, depending only on the symmetry of
the order parameter, and space dimensions. We have verified this prediction by
analyzing the distributions of defects/anti-defects formed in the
isotropic-nematic phase transition in a thin layer of nematic liquid crystals.
Our experimental results confirm this prediction and are in reasonable

Defects in Chiral Columnar Phases: Tilt Grain Boundaries and Iterated Moire Maps
Biomolecules are often very long with a definite chirality. DNA, xanthan and
poly-gamma-benzyl-glutamate (PBLG) can all form columnar crystalline phases.
The chirality, however, competes with the tendency for crystalline order. For
chiral polymers, there are two sorts of chirality: the first describes the
usual cholesteric-like twist of the local director around a pitch axis, while
the second favors the rotation of the local bond-orientational order and leads
to a braiding of the polymers along an average direction. In the former case
chirality can be manifested in a tilt grain boundary phase (TGB) analogous to
the Renn-Lubensky phase of smectic-A liquid crystals. In the latter case we are
led to a new "moire" state with twisted bond order. In the moire state polymers
are simultaneously entangled, crystalline, and aligned, on average, in a common
direction. In the moire state polymers are simultaneously entangled,

polymer trajectories in the plane perpendicular to their average direction are
described by iterated moire maps of remarkable complexity, reminiscent of

Contrasting Expression of Canonical Wnt Signaling Reporters TOPGAL, BATGAL and Axin2LacZ during Murine Lung Development and Repair
Canonical Wnt signaling plays multiple roles in lung organogenesis and repair by regulating early progenitor cell fates: investigation has been enhanced by canonical Wnt reporter mice, TOPGAL, BATGAL and Axin2LacZ. Although widely used, it remains unclear whether these reporters convey the same information about canonical Wnt signaling. We therefore compared beta-galactosidase expression patterns in canonical Wnt signaling of these reporter mice in whole embryo versus isolated prenatal lungs. To determine if expression varied further during repair, we analyzed comparative pulmonary expression of beta-galactosidase after naphthalene injury. Our data show important differences between reporter mice. While TOPGAL and BATGAL lines demonstrate Wnt signaling well in early lung epithelium, BATGAL expression is markedly reduced in late embryonic and adult lungs. By contrast, Axin2LacZ expression is sustained in embryonic lung mesenchyme as well as epithelium. Three days into repair after naphthalene, BATGAL expression is induced in bronchial epithelium as well as TOPGAL expression (already strongly expressed without injury). Axin2LacZ expression is increased in bronchial epithelium of injured lungs. Interestingly, both TOPGAL and Axin2LacZ are up regulated in parabronchial smooth muscle cells during repair. Therefore the optimal choice of Wnt reporter line depends on whether up- or down-regulation of canonical Wnt signal reporting in either lung epithelium or mesenchyme is being compared
