Equilibrium Chemical Engines
An equilibrium reversible cycle with a certain engine to transduce the energy
of any chemical reaction into mechanical energy is proposed. The efficiency for
chemical energy transduction is also defined so as to be compared with Carnot

Transition from anomalous to normal hysteresis in a system of coupled Brownian motors: a mean field approach
We address a recently introduced model describing a system of periodically
coupled nonlinear phase oscillators submitted to multiplicative white noises,
wherein a ratchet-like transport mechanism arises through a symmetry-breaking
noise-induced nonequilibrium phase transition. Numerical simulations of this
system reveal amazing novel features such as negative zero-bias conductance and
anomalous hysteresis, explained resorting to a strong-coupling analysis in the
thermodynamic limit. Using an explicit mean-field approximation we explore the
whole ordered phase finding a transition from anomalous to normal hysteresis
inside this phase, estimating its locus and identifying (within this scheme) a

Is the even distribution of insecticide-treated cattle essential for tsetse control? Modelling the impact of baits in heterogeneous environments
Background:
Eliminating Rhodesian sleeping sickness, the zoonotic form of Human African Trypanosomiasis, can be achieved only through interventions against the vectors, species of tsetse (Glossina). The use of insecticide-treated cattle is the most cost-effective method of controlling tsetse but its impact might be compromised by the patchy distribution of livestock. A deterministic simulation model was used to analyse the effects of spatial heterogeneities in habitat and baits (insecticide-treated cattle and targets) on the distribution and abundance of tsetse.
Methodology/Principal Findings:
The simulated area comprised an operational block extending 32 km from an area of good habitat from which tsetse might invade. Within the operational block, habitat comprised good areas mixed with poor ones where survival probabilities and population densities were lower. In good habitat, the natural daily mortalities of adults averaged 6.14% for males and 3.07% for females; the population grew 8.46in a year following a 90% reduction in densities of adults and pupae, but expired when the population density of males was reduced to <0.1/km2; daily movement of adults averaged 249 m for males and 367 m for females. Baits were placed throughout the operational area, or patchily to simulate uneven distributions of cattle and targets. Gaps of 2–3 km between baits were inconsequential provided the average imposed mortality per km2 across the entire operational area was maintained. Leaving gaps 5–7 km wide inside an area where baits killed 10% per day delayed effective control by 4–11 years. Corrective measures that put a few baits within the gaps were more effective than deploying extra baits on the edges.
Conclusions/Significance:
The uneven distribution of cattle within settled areas is unlikely to compromise the impact of insecticide-treated cattle on tsetse. However, where areas of >3 km wide are cattle-free then insecticide-treated targets should be deployed to compensate for the lack of cattle
Dissipation Enhanced Asymmetric Transport in Quantum Ratchets
Quantum mechanical motion of a particle in a periodic asymmetric potential is
studied theoretically at zero temperature. It is shown based on semi-classical
approximation that the tunneling probability from one local minimum to the next
becomes asymmetric in the presence of weak oscillating field, even though there
is no macroscopic field gradient in average. Dissipation enhances this
asymmetry, and leads to a steady unidirectional current, resulting in a quantum

The objectives of the 1887 mission were: (1) to determine if the results of the SL-3 pituitary gland experiment (1) were repeatable; and (2) to determine what effect a longer mission would have on the rat pituitary gland growth hormone (GH) system. In the 1887 experiment two issues were considered especially important. First, it was recognized that cells prepared from individual rat pituitary glands should be considered separately so that the data from the 5 glands could be analyzed in a statistically meaningful way. Second, results of the SL-3 flight involving the hollow fiber implant and HPLC GH-variant experiments suggested that the biological activity of the hormone had been negatively affected by flight. The results of the 1887 experiment documented the wisdom of addressing both issues in the protocol. Thus, the reduction in secretory capacity of flight cells during subsequent extended cell culture on Earth was documented statistically, and thereby established the validity of the SL-3 result. The results of both flight experiments thus support the contention that there is a secretory lesion in pituitary GH cells of flight animals. The primary objective of both missions was a clear definition of the effect of spaceflight on the GH cell system. There can no longer be any reasonable doubt that this system is affected in microgravity. One explanation for the reason(s) underlying the better known effects of spaceflight on organisms, viz. changes in bone, muscle and immune systems may very well rest with such changes in bGH. In spite of the fact that rats in the Cosmos 1887 flight were on Earth for two days after flight, the data show that the GH system had still not recovered from the effects of flight. Many questions remain. One of the more important concerns the GRF responsiveness of somatotrophs after flight. This will be tested in an upcoming experiment

em Angola até 2 semanas antes do internamento. Apesar da terapêutica com quinino i.v. o quadro evoluiu com falência multiorgânica, nomeadamente coma, insuficiência renal, necrose hepática, diátese hemorrágica e rabdomiólise. Foi necessário instituir ventilação
mecânica e na terapêutica de suporte recorreu-se à administração de derivados plasmáticos, aminas vasoactivas e diuréticos em altas doses, tendo havido regressão do quadro clÃnico. Discutem-se as complicações bem como os factores de mau prognóstico presentes neste caso
