Contagious equine metritis in France
The authors describe the situation of the contagious equine metritis during the bueding season in 1988. 215 strains isolated from all breed of animals excepted thoroughbred have been studied. The isolation of the germ is often disturbed by the presence of other pathogenic germs such as Klebsiella, Streptococci, Sta phylococci, Colibacilles. It is of primordial importance that the delays before inoculation of the sample are as short as possible and the choice of sample's period. The physiologic conditions of the reproductive tract of the stallions and the mares at the period of breeding is an important factor towards the affection’s outbreak
Different diagnostic methods of tularemia. Critical study
A bibliographic study leads to bring to light respective advantages of the different diagnostic methods of tularemia. The immunofluorescence technique with monoclonal antibodies actually seems to present all qualities as much scientific : specificity and sensitivity, as technique : easily done, or social : security
Novelties about anthrax
Anthrax is coming back, such for animals with cases stated in cattle from 1980 to 1995 and two epidemics in 1997 as well for humans : many cases are known every year, but many others are unknown. Risk is reality, and it is neces sary that all the health professionals know well this fact
Importance of microbism in the semen of stallion
The authors described the important intervention of bacterial potential pathogens in the semen of stallion. The study was effectued on 325 semens in different breeds. The contamination was Klebsiella, Streptococcus equisimilis and zooepi- demicus, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Other saprophytic and potentially pathogenic to the stallion’s reproduc tive tract and mare’s reproductive tract are Aeromonas, Enterobacter, Serra tia, Acinetobacter, etc. 63 % of the semens were contamined with one bacteria (45 % ), with two bacteria (16,3 %), with three bacteria (1,2 %). The bacteriological controls of mares and stallions are necessary before breeding and the research of bacterial organisms is necessary

Detection of Erysipalothix rhusiopathiae in asymtpomatic carrier porks, turkeys and ducks breedings. First results
The authors have research the Erysipehthrix rhusiopathiœ portage in ducks, turkeys and guinea fowl flocks and pigs breedings on apparently healthy animals. Two selective medium have been utilized. 28% of the animals have been found carrier. The samples were hearts, intestinal content
Pneumococcal septicemiae (Streptococcus pneumoniae) in the calves
The authors describe an outbreak of pneumococcal septicemiae ( Strep tococcus pneumoniae ) in the calves in France. The disease take its course in very young animals of 0 to 8 weeks old up to 3 months. The evolution is very speedy (a few hours) with clinical signs of sub acute enteritis and diffuse pulmonary lesions ; this disease can be confused with collibacillosis and salmonellosis ; and the diagnosis can be made only by bacteriological examination. This affection is well known in Germany, Denmark and Switzerland, and exists in Italy and Great Britain. In France the disease exists but the evolution is such that the different phases of the different phases of the diagnosis are difficult. The serotye of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in this study is serotype 18 wich is rather frequent in human medicine
Tularemia : situation in france, issues and public health risk
This is a retrospective study on natural foci of tularemia in animals as well as human cases reported
in France between 1999 and 2004.
Since 1999, approximately 20 to 60 animals foci of infection in hares are detected every year in 19 to 34
French departments. Human cases often occur in areas where animal foci have erupted, but not always.
There are several reasons explaining the presence of this disease on French territory, its underestimation
in animals, and probably in man, and its durability. The disease is generally poorly recognised,
except amongst shooters who are aware of its existence. Several clinical forms are known in man,
sometimes with severe symptoms. The diagnosis of tularemia can be difficult due to its non-specific
clinical features. Tularemia is mostly described in hares but other species can be also affected, serving
as reservoirs for the infection and sometimes acting as vectors as well. The animal population
tested for tularemia should be widened to include other wild species, as well as some of our domestic
animals. In man, this diagnosis should be considered in people presenting certain clinical signs. A
background on epidemiological data is given. In addition, as Francisella tularensis is one of the bioterrorism
agents, it is essential that clinicians and biologists recognise this bacteria and are aware of
its dangers. Tularemia was removed from the list of Legally Contagious Disease in veterinary medicine
in 1996.
Genotyping of Bacillus anthracis strains based on automated capillary 25-loci Multiple Locus Variable-Number Tandem Repeats Analysis
BACKGROUND: The genome of Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax, is highly monomorphic which makes differentiation between strains difficult. A Multiple Locus Variable-number tandem repeats (VNTR) Analysis (MLVA) assay based on 20 markers was previously described. It has considerable discrimination power, reproducibility, and low cost, especially since the markers proposed can be typed by agarose-gel electrophoresis. However in an emergency situation, faster genotyping and access to representative databases is necessary. RESULTS: Genotyping of B. anthracis reference strains and isolates from France and Italy was done using a 25 loci MLVA assay combining 21 previously described loci and 4 new ones. DNA was amplified in 4 multiplex PCR reactions and the length of the resulting 25 amplicons was estimated by automated capillary electrophoresis. The results were reproducible and the data were consistent with other gel based methods once differences in mobility patterns were taken into account. Some alleles previously unresolved by agarose gel electrophoresis could be resolved by capillary electrophoresis, thus further increasing the assay resolution. One particular locus, Bams30, is the result of a recombination between a 27 bp tandem repeat and a 9 bp tandem repeat. The analysis of the array illustrates the evolution process of tandem repeats. CONCLUSION: In a crisis situation of suspected bioterrorism, standardization, speed and accuracy, together with the availability of reference typing data are important issues, as illustrated by the 2001 anthrax letters event. In this report we describe an upgrade of the previously published MLVA method for genotyping of B. anthracis and apply the method to the typing of French and Italian B. anthracis strain collections. The increased number of markers studied compared to reports using only 8 loci greatly improves the discrimination power of the technique. An Italian strain belonging to the B branch was described, and two new branches, D and E, are proposed. Owing to the upgrading achieved here, precise genotyping can now be produced either by automated capillary electrophoresis, or by the more accessible but slower and for some markers slightly less accurate agarose gel methodology
