    Charm in cosmic rays (The long-flying component of EAS cores)

    Experimental data on cosmic ray cascades with enlarged attenuation lengths (Tien-Shan effect) are presented and analyzed in terms of charm hadroproduction.     Background. The problem of bone defects replacement is relevant nowadays, that is why many scientists create new synthetic bone substitutes, but the ideal material has not been found so far. The aims of the study: 1) to determine the suitability of the monocortical defect model in the rat femur diaphysis with additional prophylactic reinforcement with a bone plate for assessing the biological properties of implanted materials using the commercially available ChronOS material as an example; 2) to assess of the osteoconductive properties of composite materials based on poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate and octacalcium phosphate with architecture Kelvin and gyroid types on the developed model. Methods. A prospective study, level of evidence II. A monocortical defect of the rat femoral diaphysis (length 7 mm) was produced under anaesthesia in aseptic conditions and fixed with a polyetheretherketone plate and six titanium screws. In the control group, the defect was left empty. In other groups, blocks of one of three materials were implanted сhronOS and composites of poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate and octacalcium phosphate with 3D-printed Kelvin and gyroid architectures. After 3 and 6 weeks, the rats were sacrificed, and histological examination of the defect zone was performed. The amount of newly formed bone tissue was histometricly assessed, followed by statistical processing of the results. Results. All rats have reached the planned endpoint, and there were no infectious complications or loss of fixation. Histological examination of the defect zone revealed minimal bone growth in the Control group, rather slow bone formation in the Gyroid group, and statistically significantly more pronounced bone formation in the pores of the materials in the Kelvin and Chronos groups. Conclusions. Bone defect in this model was not spontaneously filled with bone tissue and allowed us to study the biological properties of bone substitutes (the ability to biodegrade and osteoconductive properties). The osteoconductive properties of a composite material based on poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate and octacalcium phosphate with a Kelvin architecture are higher than with a gyroid architecture and are comparable to that of the сhronOS.ΠΠΊΡ‚ΡƒΠ°Π»ΡŒΠ½ΠΎΡΡ‚ΡŒ.     Energy Spectra of Abundant Nuclei of Primary Cosmic Rays from the Data of ATIC-2 Experiment: Final Results

    The final results of processing the data from the balloon-born experiment ATIC-2 (Antarctica, 2002-2003) for the energy spectra of protons and He, C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe nuclei, the spectrum of all particles, and the mean logarithm of atomic weight of primary cosmic rays as a function of energy are presented. The final results are based on improvement of the methods used earlier, in particular, considerably increased resolution of the charge spectrum. The preliminary conclusions on the significant difference in the spectra of protons and helium nuclei (the proton spectrum is steeper) and the non-power character of the spectra of protons and heavier nuclei (flattening of carbon spectrum at energies above 10 TeV) are confirmed.     Two Mathematically Equivalent Versions of Maxwell's Equations

    This paper is a review of the canonical proper-time approach to relativistic mechanics and classical electrodynamics. The purpose is to provide a physically complete classical background for a new approach to relativistic quantum theory. Here, we first show that there are two versions of Maxwell's equations. The new version fixes the clock of the field source for all inertial observers. However now, the (natural definition of the effective) speed of light is no longer an invariant for all observers, but depends on the motion of the source. This approach allows us to account for radiation reaction without the Lorentz-Dirac equation, self-energy (divergence), advanced potentials or any assumptions about the structure of the source. The theory provides a new invariance group which, in general, is a nonlinear and nonlocal representation of the Lorentz group. This approach also provides a natural (and unique) definition of simultaneity for all observers. The corresponding particle theory is independent of particle number, noninvariant under time reversal (arrow of time), compatible with quantum mechanics and has a corresponding positive definite canonical Hamiltonian associated with the clock of the source. We also provide a brief review of our work on the foundational aspects of the corresponding relativistic quantum theory.     Spontaneous Lorentz Violation via QED with Non-Exact Gauge Invariance

    We reconsider an alternative theory of the QED with the photon as a massless vector Nambu-Goldstone boson and show that the underlying spontaneous Lorentz violation caused by the vector field vacuum expectation value, while being superficial in gauge invariant theory, becomes physically significant in the QED with a tiny gauge non-invariance. This leads, through special dispersion relations appearing for charged fermions, to a new class of phenomena which could be of distinctive observational interest in particle physics and astrophysics. They include a significant change in the GZK cutoff for UHE cosmic-ray nucleons, stability of high-energy pions and W bosons, modification of nucleon beta decays, and some others.Comment: 15 pages, to appear in Eur.Phys.J.

    New precision measurement of the J/ψJ/\psi- and Οˆβ€²\psi' -meson masses

    A new high precision measurement of the J/ψJ/\psi- and Οˆβ€²\psi'-meson masses has been performed at the VEPP-4M collider using the KEDR detector. The resonant depolarization method has been employed for the absolute calibration of the beam energy. The following mass values have been obtained: MJ/ψ=3096.917Β±0.010Β±0.007M_{J/\psi} = 3096.917 \pm 0.010 \pm 0.007 MeV, MΟˆβ€²=3686.111Β±0.025Β±0.009M_{\psi'} = 3686.111 \pm 0.025 \pm 0.009 MeV. The relative measurement accuracy has reached 4.10βˆ’64. 10^{-6} for J/ψJ/\psi and 7.10βˆ’67. 10^{-6} for Οˆβ€²\psi', approximately 3 times better than in the previous precise experiments.Comment: 12 pages, 4 tables, 10 figure

    Improving the reliability of operation of electromechanical devices by means of ionistor-battery backup

    This article is devoted to the problem of improving the operation reliability of electromechanical devices and devices at electric power industry facilities. Particular attention is paid to the fact that in the Russian power system electromechanical devices and devices designed for a voltage class of 110 kV and higher are still the majority compared to microprocessor and microelectronic devices. Given their long service life and the inability to promptly replace all devices at once, improving the reliability of their operation is highly relevant. A schematic solution to the problem is developed. The scientific novelty of the proposed solution is of the fact that the redundant power supply circuit with operating current of electromechanical devices offers a consolidated use of innovative electric power storage devices, namely ionistors and classic rechargeable batteries combined according to a special circuit. This solution maximizes the operation reliability of both electromechanical devices and devices themselves, as well as their automatic control
