Superconducting nanowire quantum interference device based on Nb ultrathin films deposited on self-assembled porous Si templates
Magnetoresistance oscillations were observed on networks of superconducting
ultrathin Nb nanowires presenting evidences of either thermal or quantum
activated phase slips. The magnetic transport data, discussed in the framework
of different scenarios, reveal that the system behaves coherently in the
temperature range where the contribution of the fluctuations is important.Comment: accepted for publication on Nanotechnolog
Integrating Superconductive and Optical Circuits
We have integrated on oxidized silicon wafers superconductive films and
Josephson junctions along with sol-gel optical channel waveguides. The
fabrication process is carried out in two steps that result to be solid and
non-invasive. It is demonstrated that 660 nm light, coupled from an optical
fibre into the channel sol-gel waveguide, can be directed toward
superconducting tunnel junctions whose current-voltage characteristics are
affected by the presence of the radiation. The dependence of the change in the
superconducting energy gap under optical pumping is discussed in terms of a
non-equilibrium superconductivity model.Comment: Document composed of 7 pages of text and 3 figure
Form and width of spectral line of Josephson Flux-Flow oscillator
The behavior of a Josephson flux-flow oscillator in the presence of both bias
current and magnetic field fluctuations has been studied. To derive the
equation for slow phase dynamics in the limit of small noise intensity the
Poincare method has been used. Both the form of spectral line and the linewidth
of the flux-flow oscillator have been derived exactly on the basis of technique
presented in the book of Malakhov, known limiting cases are considered, limits
of their applicability are discussed and appearance of excess noise is
explained. Good coincidence of theoretical description with experimental
results has been demonstrated.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Long Josephson junctions with spatially inhomogeneous driving
The phase dynamics of a long Josephson junction with spatially
inhomogeneously distributed bias current is considered for the case of a dense
soliton chain (regime of the Flux Flow oscillator). To derive the analytical
solution of the corresponding sine-Gordon equation the Poincare method has been
used. In the range of the validity of the theory good coincidence between
analytically derived and numerically computed current-voltage characteristics
have been demonstrated for the simplest example of unitstep function
distribution of bias current (unbiased tail). It is shown, that for the
considered example of bias current distribution, there is an optimal length of
unbiased tail that maximizes the amplitude of the main harmonic and minimizes
the dynamical resistance (thus leading to reduction of a linewidth).Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Anthocyanins are Key Regulators of Drought Stress Tolerance in Tobacco
Abiotic stresses will be one of the major challenges for worldwide food supply in the near future. Therefore, it is important to understand the physiological mechanisms that mediate plant responses to abiotic stresses. When subjected to UV, salinity or drought stress, plants accumulate specialized metabolites that are often correlated with their ability to cope with the stress. Among them, anthocyanins are the most studied intermediates of the phenylpropanoid pathway. However, their role in plant response to abiotic stresses is still under discussion. To better understand the effects of anthocyanins on plant physiology and morphogenesis, and their implications on drought stress tolerance, we used transgenic tobacco plants (AN1), which over-accumulated anthocyanins in all tissues. AN1 plants showed an altered phenotype in terms of leaf gas exchanges, leaf morphology, anatomy and metabolic profile, which conferred them with a higher drought tolerance compared to the wild-type plants. These results provide important insights for understanding the functional reason for anthocyanin accumulation in plants under stress
Quantum phase slips in superconducting Nb nanowire networks deposited on self-assembled Si templates
Robust porous silicon substrates were employed for generating interconnected
networks of superconducting ultrathin Nb nanowires. Scanning electron
microscopy analysis was performed to investigate the morphology of the samples,
which constitute of polycrystalline single wires with grain size of about 10
nm. The samples exhibit nonzero resistance over a broad temperature range below
the critical temperature, fingerprint of phase slippage processes. The
transport data are satisfactory reproduced by models describing both thermal
and quantum fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter in thin
homogeneous superconducting wires.Comment: accepted for publication on Applied Physics Letter
Coupling of Josephson flux-flow oscillators to an external RC load
We investigate by numerical simulations the behavior of the power dissipated
in a resistive load capacitively coupled to a Josephson flux flow oscillator
and compare the results to those obtained for a d.c. coupled purely resistive
load. Assuming realistic values for the parameters R and C, both in the high-
and in the low-Tc case the power is large enough to allow the operation of such
a device in applications.Comment: uuencoded, gzipped tar archive containing 11 pages of REVTeX text + 4

Topology-Induced Critical Current Enhancement in Josephson Networks
We investigate the properties of Josephson junction networks with
inhomogeneous architecture. The networks are shaped as "quare comb" planar
lattices on which Josephson junctions link superconducting islands arranged in
the plane to generate the pertinent topology. Compared to the behavior of
reference linear arrays, the temperature dependencies of the Josephson currents
of the branches of the network exhibit relevant differences. The observed
phenomena evidence new and surprising behavior of superconducting Josephson
arrays as well as remarkable similarities with bosonic junction arrays.Comment: improved figures (added magnetic pattern and single junction
switching) some changes in the text and in the titl
Experimental investigation of flux motion in exponentially shaped Josephson junctions
We report experimental and numerical analysis of expontentially shaped long
Josephson junctions with lateral current injection. Quasi-linear flux flow
branches are observed in the current-voltage characteristic of the junctions in
the absence of magnetic field. A strongly asymmetric response to an applied
magnetic field is also exhibited by the junctions. Experimental data are found
in agreement with numerical predictions and demonstrate the existence of a
geometry-induced potential experienced by the flux quanta in nonuniform width
junctions.Comment: 16 pg, 8 figures, Submitted in PRB March
