Supernovae as Probes of Extra Dimensions

    Get PDF
Since the dawn of the new millennium, there has been a revived interest in the concept of extra dimensions. In this scenario all the standard model matter and gauge fields are confined to the 4 dimensions and only gravity can escape to higher dimensions of the universe. This idea can be tested using table-top experiments, collider experiments, astrophysical or cosmological observations. The main astrophysical constraints come from the cooling rate of supernovae, neutron stars, red giants and the sun. In this article, we consider the energy loss mechanism of SN1987A and study the constraints it places on the number and size of extra dimensions and the higher dimensional Planck scale.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, new references are adde

Quantum Pumping with Ultracold Atoms on Microchips: Fermions versus Bosons

We present a design for simulating quantum pumping of electrons in a mesoscopic circuit with ultra-cold atoms in a micro-magnetic chip trap. We calculate theoretical results for quantum pumping of both bosons and fermions, identifying differences and common features, including geometric behavior and resonance transmission. We analyze the feasibility of experiments with bosonic 87^{87}Rb and fermionic 40^{40}K atoms with an emphasis on reliable atomic current measurements.Comment: 4 pages; 4 figure

Chirality in Quantum Computation with Spin Cluster Qubits

We study corrections to the Heisenberg interaction between several lateral, single-electron quantum dots. We show, using exact diagonalization, that three-body chiral terms couple triangular configurations to external sources of flux rather strongly. The chiral corrections impact single qubit encodings utilizing loops of three or more Heisenberg coupled quantum dots.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
