Diel and seasonal timing of sound production by black drum (Pogonias cromis)
Acoustic recorders were used to document black drum (Pogonias cromis) sound production during their spawning season in southwest Florida. Diel patterns of sound production were similar to those of other sciaenid fishes and demonstrated increased sound levels from the late afternoon to early evening—a period that lasted up to 12 hours during peak season. Peak sound production occurred from January through March when water temperatures were between 18° and 22°C. Seasonal trends in sound production
matched patterns of black drum reproductive readiness and spawning reported previously for populations in the Gulf of Mexico. Total acoustic energy of nightly chorus events was
estimated by integration of the sound pressure amplitude with duration above a threshold based on daytime background levels. Maximum chorus sound level was highly correlated with total acoustic energy and was used to quantitatively represent nightly black drum sound production. This study
gives evidence that long-term passive acoustic recordings can provide information on the timing and location of black drum reproductive behavior that is similar to that provided by traditional, more costly methods. The methods and results have broad application for the study of many other
fish species, including commercially and recreationally valuable reef fishes that produce sound in association with
reproductive beha

The hypothesis that cold dark matter consists of primordial superheavy
particles, the decay of short lifetime component of which led to the observable
mass of matter while long living component survived up to modern times
manifesting its presence in high energetic cosmic rays particles is

Neutrinos with Lorentz-violating operators of arbitrary dimension
The behavior of fermions in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation is
studied. Allowing for operators of any mass dimension, we classify all
Lorentz-violating terms in the quadratic Lagrange density for free fermions.
The result is adapted to obtain the effective hamiltonian describing the
propagation and mixing of three flavors of left-handed neutrinos in the
presence of Lorentz violation involving operators of arbitrary mass dimension.
A characterization of the neutrino coefficients for Lorentz violation is
provided via a decomposition using spin-weighted spherical harmonics. The
restriction of the general theory to various special cases is discussed,
including among others the renormalizable limit, the massless scenario,
flavor-blind and oscillation-free models, the diagonalizable case, and several
isotropic limits. The formalism is combined with existing data on neutrino
oscillations and kinematics to extract a variety of measures of coefficients
for Lorentz and CPT violation. For oscillations, we use results from the
short-baseline experiments LSND and MiniBooNE to obtain explicit sensitivities
to effects from flavor-mixing Lorentz-violating operators up to mass dimension
10, and we present methods to analyze data from long-baseline experiments. For
propagation, we use time-of-flight measurements from the supernova SN1987A and
from a variety of experiments including MINOS and OPERA to constrain
oscillation-free Lorentz-violating operators up to mass dimension 10, and we
discuss constraints from threshold effects in meson decays and Cherenkov

Higher Dimensional Taub-NUTs and Taub-Bolts in Einstein-Maxwell Gravity
We present a class of higher dimensional solutions to Einstein-Maxwell
equations in d-dimensions. These solutions are asymptotically locally flat,
de-Sitter, or anti-de Sitter space-times. The solutions we obtained depend on
two extra parameters other than the mass and the nut charge. These two
parameters are the electric charge, q and the electric potential at infinity,
V, which has a non-trivial contribution. We Analyze the conditions one can
impose to obtain Taub-Nut or Taub-Bolt space-times, including the
four-dimensional case. We found that in the nut case these conditions coincide
with that coming from the regularity of the one-form potential at the horizon.
Furthermore, the mass parameter for the higher dimensional solutions depends on
the nut charge and the electric charge or the potential at infinity.Comment: 11 pages, LaTe
Sneutrino condensate source for density perturbations, leptogenesis and low reheat temperature
We bring together some known ingredients beyond the Standard Model physics
which can explain the hot Big Bang model with the observed baryon asymmetry and
also the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation with a
minimal set of assumptions. We propose an interesting scenario where the
inflaton energy density is dumped into an infinitely large extra dimension.
Instead of the inflaton it is the right handed sneutrino condensate, which is
acquiring non-zero vacuum expectation value during inflation, whose
fluctuations are responsible for the density perturbations seen in the cosmic
microwave background radiation with a spectral index . The decay
of the condensate is explaining the reheating of the Universe with a
temperature, GeV, and the baryon asymmetry of order one

Chaos in an Exact Relativistic 3-body Self-Gravitating System
We consider the problem of three body motion for a relativistic
one-dimensional self-gravitating system. After describing the canonical
decomposition of the action, we find an exact expression for the 3-body
Hamiltonian, implicitly determined in terms of the four coordinate and momentum
degrees of freedom in the system. Non-relativistically these degrees of freedom
can be rewritten in terms of a single particle moving in a two-dimensional
hexagonal well. We find the exact relativistic generalization of this
potential, along with its post-Newtonian approximation. We then specialize to
the equal mass case and numerically solve the equations of motion that follow
from the Hamiltonian. Working in hexagonal-well coordinates, we obtaining
orbits in both the hexagonal and 3-body representations of the system, and plot
the Poincare sections as a function of the relativistic energy parameter . We find two broad categories of periodic and quasi-periodic motions that we
refer to as the annulus and pretzel patterns, as well as a set of chaotic
motions that appear in the region of phase-space between these two types.
Despite the high degree of non-linearity in the relativistic system, we find
that the the global structure of its phase space remains qualitatively the same
as its non-relativisitic counterpart for all values of that we could
study. However the relativistic system has a weaker symmetry and so its
Poincare section develops an asymmetric distortion that increases with
increasing . For the post-Newtonian system we find that it experiences a
KAM breakdown for : above which the near integrable regions

Composition of Jupiter irregular satellites sheds light on their origin
Irregular satellites of Jupiter with their highly eccentric, inclined and
distant orbits suggest that their capture took place just before the giant
planet migration. We aim to improve our understanding of the surface
composition of irregular satellites of Jupiter to gain insight into a narrow
time window when our Solar System was forming. We observed three Jovian
irregular satellites, Himalia, Elara, and Carme, using a medium-resolution
0.8-5.5 micro m spectrograph on the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). Using a linear
spectral unmixing model we have constrained the major mineral phases on the
surface of these three bodies. Our results confirm that the surface of Himalia,
Elara, and Carme are dominated by opaque materials such as those seen in
carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Our spectral modeling of NIR spectra of
Himalia and Elara confirm that their surface composition is the same and
magnetite is the dominant mineral. A comparison of the spectral shape of
Himalia with the two large main C-type asteroids, Themis (D 176 km) and Europa
(D 352 km), suggests surface composition similar to Europa. The NIR spectrum of
Carme exhibits blue slope up to 1.5 microm and is spectrally distinct from
those of Himalia and Elara. Our model suggests that it is compositionally
similar to amorphous carbon. Himalia and Elara are compositionally similar but
differ significantly from Carme. These results support the hypotheses that the
Jupiter irregular satellites are captured bodies that were subject to further
breakup events and clustered as families based on their similar physical and
surface compositions
Mesons and tachyons with confinement and chiral restoration, and NA60
In this paper the spectrum of quark-antiquark systems, including light mesons
and tachyons, is studied in the true vacuum and in the chiral invariant vacuum.
The mass gap equation for the vacua and the Salpeter-RPA equation for the
mesons are solved for a simple chiral invariant and confining quark model. At
T=0 and in the true vacuum, the scalar and pseudoscalar, or the vector and
axial vector are not degenerate, and in the chiral limit, the pseudoscalar
groundstates are Goldstone bosons. At T=0 the chiral invariant vacuum is an
unstable vacuum, decaying through an infinite number of scalar and pseudoscalar
tachyons. Nevertheless the axialvector and vector remain mesons, with real
masses. To illustrate the chiral restoration, an arbitrary path between the two
vacua is also studied. Different families of light-light and heavy-light
mesons, sensitive to chiral restoration, are also studied. At higher
temperatures the potential must be suppressed, and the chiral symmetry can be
restored without tachyons, but then all mesons have small real masses.
Implications for heavy-ion collisions, in particular for the recent vector
meson spectra measured by the NA60 collaboration, are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
On the Standard Approach to Renormalization Group Improvement
Two approaches to renormalization-group improvement are examined: the
substitution of the solutions of running couplings, masses and fields into
perturbatively computed quantities is compared with the systematic sum of all
the leading log (LL), next-to-leading log (NLL) etc. contributions to
radiatively corrected processes, with n-loop expressions for the running
quantities being responsible for summing N^{n}LL contributions. A detailed
comparison of these procedures is made in the context of the effective
potential V in the 4-dimensional O(4) massless model,
showing the distinction between these procedures at two-loop order when
considering the NLL contributions to the effective potential V.Comment: 6 page
