Magneto-optic Kerr effect in a spin-polarized zero-moment ferrimagnet
The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is often assumed to be proportional to
the magnetisation of a magnetically ordered metallic sample; in metallic
ferrimagnets with chemically distinct sublattices, such as rare-earth
transition-metal alloys, it depends on the difference between the sublattice
contributions. Here we show that in a highly spin polarized, fully compensated
ferrimagnet, where the sublattices are chemically similar, MOKE is observed
even when the net moment is strictly zero. We analyse the spectral ellipsometry
and MOKE of Mn 2 Ru x Ga, and show that this behaviour is due to a highly
spin-polarized conduction band dominated by one of the two manganese
sublattices which creates helicity-dependent reflectivity determined by a broad
Drude tail. Our findings open new prospects for studying spin dynamics in the

Interactions between permeation and gating in the TMEM16B/anoctamin2 calcium-activated chloride channel
At least two members of the TMEM16/anoctamin family, TMEM16A (also known as anoctamin1) and TMEM16B (also known as anoctamin2), encode Ca2+-activated Cl- channels (CaCCs), which are found in various cell types and mediate numerous physiological functions. Here, we used whole-cell and excised inside-out patch-clamp to investigate the relationship between anion permeation and gating, two processes typically viewed as independent, in TMEM16B expressed in HEK 293T cells. The permeability ratio sequence determined by substituting Cl- with other anions (PX/PCl) was SCN- > I- > NO3- > Br- > Cl- > F- > gluconate. When external Cl- was substituted with other anions, TMEM16B activation and deactivation kinetics at 0.5 μM Ca2+ were modified according to the sequence of permeability ratios, with anions more permeant than Cl- slowing both activation and deactivation and anions less permeant than Cl- accelerating them. Moreover, replacement of external Cl- with gluconate, or sucrose, shifted the voltage dependence of steady-state activation (G-V relation) to more positive potentials, whereas substitution of extracellular or intracellular Cl- with SCN- shifted G-V to more negative potentials. Dose-response relationships for Ca2+ in the presence of different extracellular anions indicated that the apparent affinity for Ca2+ at +100 mV increased with increasing permeability ratio. The apparent affinity for Ca2+ in the presence of intracellular SCN- also increased compared with that in Cl-. Our results provide the first evidence that TMEM16B gating is modulated by permeant anions and provide the basis for future studies aimed at identifying the molecular determinants of TMEM16B ion selectivity and gating. © 2014 Betto et al
Impacto de los componentes del capital de trabajo en el valor de las empresas peruanas listadas en la Bolsa de Valores de Lima (BVL) durante el periodo 2010-2018
El objetivo principal de esta tesis es analizar el impacto de los componentes del capital de trabajo en el valor de las empresas de las empresas que cotizan en la Bolsa de Valores de Lima durante el periodo 2010 - 2018. Esta investigaci?n adopta un enfoque cuantitativo mediante un an?lisis utilizando el modelo datos de panel con efectos fijos muestra las relaciones existentes entre las variables dependientes, las cuales miden el valor y la rentabilidad de la empresa, y las variables independientes planteadas, identificando las principales relaciones significativas y explicativas. Lo m?s resaltante que se concluye es que en el Sector Manufactura existe una relaci?n significativa positiva entre el periodo medio de pago con el valor de la empresa medido a trav?s del ROE; adem?s, se encuentra una relaci?n negativa entre el ciclo de conversi?n de efectivo y el valor de la empresa medido a trav?s del ROE. En el Sector Miner?a e Hidrocarburos se encuentra una relaci?n positiva entre el periodo de conversi?n de inventarios con el valor de la empresa medido a trav?s del ROA, as? tambi?n, se identifica una relaci?n positiva entre el ciclo de conversi?n de efectivo y el valor de la empresa medido con ROE
Slow Magnetic Relaxation of Dy Adatoms with In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy on a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas
We report on the magnetic properties of Dy atoms adsorbed on the (001) surface of SrTiO3. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals slow relaxation of the Dy magnetization on a time scale of about 800 s at 2.5 K, unusually associated with an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. We attribute these properties to Dy atoms occupying hollow adsorption sites on the TiO2-terminated surface. Conversely, Ho atoms adsorbed on the same surface show paramagnetic behavior down to 2.5 K. With the help of atomic multiplet simulations and first-principles calculations, we establish that Dy populates also the top-O and bridge sites on the coexisting SrO-terminated surface. A simple magnetization relaxation model predicts these two sites to have an even longer magnetization lifetime than the hollow site. Moreover, the adsorption of Dy on the insulating SrTiO3 crystal leads, regardless of the surface termination, to the formation of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas of Ti 3dxy character, together with an antiferromagnetic Dy-Ti coupling. Threatened and extinct amphibians and reptiles in Italian natural history collections are useful conservation tools
Natural history museums are irreplaceable tools to study and preserve the biological diversity around the globe and among the primary actors in the recognition of species and the logical repositories for their type specimens. In this paper we surveyed the consistency of the preserved specimens of amphibians and reptiles housed in the major Italian scientific collections, and verified the presence of threatened species according to the IUCN Red List, includ-ing the Extinct (EX), Extinct in the Wild (EW), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (VU) categories. Altogether, we analyzed 39 Italian zoological collections. We confirmed the presence of one extinct reptile (Chioninia coctei) and five extinct or extinct in the wild amphibian species (Atelopus longirostris, Nectophrynoides asperginis, Pseudophilautus leucorhinus, P. nasutus, and P. variabilis). Seven CR amphibians, fourteen CR reptile species and the extinct skink C. coctei are shared by more than one institution. Museums which host the highest number of threatened and extinct amphibian species are respectively Turin (17 CR and 1 EX), Florence (13 CR and 1 EX), and Trento (15 CR and 1 EW), while for reptiles the richest museums are those from Genoa (15 CR and 1 EX), Florence (11 CR and 1 EX), and Pisa (7 CR). Finally, we discussed the utility of natural history museums and the strategies to follow for the implementation of their functionality. © Firenze University Press
A 48-week update of a multicentre real-life experience of dupilumab in adult patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis
The long-term efficacy and safety of dupilumab has been demonstrated in clinical trials and only in few real-world studies. We conducted an extension analysis from a previous 16-week study on 109 adult patients affected by moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis treated with dupilumab. Eczema-Area-and-Severity-Index (EASI), itch numerical-rating-score (itch-NRS), Dermatology-Life-Quality-Index (DLQI) scores, drug survival rate and occurrence of adverse events after 24 and 48 weeks of dupilumab treatment were retrospectively collected. Dupilumab demonstrated sustained improvement of disease severity, pruritus, and quality of life in our series with an increasing percentage of patients gaining EASI75 and EASI90 response during the study period. Few patients interrupted treatment resulting in a very high drug survival rate. We also confirmed the favorable safety profile of the drug with absence of serious adverse events and serious infections throughout the 48-week period. The prevalence of conjunctivitis was low and mainly occurred in the mid-term with resolution of the majority of cases at 48 weeks
Wild food plants of popular use in Sicily
In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. Data concerning 188 wild species used in the traditional Sicilian cuisine are reported. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhabitants suggested in the prevention or treatment of symptomatologies caused by a refined diet, poor in vegetables. These data want to contribute to avoid the loss of traditional knowledge on uses and recipes concerning wild food botanicals, and to encourage further studies for those species that have not yet been sufficiently researched in their food chemical and nutritional profile. These studies may also suggest new applications for a few botanicals in medico-nutritional fields. Phylogeography of Aegean green toads (Bufo viridis subgroup): continental hybrid swarm vs. insular diversification with discovery of a new island endemic
BACKGROUND: Debated aspects in speciation research concern the amount of gene flow between incipient species under secondary contact and the modes by which post-zygotic isolation accumulates. Secondary contact zones of allopatric lineages, involving varying levels of divergence, provide natural settings for comparative studies, for which the Aegean (Eastern Mediterranean) geography offers unique scenarios. In Palearctic green toads (Bufo viridis subgroup or Bufotes), Plio-Pleistocene (~ 2.6 Mya) diverged species show a sharp transition without contemporary gene flow, while younger lineages, diverged in the Lower-Pleistocene (~ 1.9 Mya), admix over tens of kilometers. Here, we conducted a fine-scale multilocus phylogeographic analysis of continental and insular green toads from the Aegean, where a third pair of taxa, involving Mid-Pleistocene diverged (~ 1.5 Mya) mitochondrial lineages, earlier tentatively named viridis and variabilis, (co-)occurs. RESULTS: We discovered a new lineage, endemic to Naxos (Central Cyclades), while coastal islands and Crete feature weak genetic differentiation from the continent. In continental Greece, both lineages, viridis and variabilis, form a hybrid swarm, involving massive mitochondrial and nuclear admixture over hundreds of kilometers, without obvious selection against hybrids. CONCLUSIONS: The genetic signatures of insular Aegean toads appear governed by bathymetry and Quaternary sea level changes, resulting in long-term isolation (Central Cyclades: Naxos) and recent land-bridges (coastal islands). Conversely, Crete has been isolated since the end of the Messinian salinity crisis (5.3 My) and Cretan populations thus likely result from human-mediated colonization, at least since Antiquity, from Peloponnese and Anatolia. Comparisons of green toad hybrid zones support the idea that post-zygotic hybrid incompatibilities accumulate gradually over the genome. In this radiation, only one million years of divergence separate a scenario of complete reproductive isolation, from a secondary contact resulting in near panmixia
Triadin/Junctin Double Null Mouse Reveals a Differential Role for Triadin and Junctin in Anchoring CASQ to the jSR and Regulating Ca2+ Homeostasis
Triadin (Tdn) and Junctin (Jct) are structurally related transmembrane proteins thought to be key mediators of structural and functional interactions between calsequestrin (CASQ) and ryanodine receptor (RyRs) at the junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum (jSR). However, the specific contribution of each protein to the jSR architecture and to excitation-contraction (e-c) coupling has not been fully established. Here, using mouse models lacking either Tdn (Tdn-null), Jct (Jct-null) or both (Tdn/Jct-null), we identify Tdn as the main component of periodically located anchors connecting CASQ to the RyR-bearing jSR membrane. Both proteins proved to be important for the structural organization of jSR cisternae and retention of CASQ within them, but with different degrees of impact. Our results also suggest that the presence of CASQ is responsible for the wide lumen of the jSR cisternae. Using Ca2+ imaging and Ca2+ selective microelectrodes we found that changes in e-c coupling, SR Ca2+content and resting [Ca2+] in Jct, Tdn and Tdn/Jct-null muscles are directly correlated to the effect of each deletion on CASQ content and its organization within the jSR. These data suggest that in skeletal muscle the disruption of Tdn/CASQ link has a more profound effect on jSR architecture and myoplasmic Ca2+ regulation than Jct/CASQ association
