    Neuroscience, Empathy, and Violent Crime in an Incarcerated Population: A Narrative Review.

    Empathy is a fundamental construct that allows individuals to perceive and understand the cognitive and emotional state of others. Empathy is not only a psychological and sociological concept; it also heavily impacts our daily lives by affecting our decisions and actions. Empathy is connected to and involves specific parts of the brain which, if damaged or of reduced volume, can lead to actions that are morally unjust, aggressive, or simply denoting a lack of understanding and sensitivity. The literature affirms that the low level of empathy, guilt, embarrassment, and moral reasoning displayed by violent and psychopathic criminals is strongly associated with empathy-linked brain regions that are smaller in size or less developed. The aim of this review is to show empirical data over the last 5 years on the connection between empathy and neuroscience among violent and psychopathic offenders, reflecting on future research on the topic

    Rational timing of combination therapy with tiotropium and formoterol in moderate and severe COPD.

    AIM: To determine which timing of therapy with formoterol (FOR) and/or tiotropium (TIO) shows the greater and more continuous functional improvement during 24 h in patients with moderate to severe COPD. METHODS: In this randomised, blind, crossover study 80 patients with stable COPD (40 moderate and 40 severe) received 5 different bronchodilator 30-day treatments in a random order. Treatments (Tr) were: Tr1: TIO 18 microg once-daily (8 am); Tr2: TIO 18 microg (8 am) + FOR 12 microg (8 pm); Tr3: FOR 12 microg twice-daily (8 am and 8 pm); Tr4: TIO 18 microg (8 am) + FOR 12 microg twice-daily (8 am and 8 pm); Tr5: FOR 12 microg twice-daily (8 am and 8 pm) + TIO 18 microg (8 pm). Spirometries were performed during 24 h (13 steps) on Day1 and Day30. End-points were: gain of FEV(1) (DeltaFEV(1)) from baseline of the Day1 and Day30, AUC (Area Under Curve), Dyspnoea Index, and as-needed use of salbutamol. RESULTS: Sixty-eight patients completed all treatments. The greater and continuous daily functional improvement was showed during Tr4 and Tr5 (Day1 +135.8 mL and +119.1 mL; Day30 +160.2 mL, and +160.5 mL, respectively). Daily means of DeltaFEV(1) were significantly different between single-drug treatments and combination therapy. Dyspnoea was greater in single-drug treatments. Less use of rescue salbutamol was reported in Tr4 (0.80 puffs/die) and Tr5 (0.71 puffs/die). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with moderate to severe COPD, combination therapy with tiotropium administered in the morning (Tr4) was the most effective; in patients with prevailing night-symptoms, treatment with tiotropium in the evening (Tr5) reduced symptoms and use of salbutamol. Tr5 showed less variability of FEV(1) during the 24 h (CV=0.256). These results are relevant for opening new ways in clinical practice

    The aim of the NATO-SPS SOLE project is demonstrating the feasibility and the high performance of a radar network thanks to photonics. Indeed, the coherence offered by photonics makes the proposed distributed radar system capable of an efficient implementation of MIMO processing and ISAR imaging, enhancing the performance in terms of resolution and precision. The advantage of a fully coherent, multistatic radar system here is experimentally proven by a 5-time cross-range resolution enhancement thanks to MIMO processing, and in an efficient focusing in ISAR imaging

    Identification of putative adult stem cells in the rat thyroid and their use in ex situ bioengineering

    Adult stem cells have been recently isolated from the human and mouse thyroid. Identification has been possible by their capacity to form floating cell spheroids or thyrospheres when primary cells are cultured in the absence of serum but presence of epidermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor, as well as by the presence of stem cell markers like the breast cancer-resistant protein 1 (Bcrp1)/ATP-binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2). Using this strategy, and an innovative in vitro growing system, we have attempted identification of stem / progenitor elements from the adult rat thyroid. Sprague-Dawley male rats (50-75 gr) were used as thyroid donors. After penthobarbital anesthesia rats were thyroidectomised, thyroids surgically excised, and primary cells prepared using enzymatic breaking. After 72 hs in standard monolayer culture, cells were trypsinized and either seeded (20 x103/cm2) and grown for 8 days in a 3D Matrigel (12.5-50%) system using low-glucose DMEM and serum, or immediately cytospinned (1200 RPM x 5 min) for immunocytochemistry, or harvested and frozen with lysis buffer for Western blotting (WB). Bcrp1/ ABCG2-immunoreactivity (IR) was detected using a rabbit anti-human, polyclonal antibody (1:500, Cell Signalling), and visualized either with the ABC technique and DAB as a chromogen, or with a chemiluminescence-based staining. The human plasmocytoma cell line, RPMI 8226 (B lymphocytes) and the acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line CCRF-CEM (T lymphocytes) were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. Thyrosphere-like aggregates were transiently observed after initial monolayer expansion and, more consistently, at day 3 in 50% Matrigel culture, followed by rapid cell differentiation (days 4-8), including epithelial-mesenchymal transitions, formation of follicles and pavment layering. Similar differentiation changes were also detected after seeding of primary thyroid cells onto decellularized rat thyroid matrixes, as previously reported [1]. Less than 0.4% of cytospinned thyroid cells exhibited cytoplasmic Bcrp1/ABCG2-IR, and a band of around 72kD was detected by WB in cell lysates. We conclude that the thyroid of the adult rat contains a small population of stem / progenitor-like elements, likely contributing to the regenerative processes that occur during ex situ recellularization of acellular thyroid matrixes [1, 2]

    IN the Upper Triassic dolomitic successions of the Monti della Maddalena area (Southern Apennines) consist of white, heavily recrystallized and cataclastic dolomites evidences of bioconstructions can be found in several localities. These evidences are represented by rudstones and possibly boundstones whose main components are fragments of sponges (sphinctozoans, inozoans, chaetetids) and corals generally encrusted by foraminifera, red algae and ‘problematica’. This association is much more diversified with respect to that of the microbial-serpulid buildups which characterize the platform margin facies of most Upper Triassic successions of the Southern Apennines. The Monti della Maddalena biofacies can be more readily compared with the bioconstructed facies of Sicily and in general with the Dachstein-type reef of the Tethyan realm. The studied successions are interpreted (according to the model of Cirilli et al., 1999) as formed at the margin of a carbonate platform facing a deep basin having good connection with the open sea, while the microbial-serpulid buildups formed on the margin of intraplatform restricted troughs with poorly oxygenated bottom waters. Our study discusses the relative paleogeographic position of the Apennine platforms and the Lagonegro Basin. The overall picture of the bioconstructed Triassic facies distribution in Southern Apennines, together with biofacies data from resedimented facies of Lucania, are compatible with paleogeographic reconstructions interpreting the Monti della Maddalena successions as representing the more external sector of the Apennine platforms system flanking the Lagonegro Basin. The latter, bordered on its external side by Apulia, was part of a deep Mesozoic domain comprising the Imerese–Sicani basin of Sicily and connected westward with the East Mediterranean branch of Western Tethys.
