    Experiment and Theory in Computations of the He Atom Ground State

    Extensive variational computations are reported for the ground state energy of the non-relativistic two-electron atom. Several different sets of basis functions were systematically explored, starting with the original scheme of Hylleraas. The most rapid convergence is found with a combination of negative powers and a logarithm of the coordinate s = r_{1}+ r_{2}. At N=3091 terms we pass the previous best calculation (Korobov's 25 decimal accuracy with N=5200 terms) and we stop at N=10257 with E = -2.90372 43770 34119 59831 11592 45194 40444 ... Previous mathematical analysis sought to link the convergence rate of such calculations to specific analytic properties of the functions involved. The application of that theory to this new experimental data leaves a rather frustrating situation, where we seem able to do little more than invoke vague concepts, such as ``flexibility.'' We conclude that theoretical understanding here lags well behind the power of available computing machinery.Comment: 15 page

    Near-field scanning microwave microscope for interline capacitance characterization of nanoelectronics interconnect

    We have developed a noncontact method for measurement of the interline capacitance in Cu/low-k interconnect. It is based on a miniature test vehicle with net capacitance of a few femto-Farads formed by two 20-\mu m-long parallel wires (lines) with widths and spacings the same as those of the interconnect wires of interest. Each line is connected to a small test pad. The vehicle impedance is measured at 4 GHz by a near-field microwave probe with 10 \mu m probe size via capacitive coupling of the probe to the vehicle's test pads. Full 3D finite element modeling at 4 GHz confirms that the microwave radiation is concentrated between the two wires forming the vehicle. An analytical lumped element model and a short/open calibration approach have been proposed to extract the interline capacitance value from the measured data. We have validated the technique on several test vehicles made with copper and low-k dielectric on a 300 mm wafer. The vehicles interline spacing ranges from 0.09 to 1 \mu m and a copper line width is 0.15 \mu m. This is the first time a near-field scanning microwave microscope has been applied to measure the lumped element impedance of a test vehicle

    Vocational education and economic environments : conflict or convergence?

    A better understanding of the relationship between economic policies and human capital formation through vocational education and training (VET) will help both development strategists and education planners. With this in mind, the paper begins with a social systems model to trace the impact of the economic environment and policies on the internal and external efficiency of VET. It continues with a discussion of how specific economic policies can shape efforts to improve the internal and external efficiency of VET. Some evidence of this relationship is provided in a review of the VET experience in selected countries.     Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks with Quality-of-Service Constraints

    A game-theoretic model is proposed to study the cross-layer problem of joint power and rate control with quality of service (QoS) constraints in multiple-access networks. In the proposed game, each user seeks to choose its transmit power and rate in a distributed manner in order to maximize its own utility while satisfying its QoS requirements. The user's QoS constraints are specified in terms of the average source rate and an upper bound on the average delay where the delay includes both transmission and queuing delays. The utility function considered here measures energy efficiency and is particularly suitable for wireless networks with energy constraints. The Nash equilibrium solution for the proposed non-cooperative game is derived and a closed-form expression for the utility achieved at equilibrium is obtained. It is shown that the QoS requirements of a user translate into a "size" for the user which is an indication of the amount of network resources consumed by the user. Using this competitive multiuser framework, the tradeoffs among throughput, delay, network capacity and energy efficiency are studied. In addition, analytical expressions are given for users' delay profiles and the delay performance of the users at Nash equilibrium is quantified.Comment: Accpeted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Communication

    Diabetes, TZDs, and Bone: A Review of the Clinical Evidence

    Evidence from rodent and in vitro models suggests that activation of PPAR-Ī³ by thiazolidinediones (TZDs) causes increased bone marrow adiposity and decreased osteoblastogenesis, resulting in bone loss. TZDs are prescribed for the treatment of diabetes, providing an opportunity to determine whether PPAR-Ī³ activation also impacts bone in humans. In addition, since type 2 diabetes is associated with higher fracture risk, an understanding of the clinical impact of TZDs on bone is needed to guide fracture prevention efforts in this population. This review summarizes current findings regarding type 2 diabetes and increased fracture risk and then considers the available evidence regarding TZD use and bone metabolism in humans
