A Scintillating Fiber Tracker With SiPM Readout
We present a prototype for the first tracking detector consisting of 250
micron thin scintillating fibers and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays. The
detector has a modular design, each module consists of a mechanical support
structure of 10mm Rohacell foam between two 100 micron thin carbon fiber skins.
Five layers of scintillating fibers are glued to both top and bottom of the
support structure. SiPM arrays with a channel pitch of 250 micron are placed in
front of the fibers. We show the results of the first module prototype using
multiclad fibers of types Bicron BCF-20 and Kuraray SCSF-81M that were read out
by novel 32-channel SiPM arrays from FBK-irst/INFN Perugia as well as
32-channel SiPM arrays produced by Hamamatsu. A spatial resolution of 88 micron
+/- 6 micron at an average yield of 10 detected photons per minimal ionizig

Cancer prevalence in Central Europe: the EUROPREVAL Study
Background: Information on cancer prevalence is either absent or largely unavailable for central European countries. Materials and methods: Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland cover a population of 13 million inhabitants. Cancer registries in these countries supplied incidence and survival data for 465 000 cases of cancer. The prevalence of stomach, colon, rectum, lung, breast, cervix uteri, corpus uteri and prostate cancer, as well as skin melanoma, Hodgkin's disease, leukaemia and all malignant neoplasms combined was estimated for the end of 1992. Results: A large heterogeneity was observed within central European countries. For all cancers combined, estimates ranged from 730 per 100 000 in Poland (men) to 3350 per 100 000 in Germany (women). Overall cancer prevalence was the highest in Germany and Switzerland, and the lowest in Poland and Slovenia. In Slovakia, prevalence was higher than average for men and lower than average for women. This was observed for almost all ages. As shown by incidence data, breast cancer was the most frequent malignancy among women in all countries. Among men, prostate cancer was the leading malignancy in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and lung cancer was the major cancer in Slovenia, Slovakia and Poland. The Netherlands had a high prevalence of both prostate and lung cancer. Time-related magnitude of prevalence within each country and the variability of such proportions across the countries has been estimated and cancer prevalence is given by time since diagnosis (1 year, 1-5 years, 5-10 years, >10 years) for each site. The weight of 1-year prevalence (248 per 100 000 among men and 253 per 100 000 among women) was 10 years before), reflecting long-term survival, and number of people considered as cured from cancer were 490 per 100 000 for men and 1028 per 100 000 for women, with a range between 26% (The Netherlands, men) and 50% (Slovakia, women). Conclusion: It is clear from observing countries in Central Europe, that high cancer prevalence is associated with well-developed economies. This burden of cancer could be interpreted as a paradoxical effect of better treatments and thereby survival. It could also be taken as a sign for not being satisfied with the advances in treating patients diagnosed with cancer, and for supporting more primary preventio
Experimental Induction of Odontoblast Differentiation and Stimulation During Preparative Processes
In vivo implantation experiments have shown that ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid(EDTA)-soluble frac tions of dentin stimulate reparative dentinogenesis . When isolated embryonic dental papillae were cultured in the presence of these dentin constituents, odontoblast cytological and functional differentiation could be initiated and maintained in the absence of an enamel organ. These effects were attributed to the presence of TGF-/1- related molecules [TGF-/11 or bone morphogenetic protein -2a (BMP-2a)] which had to be used in combination with an EDT A-soluble fraction of dentin in order to specifically affect competent preodontoblasts . These EDT A-soluble constituents present in dentin could be replaced by heparin or fibronectin which both have been reported to interact with TGF-/1. The association of such defined matrix components with a TGF-/1-related molecule represents a biologically active complex triggering odontoblast functional differentiation.
In response to caries, odontoblasts modulate their secretory activity and are stimulated to elaborate reactionary dentin. This might be induced by active molecules such as IGF, TGF-6 or BMP which are liberated from dentin consecutively to the demineralization process.
Reparative dentinogenesis is distinct from reactionary dentinogenesis and more complex since it implicates the differentiation of precursor cells present in the dental papilla. The developmental history of these cells is different from that of the physiological predontoblasts in developing teeth. The nature of these stem cells and the mechanism of their induction still remain open questions
Performance of the AMS-02 Transition Radiation Detector
For cosmic particle spectroscopy on the International Space Station the AMS
experiment will be equipped with a Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) to
improve particle identification. The TRD has 20 layers of fleece radiator with
Xe/CO2 proportional mode straw tube chambers. They are supported in a conically
shaped octagon structure made of CFC-Al-honeycomb. For low power consumption VA
analog multiplexers are used as front-end readout. A 20 layer prototype built
from final design components has achieved proton rejections from 100 to 2000 at
90% electron efficiency for proton beam energies up to 250 GeV with cluster

Deficiency in Perlecan/HSPG2 During Bone Development Enhances Osteogenesis and Decreases Quality of Adult Bone in Mice
Perlecan/HSPG2 (Pln) is a large heparan sulfate proteoglycan abundant in the extracellular matrix of cartilage and the lacunocanalicular space of adult bones. Although Pln function during cartilage development is critical, evidenced by deficiency disorders including Schwartz–Jampel Syndrome and dyssegmental dysplasia Silverman-Handmaker type, little is known about its function in development of bone shape and quality. The purpose of this study was to understand the contribution of Pln to bone geometric and mechanical properties. We used hypomorph mutant mice that secrete negligible amount of Pln into skeletal tissues and analyzed their adult bone properties using micro-computed tomography and three-point-bending tests. Bone shortening and widening in Pln mutants was observed and could be attributed to loss of growth plate organization and accelerated osteogenesis that was reflected by elevated cortical thickness at older ages. This effect was more pronounced in Pln mutant females, indicating a sex-specific effect of Pln deficiency on bone geometry. Additionally, mutant females, and to a lesser extent mutant males, increased their elastic modulus and bone mineral densities to counteract changes in bone shape, but at the expense of increased brittleness. In summary, Pln deficiency alters cartilage matrix patterning and, as we now show, coordinately influences bone formation and calcification
Reynolds-number Dependence of Streamwise Velocity Fluctuations in Turbulent Pipe Flow
Statistics of the streamwise velocity component in fully-developed pipe flow are examined for Reynolds numbers in the range 5.5 x 10^4 < Re_D < 5.7 x 10^6. The second moment exhibits two maxima: one in the viscous sublayer is Reynolds-number dependent while the other, near the lower edge of the log region, is also Reynolds-number dependent and follows roughly the peak in Reynolds shear stress. The behaviour of both peaks is consistent with the concept of inactive motion which increases with increasing Reynolds number and decreasing distance from the wall. No simple scaling is apparent, and in particular, so-called "mixed" scaling is no better than wall scaling in the viscous sublayer and is actually worse than wall scaling in the outer region. The second moment is compared with empirical and theoretical scaling laws
and some anomalies are apparent. The scaling of spectra using y, R and u_τ is examined. It appears that even at the highest Reynolds number, they exhibit
incomplete similarity only: while spectra do collapse with either inner or outer scales for limited ranges of wave number, these ranges do not overlap. Thus similarity may not be described as complete and any apparent k_1^(-1) range does not attract any special significance and does not involve universal constants. It is suggested that this is because of the influence of inactive motion. Spectra also show the presence of very long structures close to the wall
Stromal Hedgehog signalling is downregulated in colon cancer and its restoration restrains tumour growth
A role for Hedgehog (Hh) signalling in the development of colorectal cancer
(CRC) has been proposed. In CRC and other solid tumours, Hh ligands are
upregulated; however, a specific Hh antagonist provided no benefit in a
clinical trial. Here we use Hh reporter mice to show that downstream Hh
activity is unexpectedly diminished in a mouse model of colitis-associated
colon cancer, and that downstream Hh signalling is restricted to the stroma.
Functionally, stroma-specific Hh activation in mice markedly reduces the
tumour load and blocks progression of advanced neoplasms, partly via the
modulation of BMP signalling and restriction of the colonic stem cell
signature. By contrast, attenuated Hh signalling accelerates colonic
tumourigenesis. In human CRC, downstream Hh activity is similarly reduced and
canonical Hh signalling remains predominantly paracrine. Our results suggest
that diminished downstream Hh signalling enhances CRC development, and that
stromal Hh activation can act as a colonic tumour suppressor
Second malignancies among survivors of germ‐cell testicular cancer: A pooled analysis between 13 cancer registries
AbstractWe investigated the risk of second malignancies among 29,511 survivors of germ‐cell testicular cancer recorded in 13 cancer registries. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were estimated comparing the observed numbers of second malignancies with the expected numbers obtained from sex‐, age‐, period‐ and population‐specific incidence rates. Seminomas and nonseminomas, the 2 main histological groups of testicular cancer, were analyzed separately. During a median follow‐up period of 8.3 years (0–35 years), we observed 1,811 second tumors, with a corresponding SIR of 1.65 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.57–1.73). Statistically significant increased risks were found for fifteen cancer types, including SIRs of 2.0 or higher for cancers of the stomach, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, bladder, kidney, thyroid, and for soft‐tissue sarcoma, nonmelanoma skin cancer and myeloid leukemia. The SIR for myeloid leukemia was 2.39 (95% CI: 1.41–3.77) after seminomas, and 6.77 (95% CI: 4.14–10.5) after nonseminomas. It increased to 37.9 (95% CI: 18.9–67.8; based on 11 observed cases of leukemia) among nonseminoma patients diagnosed since 1990. SIRs for most solid cancers increased with follow‐up duration, whereas they did not change with year of testicular cancer diagnosis. Among subjects diagnosed before 1980, 20 year survivors of seminoma had a cumulative risk of solid cancer of 9.6% (95% CI: 8.7–10.5%) vs. 6.5% expected, whereas 20 years survivors of nonseminoma had a risk of 5.0% (95% CI: 4.2–6.0%) vs. 3.1% expected. In conclusion, survivors of testicular cancers have an increased risk of several second primaries, where the effect of the treatment seems to play a major role. © 2006 Wiley‐Liss, Inc
