An estimate of the chemical composition of Titan's lakes
Hundreds of radar-dark patches interpreted as lakes have been discovered in
the north and south polar regions of Titan. We have estimated the composition
of these lakes by using the direct abundance measurements from the Gas
Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) aboard the Huygens probe and recent
photochemical models based on the vertical temperature profile derived by the
Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument (HASI). Thermodynamic equilibrium is
assumed between the atmosphere and the lakes, which are also considered as
nonideal solutions. We find that the main constituents of the lakes are ethane
(C2H6) (~76-79%), propane (C3H8) (~7-8%), methane (CH4) (~5-10%), hydrogen
cyanide (HCN) (~2-3%), butene (C4H8) (~1%), butane (C4H10) (~1%) and acetylene
(C2H2) (~1%). The calculated composition of lakes is then substantially
different from what has been expected from models elaborated prior to the
exploration of Titan by the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted in ApJ
Voltage controlled terahertz transmission through GaN quantum wells
We report measurements of radiation transmission in the 0.220--0.325 THz
frequency domain through GaN quantum wells grown on sapphire substrates at room
and low temperatures. A significant enhancement of the transmitted beam
intensity with the applied voltage on the devices under test is found. For a
deeper understanding of the physical phenomena involved, these results are
compared with a phenomenological theory of light transmission under electric
bias relating the transmission enhancement to changes in the differential
mobility of the two-dimensional electron gas
Aseptic meningoencephalitis mimicking transient ischaemic attacks
Purpose: To highlight meningoencephalitis as a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) mimic and suggest clinical clues for differential diagnosis. Methods: This was an observational study of consecutively admitted patients over a 9.75-year period presenting as TIAs at a stroke unit. Results: A total of 790 patients with TIAs and seven with TIA-like symptoms but a final diagnosis of viral meningoencephalitis were recognised. The most frequent presentations of meningoencephalitis patients were acute sensory hemisyndrome (6) and cognitive deficits (5). Signs of meningeal irritation were minor or absent on presentation. Predominantly lymphocytic pleocytosis, hyperproteinorachia and a normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)/serum glucose index (in 5 out of 6 documented patients) were present. Meningeal thickening on a brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was the only abnormal imaging finding. Six patients received initial vascular treatment; one thrombolysed. Finally, six patients were treated with antivirals and/or antibiotics. Although neither bacterial nor viral agents were identified on extensive testing, viral meningoencephalitis was the best explanation for all clinical and laboratory findings. Conclusions: Aseptic meningoencephalitis should be part of the differential diagnosis in patients presenting as TIA. The threshold for a lumbar puncture in such patients should be set individually and take into account the presence of mild meningeal symptoms, age and other risk factors for vascular disease, the results of brain imaging and the basic diagnostic work-up for a stroke sourc
Early SPI/INTEGRAL contraints on the morphology of the 511 keV line emission in the 4th galactic quadrant
We provide first constraints on the morphology of the 511 keV line emission
from the galactic centre region on basis of data taken with the spectrometer
SPI on the INTEGRAL gamma-ray observatory. The data suggest an azimuthally
symmetric galactic bulge component with FWHM of ~9 deg with a 2 sigma
uncertainty range covering 6-18 deg. The 511 keV line flux in the bulge
component amounts to (9.9+4.7-2.1) 10e-4 ph cm-2 s-1. No evidence for a
galactic disk component has been found so far; upper 2 sigma flux limits in the
range (1.4-3.4) 10e-3 ph cm-2 s-1 have been obtained that depend on the assumed
disk morphology. These limits correspond to lower limits on the bulge-to-disk

Self-similarity and power-like tails in nonconservative kinetic models
In this paper, we discuss the large--time behavior of solution of a simple
kinetic model of Boltzmann--Maxwell type, such that the temperature is time
decreasing and/or time increasing. We show that, under the combined effects of
the nonlinearity and of the time--monotonicity of the temperature, the kinetic
model has non trivial quasi-stationary states with power law tails. In order to
do this we consider a suitable asymptotic limit of the model yielding a
Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution. The same idea is applied to
investigate the large-time behavior of an elementary kinetic model of economy
involving both exchanges between agents and increasing and/or decreasing of the
mean wealth. In this last case, the large-time behavior of the solution shows a
Pareto power law tail. Numerical results confirm the previous analysis
The Microchannel X-ray Telescope on Board the SVOM Satellite
We present the Micro-channel X-ray Telescope (MXT), a new narrow-field (about
1{\deg}) telescope that will be flying on the Sino-French SVOM mission
dedicated to Gamma-Ray Burst science, scheduled for launch in 2021. MXT is
based on square micro pore optics (MPOs), coupled with a low noise CCD. The
optics are based on a "Lobster Eye" design, while the CCD is a focal plane
detector similar to the type developed for the seven eROSITA telescopes. MXT is
a compact and light (<35 kg) telescope with a 1 m focal length, and it will
provide an effective area of about 45 cmsq on axis at 1 keV. The MXT PSF is
expected to be better than 4.2 arc min (FWHM) ensuring a localization accuracy
of the afterglows of the SVOM GRBs to better than 1 arc min (90\% c.l. with no
systematics) provided MXT data are collected within 5 minutes after the
trigger. The MXT sensitivity will be adequate to detect the afterglows for
almost all the SVOM GRBs as well as to perform observations of non-GRB
astrophysical objects. These performances are fully adapted to the SVOM science
goals, and prove that small and light telescopes can be used for future small

The role of the genetic counsellor: a systematic review of research evidence
In Europe, genetic counsellors are employed in specialist genetic centres or other specialist units. According to the European Board of Medical Genetics, the genetic counsellor must fulfil a range of roles, including provision of information and facilitation of psychosocial adjustment of the client to their genetic status and situation. To evaluate the extent to which genetic counsellors fulfil their prescribed roles, we conducted a systematic review of the published relevant scientific evidence. We searched five relevant electronic databases (Medline, CINAHL, SocIndex, AMED and PsychInfo) using relevant search terms and handsearched four subject-specific journals for research-based papers published in English between 1 January 2000 and 30 June 2013. Of 419 potential papers identified initially, seven satisfied the inclusion criteria for the review. Themes derived from the thematic analysis of the data were: (i) rationale for genetic counsellors to provide care, (ii) appropriate roles and responsibilities and (iii) the types of conditions included in the genetic counsellor caseload. The findings of this systematic review indicate that where genetic counsellors are utilised in specialist genetic settings, they undertake a significant workload associated with direct patient care and this appears to be acceptable to patients. With the burden on genetic services, there is an argument for the increased use of genetic counsellors in countries where they are under-utilised. In addition, roles undertaken by genetic counsellors in specialist genetic settings could be adapted to integrate genetic counsellors into multi-disciplinary teams in other specialisms
Mesoscopic modelling of financial markets
We derive a mesoscopic description of the behavior of a simple financial
market where the agents can create their own portfolio between two investment
alternatives: a stock and a bond. The model is derived starting from the
Levy-Levy-Solomon microscopic model (Econ. Lett., 45, (1994), 103--111) using
the methods of kinetic theory and consists of a linear Boltzmann equation for
the wealth distribution of the agents coupled with an equation for the price of
the stock. From this model, under a suitable scaling, we derive a Fokker-Planck
equation and show that the equation admits a self-similar lognormal behavior.
Several numerical examples are also reported to validate our analysis
Advances in the Engineering of Near Infrared Emitting Liquid Crystals and Copolymers, Extended Porous Frameworks, Theranostic Tools and Molecular Junctions Using Tailored Re6 Cluster Building Blocks
International audienceAt the occasion of the fiftieth birthday of the introduction of the term 'metal atom cluster' by F. A. Cotton in inorganic chemistry, it is the good time to make a review on the advances in the engineering of molecular assemblies and nanomaterials based on octahedral Re6 metal atom clusters. The latter exhibit unique intrinsic structural and physicochemical properties (orthogonal disposition of metallic sites that can be selectively functionalized, photoluminescence, redox, generation of singlet oxygen) that make them relevant building blocks for the structuration at the nanometric scale and functionalization of hybrid organic-inorganic materials and supramolecular frameworks. After synthesis by solid state chemistry techniques at high temperature, inorganic precursors built up on face-capped [(Re6Yi8)Ya6] cluster units (Y = chalcogen and/or halogen) can be functionalized via solution chemistry techniques or organic melts to form [(Re6Yi8)La6] (L = CN, OH, various organic ligands...). This work reports advances in the synthesis of [(Re6Yi8)Ya6] and [(Re6Yi8)La6] cluster units as well as on their use in the elaboration of supramolecular frameworks, nanoparticles, hybrid nanomaterials (co-polymers and liquid crystals) and active molecular junctions
