Near-Field Directionality Beyond the Dipole Approximation: Electric Quadrupole and Higher-Order Multipole Angular Spectra
Within the context of spin-related optical phenomena, the near-field
directionality is generally understood from the quantum spin Hall effect of
light, according to which the transverse spin of surface or guided modes is
locked to the propagation direction. So far, most previous works have been
focused on the spin properties of circularly polarized dipolar sources.
However, in near-field optics, higher-order multipole sources (e.g.,
quadrupole, octupole, and so on) might become relevant, so a more in-depth
formulation would be highly valuable. Building on the angular spectrum
representation, we provide a general, analytical, and ready-to-use treatment in
order to address the near-field directionality of any multipole field,
particularizing to the electric quadrupole case. Besides underpinning and
upgrading the current framework on spin-dependent directionality, our results
may open up new perspectives for engineering light-matter coupling at the
nanoscale.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Supplemental Material (19 pages). Supplemental

Pressure Drops and Energy Consumption Model of Low-Scale Closed Circuit Cooling Towers
Heat transfer models of closed-circuit cooling towers are available in the literature. Using these models, traditional parametric studies show how the inlet conditions of the streams influence the cooling capacity. This type of analysis could yield to suboptimal operation of the cooling tower since optimal heat and mass transfer processes do not necessarily imply an energy efficient cooling device. The optimal design of closed-circuit cooling towers should include any evaluation of pressure loses associated with the three streams involved. Air-water biphasic pressure drop across tube bundles in such devices was not sufficiently investigated in literature. The proposed literature correlations depend on geometry parameters, and these parameters are not known. In this work, an experimental device has been designed and constructed to study pressure drops, and an energy consumption model has been developed. The pressure drop was successfully calculated modifying a general correlation proposed for two phase flow across tube bundles. The energy model results show that the optimum was obtained where the intube water Reynolds number is near the transition region, and at air velocities near 1 m/s
Distinct nonequilibrium plasma chemistry of C2 affecting the synthesis of nanodiamond thin films from C2H2 (1%)/H2/Ar-rich plasmas
6 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables. We show that the concentrations of the species C2 (X 1Σg+), C2 (a 3Πu), and C2H exhibit a significant increase when the argon content grows up to 95% in medium pressure (0.75 Torr) radio frequency (rf) (13.56 MHz) produced C2H2 (1%)/H2/Ar plasmas of interest for the synthesis of nanodiamond thin films within plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition devices. In contrast, the concentrations of CH3 and C2H2 remain practically constant. The latter results have been obtained with an improved quasianalytic space–time-averaged kinetic model that, in addition, has allowed us to identify and quantify the relative importance of the different underlying mechanisms driving the nonequilibrium plasma chemistry of C2. The results presented here are in agreement with recent experimental results from rf CH4/H2/Ar-rich plasmas and suggest that the growth of nanodiamond thin films from hydrocarbon/Ar-rich plasmas is very sensitive to the contribution of C2 and C2H species from the plasma. This work was partially funded by CICYT (Spain) under

Growth Versus No-growth: The Contractive Evolution of R&D Policies in Spain and Andalusia
The current economic crisis and the building-based economy collapse make the innovation approach and the change to knowledge-based economy fundamental to trace the future growth and development. This paper revises the R&D policy in Spain and Andalusia in the last 10 years with the evolution of the main indicators during the period 2001-2011
Robust symmetric multiplication for programmable analog VLSI array processing
This paper presents an electrically programmable analog multiplier. The circuit performs the multiplication between an input variable and an electrically selectable scaling factor. The multiplier is divided in several blocks: a linearized transconductor, binary weighted current mirrors and a differential to single-ended current adder. This paper shows the advantages introduced using a linearized OTA-based multiplier. The circuit presented renders higher linearity and symmetry in the output current than a previously reported single-transistor multiplier. Its inclusion in an array processor based on CNN allows for a more accurate implementation of the processing model and a more robust weight distribution scheme than those found in previous designs.Office of Naval Research (USA) N-00014- 02-1-0884Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC2003-09817-C02-0
Chemical and thermal impacts of sprite streamers in the Earth's mesosphere
A one-dimensional self-consistent model has been developed to study the chemical and thermal effects of a single sprite streamer in the Earth's mesosphere. We have used sprite streamer profiles with three different driving current durations (5 ms, 50 ms, and 100 ms) between 50 and 80 km of altitude and considering a kinetic scheme of air with more than 90 chemical species. Our model predicts strong increases in practically all the concentrations of the species studied at the moment of the streamer head passage. Moreover, their densities remain high during the streamer afterglow phase. The concentration of electrons can reach values of up to 10 cm in the three cases analyzed. The model also predicts an important enhancement, of several orders of magnitude above ambient values, of nitrogen oxides and several metastables species. On the other hand, we found that the 4.26 μm IR emission brightness of CO can reach 10 GR at low altitudes (< 65 km) for the cases of intermediate (50 ms) and long (100 ms) driving currents. These results suggest the possibility of detecting sprite IR emissions from space with the appropriate instrumentation. Finally, we found that the thermal impact of sprites in the Earth's mesosphere is proportional to the driving current duration. This produces variations of more than 40 K (in the extreme case of a 100 ms driving current) at low altitudes (< 55 km) and at about 10 s after the streamer head. Key Points Chemical and thermal impacts of sprites in the mesosphere are calculated The calculated concentration of electrons exhibits a significant enhancement The model predicts an increase in the gas temperature at low altitudes.©2016. A Focal-Plane Image Processor for Low Power Adaptive Capture and Analysis of the Visual Stimulus
Portable applications of artificial vision are limited by the fact that conventional processing schemes fail to meet the specifications under a tight power budget. A bio-inspired approach, based in the goal-directed organization of sensory organs found in nature, has been employed to implement a focal-plane image processor for low power vision applications. The prototype contains a multi-layered CNN structure concurrent with 32times32 photosensors with locally programmable integration time for adaptive image capture with on-chip local and global adaptation mechanisms. A more robust and linear multiplier block has been employed to reduce irregular analog wave propagation ought to asymmetric synapses. The predicted computing power per power consumption, 142MOPS/mW, is orders of magnitude above what rendered by conventional architectures
