Working with the first prototype version of the Prince _-prolog definiteness analysis tools

    No full text
Constraint Logic Programming (CLP) aims at providing more powerful and flexible programs than can be obtained in 'traditional' Logic Programming. However, situations may arise where there is a tradeoff in terms of runtime efficiency at which these programs can be executed. 'Definiteness Analysis', based on Bruynooghe's abstract interpretation framework, targets at achieving faster CLP programs. The present work summarizes work performed during a visiting scientiest exchange of one of the authors (E.O.) at FAW-Ulm in Summer/Fall 1993. The objective was to test the definiteness analyser prototype developed at UPM as part of the ESPRIT project PRINCE (contract no. 5246) research, based on test examples provided by PRINCE application partners. In addition, a short background and some suggestions for possible future work are given. Heavy ion ignition facility Proposal for a European study group

    No full text
Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) with heavy ion beams has a promising perspective for future energy generation. For the exploration of this concept Europe has a unique potential concerning the technologies involved. In particular, there is an excellent knowledge and experience in RF linear accelerators, storage rings and the handling of intense beam in European laboratories. During the last decade, key issues of ICF in the fields of accelerators, targets and systems have been studied in the framework of national programs. In a recent initiative, concepts of future European activities in this field have been discussed. As a result, it is proposed to combine the existing heavy ion ICF activities into a feasibility study for an Ignition Facility based on heavy ion beams as the next logical step, coordinated under the auspices and with the support of the European Commission. A period of 3 years with 30 scientists, - including personnel contributed by the participating laboratories - is prospected for this study. It shall be concerned with the critical issues of the design of the driver consisting of an RF linac with storage rings, of the targets including the means of their production and of the required reaction chamber, the main task of the study group being to develop a conceptual design and coherent set of parameters of a future Ignition Facility.
