Pomerons and jet events at HERA
We study two and three jet events with a large rapidity gap at HERA. Unlike in the Ingelman-Schlein approach we do not adscribe a structure to the Pomeron. Instead, the coupling of the Pomeron to quarks or gluons is taken pointlike, which makes the model easy to test: the only degrees of freedom are the coupling constants of the Pomeron to the quarks or the gluons and a cutoff procedure to keep the Pomeron-gluon coupling well behaved. The expectations within this model differ substantially from those previously reported in the literature for diffractive e - p scattering, and could be easily tested experimentally. Jet production in charged current deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Jet production in charged-current (CC) deep inelastic e"+p scattering (DIS) provides a testing ground for QCD as well as for the electroweak sector of the standard model (SM). In addition, searches for new physics rely crucially on accurate determinations of event rates and cross sections from SM processes. Up to leading order in the strong coupling constant #alpha#_s, jet production in CC DIS proceeds via the quark-parton model (Wq #-># q), the QCD-Compton (Wq #-># qg) and W-gluon fusion (Wg #-># qq) processes. Differential jet cross sections are sensitive to #alpha#_s and the mass of the propagator M_w, which are fundamental parameters of the SM. The final state jets in CC DIS also have an internal structure, a useful representation of which is the subjet multiplicity. The lowest-order non-trivial contribution to the subjet multiplicity is of order #alpha#_s, so that measurements of the subjet multiplicity provide a test of QCD. Measurements of the CC DIS cross section at HERA, at high virtuality of the exchanged boson, Q"2, demonstrate the presence of a space-like propagator with a finite mass, consistent with that of the W boson. At HERA, multijet structure has been observed in CC DIS at large Q"2 and the jet substructure has been studied using the differential and integrated jet shapes. This manuscript reports a detailed study of the hadronic final state in CC DIS. Differential cross sections for inclusive jet and dijet production are presented. The jets were identified in the laboratory frame using the longitudinally invariant k_T cluster algorithm [Ca93]. Charm electroproduction at HERA
After an introduction to put the analysis in context, chapter 1, the experimental infrastructure is described in chapter 2. The D"* production cross section is measured in a restricted kinematic region as a function of several variables in chapter 3. A comparison of the data with NLO pQCD predictions, which include three light flavours and the gluon as partons in the proton [10], is presented in chapter 4. Also in the same chapter the effects of the fragmentation c#->#D"*"+ are studied. These calculations are used in chapter 5 to extrapolate the data to the full phase space of the D"* meson variables in order to extract F_2"c "a"n"t"i "c. Metacognition and Emotion: the Dynamics of Emotions and Confidence
The present talk offers a metacognitive perspective on emotions by examining how confidence, a secondary or metacognition, can both affect emotions and be influenced by emotions. We present two sets of findings bearing on this notion. The first set of findings examines how emotions are affected by the confidence with which emotional thoughts (i.e., the thoughts leading to the emotion) were generated. The second set of findings examines how emotions can influence persuasion by affecting confidence in one's thoughts. Taken together, we offer a theoretical framework based on metacognition to gain better insight into understanding how emotions affect consumer persuasion and behavior
Values in the education policy of The Netherlands 1990
Survey of value orientations regarding education and education policy of opinion leaders and decision makers in this field in the Netherlands About one hundred statements were presented, covering: educational goals / pedagogic and educational issues / position and role of teachers / educational policy and the national organization of education / financial and management issues / role of government / influence on decisions. Main analytic factors: role of market mechanisms in education, traditional values / opinion regarding teachers / widening the social goals of education. This research is comparative with earlier projects in the United States, Germany and Great Britain, as reported in: Landsberger, H.A., Carlson, J.R and Campbell, R.T. ( 1988 ), Education policy in comparative perspective ( Research papers in education 3, 103-130 ) Background variables: basic characteristics/ occupation/employment/ education/ organizational membershi
NLO predictions for the growth of F_2 at small #chi# and comparison with experimental data
We present parametrizations for the proton structure function F_2 in the next to leading order in perturbative QCD. The calculations show that the dominant term to F_2(x,Q"2) should grow as x"-"#lambda#"_s for small x values, with the exponent #lambda#_S being essentially independent of Q"2. Comparisons with the most recent H1 and ZEUS data confirm the value #lambda#_S#approx#0.35 obtained previously from fits to low energy data.
