Sub 20 nm Short Channel Carbon Nanotube Transistors
Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors with sub 20 nm long channels and
on/off current ratios of > 1000000 are demonstrated. Individual single-walled
carbon nanotubes with diameters ranging from 0.7 nm to 1.1 nm grown from
structured catalytic islands using chemical vapor deposition at 700 degree
Celsius form the channels. Electron beam lithography and a combination of HSQ,
calix[6]arene and PMMA e-beam resists were used to structure the short channels
and source and drain regions. The nanotube transistors display on-currents in
excess of 15 microA for drain-source biases of only 0.4 Volt.Comment: Nano Letters in pres
On the Nature of Intrinsic Absorption in Reddened Seyfert 1 Galaxies
We discuss the origin of the ``dusty lukewarm absorber'', which we previously
identified in the reddened Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC 3227 and Akn 564. This
absorber is characterized by saturated UV absorption lines (C IV, N V) near the
systemic velocity of the host galaxy, and is likely responsible for reddening
both the continuum and the emission lines (including those from the narrow-line
region) from these Seyferts. From a large sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies, we find
that continuum reddening (as measured by UV color) tends to increase with
inclination of the host galaxy. Furthermore, reddened, inclined Seyfert
galaxies observed at moderate to high spectral resolution all show evidence for
dusty lukewarm absorbers. We suggest that these absorbers lie in the plane of
the host galaxy at distances > 100 pc from the nucleus, and are physically
distinct from the majority of intrinsic absorbers that are outflowing from the

Coffee intake one hour prior to phlebotomy produces no clinically significant changes in routine biochemical test results
IntroductionAlthough current guidelines recommend not drinking coffee prior to phlebotomy, our hypothesis is that drinking coffee does not affect the clinical interpretation of biochemical and haematological test results.
Materials and methodsTwenty-seven volunteers were studied in basal state (T0) and 1h after (T1) drinking coffee. Routine haematological (Sysmex-XN1000 analyser) and biochemistry parameters (Vitros 4600 analyser) were studied. Results were compared using the Wilcoxon test (P < 0.05). A clinical change was considered when mean percent difference (MD%) was higher than the reference change value (RCV).
ResultsCoffee intake produced statistically, but not clinically, significant: i) increases in haemoglobin (P = 0.009), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (P = 0.044), neutrophils (P = 0.001), albumin (P = 0.001), total protein (P = 0.000), cholesterol (P = 0.025), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.007), uric acid (P = 0.011), calcium (P = 0.001), potassium (P = 0.010), aspartate aminotransferase (P = 0.001), amylase (P = 0.026), and lactate dehydrogenase (P = 0.001), and ii) decreases in mean cell volume (P = 0.002), red cell distribution width (P = 0.001), eosinophils (P = 0.002), and lymphocytes (P = 0.001), creatinine (P = 0.001), total bilirubin (P = 0.012), phosphorus (P = 0.001), magnesium (P = 0.007), and chloride (P = 0.001).

NICMOS Imaging of Molecular Hydrogen Emission in Seyfert Galaxies
We present NICMOS imaging of broad band and molecular hydrogen emission in
Seyfert galaxies. In 6 of 10 Seyferts we detect resolved or extended emission
in the 1-0 S(1) 2.121 or 1-0 S(3) 1.9570 micron molecular hydrogen lines. We
did not detect emission in the most distant galaxy or in the 2 Seyfert 1
galaxies in our sample because of the luminosity of the nuclear point sources.
In NGC 5643, NGC 2110 and MKN 1066, molecular hydrogen emission is detected in
the extended narrow line region on scales of a few hundred pc from the nucleus.
Emission is coincident with [OIII] and H alpha+[NII] line emission. This
emission is also near dust lanes observed in the visible to near-infrared color
maps suggesting that a multiphase medium exists near the ionization cones and
that the morphology of the line emission is dependent on the density of the
ambient media. The high 1-0 S(1) or S(3) H2 to H alpha flux ratio suggests that
shock excitation of molecular hydrogen (rather than UV fluorescence) is the
dominant excitation process in these extended features. In NGC 2992 and NGC
3227 the molecular hydrogen emission is from 800 and 100 pc diameter `disks'
(respectively) which are not directly associated with [OIII] emission and are
near high levels of extinction (AV > 10). In NGC 4945 the molecular hydrogen
emission appears to be from the edge of a 100 pc superbubble. In these 3
galaxies the molecular gas could be excited by processes associated with local
star formation. We confirm previous spectroscopic studies finding that no
single mechanism is likely to be responsible for the molecular hydrogen
excitation in Seyfert galaxies.Comment: submitted to Ap
Non-clasical Nucleation in Supercooled Nickel
The dynamics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of crystalline nickel from
the super-cooled melt is examined during rapid quenching using molecular
dynamics and a modified embedded atom method potential. The character of the
critical nuclei of the crystallization transition is examined using common
neighbor analysis and visualization. At nucleation the saddle point droplet
consists of randomly stacked planar structures with an in plane triangular
order. These results are consistent with previous theoretical results that
predict that the nucleation process in some metals is non-classical due to the

Physical Conditions in the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 2992
This paper presents long slit spectral maps of the bi-cone shaped extended
narrow line region (ENLR) in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2992. We investigate the
physical properties of the ENLR via emission line diagnostics, and compare the
observations to shock and photoionization models for the excitation mechanism
of the gas. The line ratios vary as a function of position in the ENLR, and the
loci of the observed points on line ratio diagrams are shown to be most
consistent with shock+precursor model grids. We consider the energetics of a
nuclear ionizing source for the ENLR, and perform the q-test in which the rate
of ionizing photons from the nucleus is inferred from measurements of the
density and ionization parameter. The q-test is shown to be invalid in the case
of NGC 2992 because of the limitations of the [S II]6717/6731 density
diagnostic. The excitation of the gas is shown to be broadly consistent with
the kinematics, with higher [N II]6583/H-alpha present in the more dynamically
active region. We also show that the pressure associated with the X-ray
emitting plasma may provide a large fraction of the pressure required to power

Kinetics of Ordering in Fluctuation-Driven First-Order Transitions: Simulations and Dynamical Renormalization
Many systems where interactions compete with each other or with constraints
are well described by a model first introduced by Brazovskii. Such systems
include block copolymers, alloys with modulated phases, Rayleigh-Benard Cells
and type-I superconductors. The hallmark of this model is that the fluctuation
spectrum is isotropic and has a minimum at a nonzero wave vector represented by
the surface of a d-dimensional hyper-sphere. It was shown by Brazovskii that
the fluctuations change the free energy structure from a to a
form with the disordered state metastable for all quench depths.
The transition from the disordered to the periodic, lamellar structure changes
from second order to first order and suggests that the dynamics is governed by
nucleation. Using numerical simulations we have confirmed that the equilibrium
free energy function is indeed of a form. A study of the dynamics,
however, shows that, following a deep quench, the dynamics is described by
unstable growth rather than nucleation. A dynamical calculation, based on a
generalization of the Brazovskii calculations shows that the disordered state

A Search for OH Megamasers at z > 0.1. III. The Complete Survey
We present the final results from the Arecibo Observatory OH megamaser
survey. We discuss in detail the properties of the remaining 18 OH megamasers
detected in the survey, including 3 redetections. We place upper limits on the
OH emission from 85 nondetections and examine the properties of 25 ambiguous
cases for which the presence or absence of OH emission could not be determined.
The complete survey has discovered 50 new OH megamasers (OHMs) in
(ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs) which doubles the sample of known
OHMs and increases the sample at z>0.1 sevenfold. The Arecibo OH megamaser
survey indicates that the OHM fraction in LIRGs is an increasing function of
the far-IR luminosity (L_{FIR}) and far-IR color, reaching a fraction of
roughly one third in the warmest ULIRGs. Significant relationships between OHMs
and their hosts are few, primarily due to a mismatch in size scales of measured
properties and an intrinsic scatter in OHM properties roughly equal to the span
of the dataset. We investigate relationships between OHMs and their hosts with
a variety of statistical tools including survival analysis, partial correlation
coefficients, and a principal component analysis. There is no apparent OH
megamaser ``fundamental plane.'' We compile data on all previously known OHMs
and evaluate the possible mechanisms and relationships responsible for OHM
production in merging systems. The OH-FIR relationship is reexamined using the
doubled OHM sample and found to be significantly flatter than previously
thought: L_{OH} ~ L_{FIR}^{1.2 +/- 0.1}. This near-linear dependence suggests a
mixture of saturated and unsaturated masers, either within individual galaxies
