GaAs-GaAlAs distributed-feedback diode lasers with separate optical and carrier confinement
Remarkable reduction of the threshold current density is achieved in GaAs-GaAlAs distributed-feedback diode lasers by adopting a separate-confinement heterostructure. The diodes are lased successfully at temperatures up to 340 °K under pulsed operation. The lowest threshold current density is 3 kA/cm^2 at 300 °K
Liquid phase epitaxy of GaAlAs on GaAs substrates with fine surface corrugations
Liquid phase epitaxy of GaAlAs was performed on GaAs fine surface corrugations. By optimizing the growth conditions, GaAlAs layers were grown successfully with only minimal meltback
Heavy-light meson in anisotropic lattice QCD
We examine whether the improved quark action on anisotropic lattices
can be used as a framework for the heavy quark, which enables precision
computation of matrix elements of heavy-light mesons. To this end, it is
crucial to verify that a mass independent and nonperturbative tuning of the
parameters is possible. As a first step, we observe the dispersion relation of
heavy-light mesons on a quenched lattice using the action which is
nonperturbatively tuned only for the leading terms. On a lattice with the
spatial cutoff 1.6 GeV and the anisotropy , the
relativity relation holds within 2% accuracy in the quark mass region with the bare anisotropy parameter tuned for the massless quark.
We also apply the action to a calculation of heavy-light decay constants in the
charm quark mass region.Comment: Lattice2002(heavyquark), 3 pages, 2 figure
Charmed hadron physics in quenched anisotropic lattice QCD
We investigate the anisotropic lattice with improved quark action as a
candidate of framework in which we can treat both the heavy and light quark
region in the same manner and systematically reduce the systematic
uncertainties. To examine applicability of anisotropic lattice, we calculate
the charmed meson spectrum and decay constants in quenched approximation. We
find consistent result with most advanced results on isotropic lattices.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, contribution to Fifth KEK Topical Conference -

Full particle simulation of a perpendicular collisionless shock: A shock-rest-frame model
The full kinetic dynamics of a perpendicular collisionless shock is studied
by means of a one-dimensional electromagnetic full particle simulation. The
present simulation domain is taken in the shock rest frame in contrast to the
previous full particle simulations of shocks. Preliminary results show that the
downstream state falls into a unique cyclic reformation state for a given set
of upstream parameters through the self-consistent kinetic processes.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, published in "Earth, Planets and Space" (EPS),

Numerical study of O(a) improved Wilson quark action on anisotropic lattice
The improved Wilson quark action on the anisotropic lattice is
investigated. We carry out numerical simulations in the quenched approximation
at three values of lattice spacing (--2 GeV) with the
anisotropy , where and are
the spatial and the temporal lattice spacings, respectively. The bare
anisotropy in the quark field action is numerically tuned by the
dispersion relation of mesons so that the renormalized fermionic anisotropy
coincides with that of gauge field. This calibration of bare anisotropy is
performed to the level of 1 % statistical accuracy in the quark mass region
below the charm quark mass. The systematic uncertainty in the calibration is
estimated by comparing the results from different types of dispersion
relations, which results in 3 % on our coarsest lattice and tends to vanish in
the continuum limit. In the chiral limit, there is an additional systematic
uncertainty of 1 % from the chiral extrapolation.
Taking the central value from the result of the
calibration, we compute the light hadron spectrum. Our hadron spectrum is
consistent with the result by UKQCD Collaboration on the isotropic lattice. We
also study the response of the hadron spectrum to the change of anisotropic
parameter, . We find that the change
of by 2 % induces a change of 1 % in the spectrum for physical quark
masses. Thus the systematic uncertainty on the anisotropic lattice, as well as
the statistical one, is under control.Comment: 27 pages, 25 eps figures, LaTe
Two cases of variceal haemorrhage during living-donor liver transplantation
Some patients with cirrhosis experience rupture of venous varices before operation, and liver transplantation is a therapy of last resort for these patients. However, we have experienced two cases of intraoperative rupture in whom no abnormalities of the venous varices were seen on endoscopy before operation. One patient with ruptured gastrointestinal varices was treated by direct surgical ligation and the other with ruptured oesophageal gastric varices, spontaneously recovered with a Sengstaken–Blakemore tube. These cases suggest that acute variceal haemorrhage should always be considered as a possibility during living-donor liver transplantation in patients with a history of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Careful observation of the nasogastic tube is important during clamping of the hepatic portal vein
