Online Tensor Methods for Learning Latent Variable Models

    Get PDF
We introduce an online tensor decomposition based approach for two latent variable modeling problems namely, (1) community detection, in which we learn the latent communities that the social actors in social networks belong to, and (2) topic modeling, in which we infer hidden topics of text articles. We consider decomposition of moment tensors using stochastic gradient descent. We conduct optimization of multilinear operations in SGD and avoid directly forming the tensors, to save computational and storage costs. We present optimized algorithm in two platforms. Our GPU-based implementation exploits the parallelism of SIMD architectures to allow for maximum speed-up by a careful optimization of storage and data transfer, whereas our CPU-based implementation uses efficient sparse matrix computations and is suitable for large sparse datasets. For the community detection problem, we demonstrate accuracy and computational efficiency on Facebook, Yelp and DBLP datasets, and for the topic modeling problem, we also demonstrate good performance on the New York Times dataset. We compare our results to the state-of-the-art algorithms such as the variational method, and report a gain of accuracy and a gain of several orders of magnitude in the execution time.Comment: JMLR 201

Man is a communication animal. The convergence of Global System Mobile phone (GSM) communication has shown the readiness of development in the area of telecommunication sector. It is an indispensable part of the contemporary world. The Information and Communication Technologies have brought about rapid technological, transformation in the society. Human Communication is that which the interdependent participants are engaged in information dissemination, reception and processing and exchange of ideas in order to be able to transact with others and adapt to their environment. The use of Information and Communication Technology in GSM has created a lot of possibilities and enhanced means of communication through which people can communicate in the society. Mobile phones have become an integral part of people’s daily life. There are many ways through which people use their mobile phones for various purposes. GSM has ensured speedy communication, among students of tertiary institutions with particular reference to University of Maiduguri.  There are lots of benefits in using the GSM-phone especially among students where Short Message Services (SMS) are used in form of interpersonal communication in different style or languages. This study meant to assess the potential benefits of SMS GSM-phone among students. Keywords: Appraisal, potential, benefit

This paper examines media freedom and its relationship to development in the society. The media is a general term for the Radio and television, books, magazines, billboards, stop road advertising et cetera, this also encompasses the social media - the internet, cable, and mobile technologies.  In other words the media is a vehicle of information that conveys messages and disseminates it to heterogeneous society where information could be used and ideas could be shared among people. Media actually participate fully in development particular the social media which is itself a development. Media is any physical object that communication. Media in development played a greater role that almost every society felt its impact and of course a promoter of development. Section 39(1) of the constitution, Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees press freedom, the constitution offers that “every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.” Section 39(2) of the constitution provides every Nigerians to own, establish and operate any medium for the dissemination of information ideas and opinion. This will help Nigerian society to grow. Development cannot exist in isolation they must be machinery that can foster development, which can be seen in diverse ways, such as infrastructure, roads, banks, organizations, pipe-borne water, electricity, et cetera. The development of satellite is one of the latest technology invented by man in the telecommunication sector. Satellite Communication is a method of communication between terminals to their terrestrial networks. The satellite has it scope of coverage, global, regional, or national. The wider the areas of coverage, the more satellites are involved in a single network system to enable its coverage effectively. The satellite technology varies from its satellite-base and its terrestrial wireless communication that affect design. The heart of satellite communication system is its antenna in a stable orbit above the earth. Satellite technology came in various stages, thus Telstar, Synchronous orbit satellite Comsat, INTELSAT, and Domestic Satellite system. This paper will examine the satellite technology and how it affects our social life. The key operational definition will also be explained

The problems that occurred in the fifth grade students of SD Negeri 05 Piece Small Siak District of Bengkalis is low learning achievement of students in math in the first half. Some of the factors that lead students to master difficult subjects Changing common fraction into a decimal, among others, came and teachers less than the maximum in the use of instructional media other causes originate and students who are still a lot of play in the learning process. This research aims to improve students' mathematics learning outcomes. Results of this study was obtained from observations of the activities of teachers and students during the learning process and student achievement test. This research is a form of action research consisted of two cycles. An increase in activity of teachers and students at each cycle using PAKEM Learning Implementation Model. In the first cycle replicates the average value replications 69.17, while the second cycle of the average value increased by 11:16 points to 80.33 with completeness 30 students (100%), and students who do not complete 0 (0%). From the results of this study concluded that PAKEM Learning Implementation Model (Participatory, Active, Creative, Effective, and Fun) can Improve Learning Outcomes Elementary School Math Class V 05 Small Piece Siak District of Bengkali

Film/Video Industries As Channels Of Communication And Development

Video distribution is causing a great deal of excitement in the television and movie industries. In 18th century, some popular toymakers used their understanding of vision to create an ocular illusion which became illustrious. At first, the toys were simple books, still pictures which could be thumbed through to create the illusion of movement, which became illustrious. Group of 10 companies under Edison, hold the patent to virtually all existing filmmaking and exhibition equipments, used in running the production and distribution of film in the United States of America. The Nigerian Film/Video movie industry (Home Video Industry) popularly known as The Nollywood, is the second largest producer of films after Bollywood in India. Nollywood just like it counterparts in the United States and India has helped to mobilized the citizenry for national development and projected African culture to the rest of the world. Background: This study examined the impact of health education intervention (HEI) on the knowledge and utilization of postnatal care services among women in Edu, Nigeria. Methods: A quasi-experimental research design using pre-test and post-test control group to examine impact of HEI among women. Researchers-developed questionnaire was used for data collection.Intervention: One hundred and twenty women were exposed to ten weeks health education intervention; sixty (n=60) experimental group exposed to postnatal care services lectures and sixty (n=60) control group were exposed to HIV/AIDS prevention lectures. The results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to answer research question and test null hypothesis at 0.05 significant levels. Results: The findings showed an improvement from pre intervention mean scores of 64.26 to post intervention scores of 98.15 for the experimental group against 68.88 post intervention mean score of control group. While, the pre intervention mean score of utilization was 56.67 compared with post intervention mean scores of 92.91 for the experimental group and 61.04 for the control group utilization This showed positive impact of health education intervention on knowledge and willingness of women of childbearing age to utilize postnatal care services in Edu LGA.Conclusion: Study concluded that, health education intervention had positive impact on knowledge and willingness of WCA to utilize postnatal care, and the knowledge gained need to be sustained to improve WCA health seeking behaviour in the communities of Edu LGA.Keywords: Edu local government area; Health education intervention; Knowledge and Utilization; Nigeria; Postnatal care services; Women of childbearing ag

Static and Dynamic Chain Structures in the Mean-Field Theory

We give a brief overview of recent work examining the presence of α\alpha-clusters in light nuclei within the Skyrme-force Hartree-Fock model. Of special significance are investigations into α\alpha-chain structures in carbon isotopes and 16^{16}O. Their stability and possible role in fusion reactions are examined in static and time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations. We find a new type of shape transition in collisions and a centrifugal stabilization of the 4α4\alpha chain state in a limited range of angular momenta. No stabilization is found for the 3α3\alpha chain.Comment: Fusionn 11 Conference, St. Malo, France, 201
