Morphology and photoresponse of crystalline antimony film grown on mica by physical vapor deposition
Antimony is a promising material for the fabrication of photodetectors. This study deals with the growth of a photosensitive thin film by the physical vapor deposition (PVD) of antimony onto mica surface in a furnace tube. The geometry of the grown structures was studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and elemental diffraction analysis. XRD peaks of the antimony film grown on mica mostly matched with JCPDF Card. The formation of rhombohedral crystal structures in the film was further confirmed by SEM micrographs and chemical composition analysis. The Hall measurements revealed good electrical conductivity of the film with bulk carrier concentration of the order of 1022 Ω·cm-3 and mobility of 9.034 cm2/Vs. The grown film was successfully tested for radiation detection. The photoresponse of the film was evaluated using its current-voltage characteristics. These investigations revealed that the photosensitivity of the antimony film was 20 times higher than that of crystalline germanium
Impact of sex and comorbid diabetes on hospitalization outcomes in acute pancreatitis: A large United States population-based study
Backgrounds:
Data on the association between comorbid diabetes mellitus (DM) and acute pancreatitis (AP) remains limited. Utilizing a large, nationwide database, we aimed to examine the impact of comorbid diabetes mellitus on patients admitted for acute pancreatitis.
Methods:
This was a retrospective case-control study of adult patients with AP utilizing the National Inpatient Sample from 2015–2018, using ICD–10 codes. Hospitalization outcomes of patients admitted for AP with comorbid DM were compared to those without comorbid DM at the time of admission. The primary outcome was a mortality difference between the cohorts. Multivariable-adjusted cox proportional hazards model analysis was performed. Data was analyzed as both sex aggregated, and sex segregated.
Results:
940,789 adult patients with AP were included, of which 256,330 (27.3%) had comorbid DM. Comorbid DM was associated with a 31% increased risk of inpatient mortality (aOR: 1.31; p = 0.004), a 53% increased risk of developing sepsis (aOR: 1.53; p = 0.002), increased hospital length of stay (LOS) (4.5 days vs. 3.7 days; p < 0.001), and hospital costs (8486; p < 0.001). Whites admitted for AP with comorbid DM were at a 49% increased risk of mortality as compared to Hispanics (8486; p < 0.0001). Different comorbidities had sex-specific risks; men admitted for AP with comorbid DM were at a 28% increased risk of mortality (aOR: 1.28; p < 0.0001) as compared to women. Men with comorbid DM plus obesity or hypertension were also at increased risk of mortality as compared to women, whereas women with comorbid DM plus renal failure were at greater risk of mortality as compared to men.
Conclusions:
Comorbid DM appears to be a risk factor for adverse hospitalization outcomes in patients admitted for AP with male sex and race as additional risk factors. Future prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings to better risk stratify this patient population
Online medical crowdfunding in the United States: a cross-sectional analysis of gendered cancer campaign outcomes
This cross-sectional analysis examined
online US crowdfunding campaigns from 2010–2018. Campaigns including prostate,
breast, bladder, kidney, cervical, uterine, ovarian, testicular, oral, and
thyroid cancers were included. Multivariable modeling was utilized to examine
predictive factors for successful campaigns. A total of 1830 online cancer
campaigns were included in the final analysis. Breast cancer was estimated to be
the most frequent online campaign type (n = 3682), followed by cervical (n =
492), kidney (n = 475), ovarian (n = 460), and prostate cancers (n = 382). Breast
cancer campaigns generated the most total funding ($15.3 million). In adjusted
models, breast cancers generated significantly more donations per campaign than
any other cancer. There was no difference in the average amount of funds raised
per campaign by most cancer types, except for thyroid (19.4% less than breast,
p < 0.001). Friend-authored campaigns generated more funding than
self- and family-authored. Male cancers are under-represented, and breast cancer
campaigns are disproportionately over-represented in online medical crowdfunding
and generate more donations than many other cancers. Gendered differences in
cancer crowdfunding are likely multifactorial and may be influenced by social
networks and public health campaigns
LEARN: A multi-centre, cross-sectional evaluation of Urology teaching in UK medical schools
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the status of UK undergraduate urology teaching against the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Undergraduate Syllabus for Urology. Secondary objectives included evaluating the type and quantity of teaching provided, the reported performance rate of General Medical Council (GMC)-mandated urological procedures, and the proportion of undergraduates considering urology as a career. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LEARN was a national multicentre cross-sectional study. Year 2 to Year 5 medical students and FY1 doctors were invited to complete a survey between 3rd October and 20th December 2020, retrospectively assessing the urology teaching received to date. Results are reported according to the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys (CHERRIES). RESULTS: 7,063/8,346 (84.6%) responses from all 39 UK medical schools were included; 1,127/7,063 (16.0%) were from Foundation Year (FY) 1 doctors, who reported that the most frequently taught topics in undergraduate training were on urinary tract infection (96.5%), acute kidney injury (95.9%) and haematuria (94.4%). The most infrequently taught topics were male urinary incontinence (59.4%), male infertility (52.4%) and erectile dysfunction (43.8%). Male and female catheterisation on patients as undergraduates was performed by 92.1% and 73.0% of FY1 doctors respectively, and 16.9% had considered a career in urology. Theory based teaching was mainly prevalent in the early years of medical school, with clinical skills teaching, and clinical placements in the later years of medical school. 20.1% of FY1 doctors reported no undergraduate clinical attachment in urology. CONCLUSION: LEARN is the largest ever evaluation of undergraduate urology teaching. In the UK, teaching seemed satisfactory as evaluated by the BAUS undergraduate syllabus. However, many students report having no clinical attachments in Urology and some newly qualified doctors report never having inserted a catheter, which is a GMC mandated requirement. We recommend a greater emphasis on undergraduate clinical exposure to urology and stricter adherence to GMC mandated procedures

Primary synovial osteochondromatosis of the surapatellar pouch of knee. Correlation of imaging features with surgical findings
A 31 years old female presented with swelling and pain above the right knee for three years. On examination, there was a tender swelling over the right knee more pronounced over the suprapatellar region. Plain X-ray, US, CT scan and MRI of the knee were suggestive of Primary synovial osteochondromatosis (PSC) of the suprapatellar pouch. Patient underwent total synovectomy and the diagnosis of synovial osteochondromatosis was confirmed histopathologically. Recognizing the imaging appearances of PSC is important to improve patient management
