    Get PDF
This study focuses on parameter inference in a pulmonary blood cir- culation model for mice. It utilises a fluid dynamics network model that takes selected parameter values and aims to mimic features of the pulmonary haemody- namics under normal physiological and pathological conditions. This is of medical relevance as it allows monitoring of the progression of pulmonary hypertension. Constraint nonlinear optimization is successfully used to learn the parameter values

We provide a discussion of issues related to the center-of-mass motion and cross-channel coupling in applications of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory to heavy-ion collisions. We find that the entrance channel dynamics of a heavy-ion collision as described by TDHF does not seem to be significantly influenced by these effects, whereas the long-time evolution may be less reliable.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

MCMC with Delayed Acceptance using a Surrogate Model with an Application to Cardiovascular Fluid Dynamics

Parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification in physiological modelling is a vital step towards personalised medicine. Current state-of-the-art in this research area performs parameter optimisation, with very limited uncertainty quantification. This paper demonstrates the advantage of novel sampling methods, applied on a complex biological PDE system of the pulmonary circulation. The aim is to find an efficient and accurate method for the inference and uncertainty quantification of unknown parameters, relevant for disease diagnosis (pulmonary hypertension) from limited and noisy blood pressure data. The data likelihood is expensive to evaluate as it requires solving numerically a system of PDEs. Therefore, having a model that best trades off accuracy and computational efficiency is of uppermost importance. In this study, we employ fast Bayesian methods, namely MCMC algorithms coupled with emulation using Gaussian Processes, to achieve a computational speed-up. We compare the Delayed Rejection Adaptive Metropolis algorithm in a History Matching framework to the delayed acceptance Adaptive Metropolis algorithm. The first algorithm draws samples from the approximate posterior distribution, while the latter is guaranteed to generate samples from the exact posterior distribution asymptotically. In this paper we propose and derive the n-steps ahead delayed acceptance Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, which is a generalisation of the classical 1-step ahead delayed acceptance Metropolis-Hastings. We show the superiority of the n-steps ahead algorithm over the 1-step ahead method

Democratic government in the world today rely on electronic voting as the foremost means of providing credible, transparent and fair elections for the electorate. There is a need for developed electronic voting systems to be security enhanced to ensure the authenticity of the developed system. Traditional paper balloting systems suffer from vote tampering, multiple voting and illegal voting by unregistered voters. They are also, susceptible to under aged voting due to the difficulty in authenticating the identity of prospective voters. Manual collation and publication of vote results also leads to slow response times and inaccuracies in published results. This research paper proposes a system to combat the current challenges through the development of a fingerprint biometric authentication system for secure electronic voting machines. It uses a fingerprint biometric sensor, integrated via Python to verify users of the system. The inclusion of biometrics improves the security features of the system. The secure voting system is built using PHP and easy to use Graphical User Interface was designed using HTML and CSS. Users are required to interact with the machine via a 7” touchscreen interface. From the results, it shows that the developed machine has a minimum response time of 0.6 seconds for specific operation, an FAR of 2%, FRR of 10% and overall system accuracy of 94%. The developed machine is able to combat the challenges of authentication of users, thereby guaranteeing the transparency, credibility, integrity and vote authenticity of the elections

The effects of aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyces on haematology and pathological changes in some selected organs during experimental Trypanosoma congolense infection of rats were investigated. Three groups of rats were intraperitoneally infected with T. congolense (Karu stock). One group was administered with the aqueous extract and another given a solution of vitamin C in drinking water; the remaining infected group was left untreated. Data from these groups were compared with those of two groups of healthy rats, one of which was similarly treated with the aqueous extract. The experiment was terminated three weeks, post-infection (pi). The uninfected and infected rats administered the extract consumed the equivalent of 9.94 mg – and 9.61 mg ascorbic acid / 100g / day during the experiment. Consumption of the extract significantly (
