Current Trends in Cataloguing and the Challenges of a Cataloguer in the Digital Age
The paper explains the cho/lenges faced by cmaloguers in this oge of Information explosion and
Information Communication Technology ( ICT) and the attendant innovations and trends that are
required to cope in this ne1v em•ironment. Cmaloguing is 110t just building a catalogue, but about
providing users with timely access to il({ormation rele\'Clnt to their needs. The task of ident(fying
resources collected by libraries, results in rich metadata that can he used for many purposes. It involves
describing resources and showing their relmionships to persons, families, corporate bodies and other
resources, thereby enabling users to navigate through {ibraries to quickly get information they need.
The metadata constructed throughout the life cycle of a resource is especially valuable to many types of
users, from creators of resources to publishers, subscription agents, book vendors, resource
aggregators, system vendors, libraries and other institutions, and end users. The new international
cataloguing code, RDA (resource description and access) is discussed in this paper, with a view to meet
.fundamental user tasks in a way thor produces well-formed, interconnected metadata for the digital

Library Consortia in Nigeria and the Place of ICT
Library Consortia implies the coming together of two or more libraries in a formal agreement to share their resources. The essence is that no library can boast of acquiring all the published literature in the world to render effective and efficient services for their users. Islam (2013) cited Manan (1998) and explained that libraries have been cooperating and collaborating on collection building for many years, he further stressed that the aim of library consortia is to maximize the availability of and access to information and service at a minimum cost, consortia enables the participating libraries to leverage shrinking budget, learn from each others, build better tools together and serve their users better by taking advantage of one another’s collection (Borek, 2006)

building, and the characteristics and skills of a librarian without a building in an e-learning environment.
The chapter empirically looks at the need for an e-librarian in an e-learning environment, the
needed skills for such a librarian, and their challenges. Possible solutions to identify challenges are also
discussed. The survey method was used for the study; the questionnaire was designed and administered
to 138 librarians from Academic libraries in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. 127 questionnaires

ability to learn fast, teach, and evaluate others. It was also discovered that e-librarians are faced with
technical, administrative, financial, and capacity building challenges. Based on these, the authors recommend
that e-librarians should be supported at all levels; they should be ready to develop themselves,
strive at all cost to acquire more knowledge and skills in order to stand the changing nature of their
job. It is also recommended that government agencies that accredit programmes at tertiary institutions
should make sure that any institution that offers e-learning must also have a well organized e-library,
and a well trained e-librarian must man the library. The study concludes that e-library and e-librarian

Nigerian librarians were never interested in the profession before going in to
study the course. Rather they studied librarianship because it was their last
