Extracting the Strange Density from
We present a QCD analysis of the strange and charm contributions to the
neutrino deep inelastic structure function . We show that next-to-leading
order effects, which are relatively important for , play a lesser role in
the case of . The neutrino--antineutrino difference provides a new determination of the strange density, which
exhibits some advantages with respect to other traditional methods.Comment: 12 page
Heavy Quark Initiated Contributions to Deep Inelastic Structure Functions
We present O(alpha_s^1) corrections to deep inelastic scattering amplitudes
on massive quarks obtained within the scheme of Aivazis, Collins, Olness and
Tung (ACOT). After identifying the correct subtraction term the convergence of
these contributions towards the analogous coefficient functions for massless
quarks, obtained within the modified minimal subtraction scheme (MSbar), is
demonstrated. Furthermore, the quantitative relevance of the contributions to
neutral current (NC) and charged current (CC) structure functions is

A New 5 Flavour NLO Analysis and Parametrizations of Parton Distributions of the Real Photon
New, radiatively generated, NLO quark (u,d,s,c,b) and gluon densities in a
real, unpolarized photon are presented. We perform three global fits, based on
the NLO DGLAP evolution equations for Q^2>1 GeV^2, to all the available
structure function F_2^gamma(x,Q^2) data. As in our previous LO analysis we
utilize two theoretical approaches. Two models, denoted as FFNS_{CJK}1 & 2 NLO,
adopt the so-called Fixed Flavour-Number Scheme for calculation of the
heavy-quark contributions to F_2^gamma(x,Q^2), the CJK NLO model applies the
ACOT(chi) scheme. We examine the results of our fits by a comparison with the
LEP data for the Q^2 dependence of the F_2^gamma, averaged over various
x-regions, and the F_2,c^gamma. Grid parametrizations of the parton densities

AsnI: A novel class II restriction endonuclease from Arthrobacter sp., strain N-CM, recognizing 5âČ-AT/TAAT-3âČ
AbstractA new class II restriction endonuclease, AsnI, with a novel sequence specificity was isolated from the Gram-positive eubacterium Arthrobacter species, strain N-CM. AsnI recognizes the unambiguously defined palindromic hexanucleotide consisting of A- and T-residues. The novel enzyme in the presence of Mg2+ cleaves specifically both strands as indicated by the arrows. The staggered cuts generate 5âČ-protruding ends with single-stranded 5âČ-TA-3âČ dinucleotide extensions. The novel enzyme may be a useful tool for cloning experiments by complementation of the few enzymes such as PstI and PvuI cutting only once in the Ampr-gene of plasmids pBR322 and pBR328
D-branes in N=2 Strings
We study various aspects of D-branes in the two families of closed N=2
strings denoted by \alpha and \beta in hep-th/0211147. We consider two types of
N=2 boundary conditions, A-type and B-type. We analyse the D-branes geometry.
We compute open and closed string scattering amplitudes in the presence of the
D-branes and discuss the results. We find that, except the space filling
D-branes, the B-type D-branes decouple from the bulk. The A-type D-branes
exhibit inconsistency. We construct the D-branes effective worldvolume
theories. They are given by a dimensional reduction of self-dual Yang-Mills
theory in four dimensions. We construct the D-branes gravity backgrounds.
Finally, we discuss possible N=2 open/closed string dualities.Comment: 25 pages, Latex2
A New 5-Flavour LO Analysis and Parametrization of Parton Distributions in the Real Photon
New, radiatively generated, LO quark (u,d,s,c,b) and gluon densities in a
real, unpolarized photon are presented. We perform a global 3-parameter fit,
based on LO DGLAP evolution equations, to all available data for the structure
function F2^gamma(x,Q^2). We adopt a new theoretical approach called ACOT(chi),
originally introduced for the proton, to deal with the heavy-quark thresholds.
This defines our basic model (CJKL model), which gives a very good description
of the experimental data on F2^gamma(x,Q^2), for both Q^2 and x dependences.
For comparison we perform a standard fit using the Fixed Flavour-Number Scheme
(FFNS_CJKL model), updated with respect to the previous fits of this type. We
show the superiority of the CJKL fit over the FFNS_CJKL one and other LO fits
to the F2^gamma(x,Q^2) data. The CJKL model gives also the best description of
the LEP data on the Q^2 dependence of the F2^gamma, averaged over various
x-regions, and the F_2,c^gamma, which were not used directly in the fit.
Finally, a simple analytic parametrization of the resulting parton densities

Peripheral heavy ion collisions as a probe of the nuclear gluon distribution
At high energies a quark-gluon plasma is expected to be formed in heavy ion
collisions at RHIC and LHC. The theoretical description of these processes is
directly associated to a complete knowledge of the details of medium effects in
the nuclear gluon distribution. In this paper we analyze the possibility to
constraint the behavior of this distribution considering peripheral heavy ion
collisions. We reanalyze the photoproduction of heavy quarks for the deduction
of the in-medium gluon distribution using three current parameterizations for
this parton distribution. Moreover, we show that the elastic photoproduction of
vector mesons is a potential process to probe the nuclear gluon distribution.Comment: 8 figures, accepted for publication in Physicsl review
The pion structure function and jet production in
Despite its theoretical and practical importance, the pion structure is still
badly constrained, particularly at low and in the sea-quark and gluon
sectors. Recently ZEUS have presented data on dijet photoproduction with a
leading neutron, which is dominated by slightly off-shell pion exchange and can
be used to constrain the pion densities down to . We
compare a recent NLO calculation to the ZEUS data and find that the lower gluon
densities of SMRS seem to be preferred by the data. Theoretical uncertainties,

Solution of the Kwiecinski evolution equations for unintegrated parton distributions using the Mellin transform
The Kwiecinski equations for the QCD evolution of the unintegrated parton
distributions in the transverse-coordinate space (b) are analyzed with the help
of the Mellin-transform method. The equations are solved numerically in the
general case, as well as in a small-b expansion which converges fast for b
Lambda_QCD sufficiently small. We also discuss the asymptotic limit of large bQ
and show that the distributions generated by the evolution decrease with b
according to a power law. Numerical results are presented for the pion
distributions with a simple valence-like initial condition at the low scale,
following from chiral large-N_c quark models. We use two models: the Spectral
Quark Model and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Formal aspects of the equations,
such as the analytic form of the b-dependent anomalous dimensions, their
analytic structure, as well as the limits of unintegrated parton densities at x
-> 0, x -> 1, and at large b, are discussed in detail. The effect of spreading
of the transverse momentum with the increasing scale is confirmed, with
growing asymptotically as Q^2 alpha(Q^2). Approximate formulas for
for each parton species is given, which may be used in practical
