Search for a new Resonance decaying into Top-Antitop at Tevatron
In this report a new search for a narrow-width heavy resonance decaying into
top quark pairs (X -> ttbar) in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV has been
performed using data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
collider. The analysis considers ttbar candidate events in the lepton+jets
channel using a lifetime tag to identify b-jets and the ttbar invariant mass
distribution to search for evidence of resonant production. The analyzed
dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 370 pb^-1.
Since no evidence for a ttbar resonance X is found, upper limits on sigma(X) x
B(X -> ttbar) for different hypothesized resonance masses using a Bayesian
approach are set. Within a topcolor-assisted technicolor model, the existence
of a leptophobic Z' boson with M(Z') < 680 GeV and width Gamma(Z') = 0.012
M(Z') can be excluded at 95% C.L..Comment: Talk given at the "International Europhysics Conference on High

Supersymmetry Without Prejudice at the 7 TeV LHC
We investigate the model independent nature of the Supersymmetry search
strategies at the 7 TeV LHC. To this end, we study the
missing-transverse-energy-based searches developed by the ATLAS Collaboration
that were essentially designed for mSUGRA. We simulate the signals for ~71k
models in the 19-dimensional parameter space of the pMSSM. These models have
been found to satisfy existing experimental and theoretical constraints and
provide insight into general features of the MSSM without reference to a
particular SUSY breaking scenario or any other assumptions at the GUT scale.
Using backgrounds generated by ATLAS, we find that imprecise knowledge of these
estimated backgrounds is a limiting factor in the potential discovery of these
models and that some channels become systematics-limited at larger
luminosities. As this systematic error is varied between 20-100%, roughly half
to 90% of this model sample is observable with significance S>5 for 1 fb^{-1}
of integrated luminosity. We then examine the model characteristics for the
cases which cannot be discovered and find several contributing factors. We find
that a blanket statement that squarks and gluinos are excluded with masses
below a specific value cannot be made. We next explore possible modifications
to the kinematic cuts in these analyses that may improve the pMSSM model
coverage. Lastly, we examine the implications of a null search at the 7 TeV LHC
in terms of the degree of fine-tuning that would be present in this model set
and for sparticle production at the 500 GeV and 1 TeV Linear Collider.Comment: 51 pages, 26 figure
Two-dimensional vortex behavior in highly underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} observed by scanning Hall probe microscopy
We report scanning Hall probe microscopy of highly underdoped superconducting
YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} with T_c ranging from 5 to 15 K which showed distinct flux
bundles with less than one superconducting flux quantum (Phi_0) through the
sample surface. The sub-Phi_0 features occurred more frequently for lower T_c,
were more mobile than conventional vortices, and occurred more readily when the
sample was cooled with an in-plane field component. We show that these features
are consistent with kinked stacks of pancake vortices.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
The relation of steady evaporating drops fed by an influx and freely evaporating drops
We discuss a thin film evolution equation for a wetting evaporating liquid on
a smooth solid substrate. The model is valid for slowly evaporating small
sessile droplets when thermal effects are insignificant, while wettability and
capillarity play a major role. The model is first employed to study steady
evaporating drops that are fed locally through the substrate. An asymptotic
analysis focuses on the precursor film and the transition region towards the
bulk drop and a numerical continuation of steady drops determines their fully
non-linear profiles.
Following this, we study the time evolution of freely evaporating drops
without influx for several initial drop shapes. As a result we find that drops
initially spread if their initial contact angle is larger than the apparent
contact angle of large steady evaporating drops with influx. Otherwise they
recede right from the beginning
Effect of Interband Transitions on the c axis Penetration Depth of Layered Superconductors
The electromagnetic response of a system with two planes per unit cell
involves, in addition to the usual intraband contribution, an added interband
term. These transitions affect the temperature dependence and the magnitude of
the zero temperature c-axis penetration depth. When the interplane hopping is
sufficiently small, the interband transitions dominate the low temperature
behaviour of the penetration depth which then does not reflect the linear
temperature dependence of the intraband term and in comparison becomes quite
flat even for a d-wave gap. It is in this regime that the pseudogap was found
in our previous normal state calculations of the c-axis conductivity, and the
effects are connected.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Microwave Spectroscopy of Thermally Excited Quasiparticles in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.99}
We present here the microwave surface impedance of a high purity crystal of
measured at 5 frequencies between 1 and 75 GHz. This data
set reveals the main features of the conductivity spectrum of the thermally
excited quasiparticles in the superconducting state. Below 20 K there is a
regime of extremely long quasiparticle lifetimes, due to both the collapse of
inelastic scattering below and the very weak impurity scattering in the
high purity -grown crystal used in this study. Above 20 K, the
scattering increases dramatically, initially at least as fast as .Comment: 13 pages with 10 figures. submitted to Phys Rev
Anomalous Behavior Of The Complex Conductivity Of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7 Observed With THz Spectroscopy
We have measured the electrodynamic properties of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7
single crystal thin films as a function of temperature using coherent
THz-time-domain spectroscopy. We obtain directly the complex conductivity
, the London penetration depth , the
plasma frequency , and the quasiparticle scattering rate . We
find that drops exponentially rapidly with below the critical
temperature in {\em all} the superconducting samples, implying that this
behavior is a {\em signature} of high- superconductivity. The plasma
frequency decreases with increasing Pr content, providing evidence that Pr
depletes carriers, leaving the CuO planes {\em underdoped}. Both the
conductivity in the THz region and the dc resistivity yield evidence for the
opening of a spin gap {\em above} .Comment: 9 pages, REVTEX 3.
Suppression of Superconductivity in YBCO/LCMO Superlattices
The competition of superconductivity and magnetism in superlattices composed
of alternating YBaCuO and LaCaMnO thin
films is investigated using low-energy optical spectroscopy. The thickness of
the superconducting YBCO layers is varied from 30 nm to 20 nm while the
thickness of the magnetic LCMO layers is kept constant at 20 nm. We clearly
observe that the superconducting condensate density in the superconducting
state of superlattice is drastically reduced by the magnetic subsystem which
may be connected with proximity effects that distort the gap symmetry and thus
suppress superconductivity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
