A South African review of harmonic emission level assessment as per IEC61000-3-6
Large-scale renewable power producing plants are being integrated into South African networks.
Network operators need to ensure that Renewable Power Plants (RPP) do not negatively affect the
power quality levels of their networks, as harmonics amongst others could become a concern.
IEC 61000-3-6 details a method for allocating voltage harmonic emission limits for distorting loads.
This method works well for the allocation of emission limits; however it does not address the
management of harmonic emissions once a plant is connected to the network. The management of
harmonic emissions requires that network operators measure or quantify the emissions from loads and
generators to determine compliance. Post-connection quantification of harmonic levels and
compliance is a challenge for network operators. The question asked is “How should a network
operator measure/quantify the harmonic emissions of a load/generator to establish compliance with the
calculated limits as per IEC 61000-3-6”.
This paper reviews within a South African context methods of assessing harmonic emission levels and
then evaluates these methods by means of field data. Opportunities for improvement are identified
and operational requirements discussed
Flux profile scanners for scattered high-energy electrons
The paper describes the design and performance of flux integrating Cherenkov
scanners with air-core reflecting light guides used in a high-energy, high-flux
electron scattering experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The
scanners were highly radiation resistant and provided a good signal to
background ratio leading to very good spatial resolution of the scattered
electron flux profile scans.Comment: 22 pages, 17 figure
Open charm production at HERA
Inclusive charm meson production cross sections in the deep inelastic
scattering and photoproduction regimes are compared with QCD leading and
next-to-leading (NLO) calculations. The NLO predictions are significantly below
the data in some parts of the measured kinematic range. Angular distributions
of dijet events with charm show clear evidence for the existence of charm
originating from the incoming photon. The charm fragmentation function is
measured for the first time at HERA. Various fragmentation ratios and the
fragmentation fractions of the low-lying charm hadrons are determined and

Spheres and Prolate and Oblate Ellipsoids from an Analytical Solution of Spontaneous Curvature Fluid Membrane Model
An analytic solution for Helfrich spontaneous curvature membrane model (H.
Naito, M.Okuda and Ou-Yang Zhong-Can, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 48}, 2304 (1993); {\bf
54}, 2816 (1996)), which has a conspicuous feature of representing the circular
biconcave shape, is studied. Results show that the solution in fact describes a
family of shapes, which can be classified as: i) the flat plane (trivial case),
ii) the sphere, iii) the prolate ellipsoid, iv) the capped cylinder, v) the
oblate ellipsoid, vi) the circular biconcave shape, vii) the self-intersecting
inverted circular biconcave shape, and viii) the self-intersecting nodoidlike
cylinder. Among the closed shapes (ii)-(vii), a circular biconcave shape is the
