Magnetic Properties of the low dimensional spin system (VO)PO: ESR and susceptibility
Experimental results on magnetic resonance (ESR) and magnetic susceptibility
are given for single crystalline (VO)PO. The crystal growth
procedure is briefly discussed. The susceptibility is interpreted numerically
using a model with alternating spin chains. We determine =51 K and
=0.2. Furthermore we find a spin gap of meV from our ESR
measurements. Using elastic constants no indication of a phase transition
forcing the dimerization is seen below 300 K.Comment: 7 pages, REVTEX, 7 figure
Acoustic Faraday effect in TbGaO
The transverse acoustic wave propagating along the [100] axis of the cubic
TbGaO (acoustic mode) is doubly degenerate. A magnetic
field applied in the direction of propagation lifts this degeneracy and leads
to the rotation of the polarization vector - the magneto-acoustic Faraday
rotation. Here, we report on the observation and analysis of the
magneto-acoustic Faraday-effect in TbGaO in static and pulsed
magnetic fields. We present also a theoretical model based on magnetoelastic
coupling of 4 electrons to both, acoustic and optical phonons and an
effective coupling between them. This model explains the observed linear
frequency dependence of the Faraday rotation angle

The Beagle 2 microscope
The Beagle 2 microscope provides optical images of the Martian surface at a resolution 5x higher than any other experiment currently planned. By using a novel illumination system it images in three colors and can also detect fluorescent materials
Ultrasound Investigations of Orbital Quadrupolar Ordering in UPd_3
For a high-quality single crystal of UPd_3 we present the relevant elastic
constants and ultrasonic attenuation data. In addition to the magnetic phase
transition at T_2=4.4 +/- 0.1K and the quadrupolar transition at T_1~6.8K, we
find orbital ordering at T_0=7.6 +/- 0.1K concomitant with a symmetry change
from hexagonal to orthorhombic. A striking feature is the splitting of the
phase transition at T_1 into a second-order transition at T_{+1}=6.9 +/- 0.05K
and a first-order transition at T_{-1}=6.7 +/- 0.05K. For the four phase
transitions, the quadrupolar order parameters and the respective symmetry
changes are specified.Comment: 14 pages (RevTex), 3 eps-figures, accepted by PR
Quadrupole Susceptibility and Elastic Softening due to a Vacancy in Silicon Crystal
We investigate the electronic states around a single vacancy in silicon
crystal by using the Green's function approach. The triply degenerate vacancy
states within the band gap are found to be extended over a large distance
from the vacancy site and contribute to the reciprocal
temperature dependence of the quadrupole susceptibility resulting in the
elastic softening at low temperture. The Curie constant of the quadrupole
susceptibility for the trigonal mode () is largely
enhanced as compared to that for the tetragonal mode ().
The obtained results are consistent with the recent ultrasonic experiments in
silicon crystal down to 20 mK. We also calculate the dipole and octupole
susceptibilities and find that the octupole susceptibilities are extremely
enhannced for a specific mode.Comment: 6 pages, with 5 figure
High Magnetic Field ESR in the Haldane Spin Chains NENP and NINO
We present electron spin resonance experiments in the one-dimensional
antiferromagnetic S=1 spin chains NENP and NINO in pulsed magnetic fields up to
50T. The measured field dependence of the quantum energy gap for B||b is
analyzed using the exact diagonalization method and the density matrix
renormalization group method (DMRG). A staggered anisotropy term (-1)^i d(S_i^x
S_i^z + S_i^z S_i^x) was considered for the first time in addition to a
staggered field term (-1)^i S_i^x B_st. We show that the spin dynamics in high
magnetic fields strongly depends on the orthorhombic anisotropy E.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 4 figure
A Closest Point Proposal for MCMC-based Probabilistic Surface Registration
We propose to view non-rigid surface registration as a probabilistic
inference problem. Given a target surface, we estimate the posterior
distribution of surface registrations. We demonstrate how the posterior
distribution can be used to build shape models that generalize better and show
how to visualize the uncertainty in the established correspondence.
Furthermore, in a reconstruction task, we show how to estimate the posterior
distribution of missing data without assuming a fixed point-to-point
correspondence.
We introduce the closest-point proposal for the Metropolis-Hastings
algorithm. Our proposal overcomes the limitation of slow convergence compared
to a random-walk strategy. As the algorithm decouples inference from modeling
the posterior using a propose-and-verify scheme, we show how to choose
different distance measures for the likelihood model.
All presented results are fully reproducible using publicly available data
and our open-source implementation of the registration framework
