    KINEMATICS ANALYSIS OF THE UPPER EXTREMITY DURING THE TWOHANDED BACKHAND DRIVE VOLLEY FOR FEMALE TENNIS PLAYERS

    The purpose of this study was to discuss the motion characteristics of the arms in the two-handed backhand drive volley. Five elite female tennis players participated in this study, their two-handed backhand drive volley strokes were analysed, and all participants are right handed. Motion Analysis System with 10 Eagle Digital inferred high speed cameras at 200Hz were used for this study. The results show a similar elbow and wrist speed strategy in x-axis between two-handed ground stroke and drive volley, our study also found that the rear arm dominates the stroke and mainly provide the topspin that is required for the skill of the drive volley. In order to create better stroke efficiency, the right elbow reached peak velocity first, followed by the right wrist before racket impact with the ball

    BackgroundCartilage-hair hypoplasia (MIM 250250) is an autosomal recessive disease with diverse clinical manifestations. The clinical phenotypes include variable degrees of bone and hair dysplasia, deficient cellular and/or humoral immunity, and a predisposition to malignancy.MethodsWe performed genetic studies of a patient with disproportionate short stature and brittle scalp hair. Genetic studies were also carried out in the patient's parents.ResultsA novel maternal mutation that consisted of a duplication of 14 nucleotides at position −13 of the RNA component of the RNA component of mitochondrial RNA processing endoribonuclease gene (RMRP; g. −26 to −13 dupTACTACTCTGTGAA, promoter region) and a paternal mutation base substitution of C to T at nucleotide + 230 (designated as + 1 in the transcription initiation site) in the coding sequence of RMRP were detected in this patient.ConclusionA novel maternal RMRP mutation was found in a Chinese boy with typical cartilage-hair hypoplasia

    A Local Diagnosis Algorithm for Hypercube-like Networks under the BGM Diagnosis Model

    System diagnosis is process of identifying faulty nodes in a system. An efficient diagnosis is crucial for a multiprocessor system. The BGM diagnosis model is a modification of the PMC diagnosis model, which is a test-based diagnosis. In this paper, we present a specific structure and propose an algorithm for diagnosing a node in a system under the BGM model. We also give a polynomial-time algorithm that a node in a hypercube-like network can be diagnosed correctly in three test rounds under the BGM diagnosis model

    Compressing Transformer-based self-supervised models for speech processing

    Despite the success of Transformers in self- supervised learning with applications to various downstream tasks, the computational cost of training and inference remains a major challenge for applying these models to a wide spectrum of devices. Several isolated attempts have been made to compress Transformers, but the settings and metrics are different across studies. Trade-off at various compression rates are also largely missing in prior work, making it difficult to compare compression techniques. In this work, we aim to provide context for the isolated results, studying several commonly used compression techniques, including weight pruning, head pruning, low-rank approximation, and knowledge distillation. We report trade- off at various compression rate, including wall-clock time, the number of parameters, and the number of multiply-accumulate operations. Our results show that compared to recent approaches, basic compression techniques are strong baselines. We further present several applications of our results, revealing properties of Transformers, such as the significance of diagonal attention heads. In addition, our results lead to a simple combination of compression techniques that improves trade-off over recent approaches. We hope the results would promote more diverse comparisons among model compression techniques and promote the use of model compression as a tool for analyzing models.     Langerhans cell hyperplasia in the tumor stage of mycosis fungoides: a mimic of Langerhans cell histiocytosis

    AbstractMycosis fungoides is a form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). Malignant CD4+ T cells have been found to adopt the T-regulatory (Treg) cell phenotype and function. We present the case of a 66-year-old man diagnosed with mycosis fungoides that was progressing from the plaque to the tumor stage. The histopathological examinations showed that the Langerhans cell (LC) infiltration in the skin lesion of the tumor stage was greater than that in the patch/plaque stage; the tumor stage lesions resembled LC histiocytosis pathologically. The associations among LCs, apoptotic tumor cells, Treg CTCL cells, and relevant cytokines are complex. Treg CTCL cells produce the immunosuppressive cytokines interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor beta, which facilitate continuous recruitment of LCs and maintenance of long-term dendritic cell immaturity, thereby explaining the remarkable LC infiltration in the tumor stage samples from our patient. This phenomenon indicates that LCs accompanied by Treg CTCL cells may play an important synergistic role in the tumor progression. The development of immunotherapy directed against Treg CTCL cells and LCs overproduction and other immunosuppressive cytokines may be a potent useful adjuvant and worthy of further investigation

    A junctionless SONOS nonvolatile memory device constructed with in situ-doped polycrystalline silicon nanowires

    In this paper, a silicon-oxide-nitride-silicon nonvolatile memory constructed on an n+-poly-Si nanowire [NW] structure featuring a junctionless [JL] configuration is presented. The JL structure is fulfilled by employing only one in situ heavily phosphorous-doped poly-Si layer to simultaneously serve as source/drain regions and NW channels, thus greatly simplifying the manufacturing process and alleviating the requirement of precise control of the doping profile. Owing to the higher carrier concentration in the channel, the developed JL NW device exhibits significantly enhanced programming speed and larger memory window than its counterpart with conventional undoped-NW-channel. Moreover, it also displays acceptable erase and data retention properties. Hence, the desirable memory characteristics along with the much simplified fabrication process make the JL NW memory structure a promising candidate for future system-on-panel and three-dimensional ultrahigh density memory applications

    The Chitinolytic Activities of Streptomyces sp. TH-11

    Chitin is an abundant biopolymer composed of units of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine linked by β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. Chitin is the main component of the shells of mollusks, the cell wall of fungi and yeast and of the exoskeleton of crustaceans and insects. The degradation of chitin is catalyzed by chitinases that occur in a wide range of organisms. Among them, the chitinases from microorganisms are extremely important for the degradation and recycling of the carbon and nitrogen trapped in the large amount of insoluble chitin in nature. Streptomyces sp. TH-11 was isolated from the sediment of the Tou-Chien River, Taiwan. The chitinolytic enzyme activities were detected using a rapid in-gel detection method from the cell-free preparation of the culture medium of TH-11. The chitinolytic enzyme activity during prolonged liquid culturing was also analyzed by direct measurement of the chitin consumption. Decomposition of the exoskeleton of shrimps was demonstrated using electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy

    Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome: A Single-institution Experience

    Background:Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a rare disease in adult. SMAS is characterized by acute, or, more commonly, chronic nonspecific symptoms due to duodenal obstruction and severe malnutrition with reduced arterio-mesenteric angle and distance. Surgical treatment may be necessary in most cases with chronic symptoms or when conservative treatment fails in SMAS.Methods:A retrospective chart review was performed on patients who underwent operation for SMAS from January 2008 to August 2020 in Cardinal Tien Hospital. Patients’ clinical presentations, surgical intervention, and outcomes.Results:Data from a total of 14 patients diagnosed with SMAS were analyzed, of which seven were diagnosed with SMAS by abdominal computed tomography and upper gastrointestinal series with water-soluble barium contrast. Six of the confirmed cases underwent surgery, namely, gastric decompression using a nasogastric tube, andcorrection of electrolyte imbalance. The nasoduodenal tube was placed through the obstructed duodenum to provide a high-nutrient fluid supplement. After conservative treatment failure, the patients underwent surgery. Of the six patients, four underwent duodenojejunostomy, one underwent a mini-laparotomy duodenojejunostomy bypass, and the last one underwent Roux-en-Y duodenojejunal bypass with duodenal feeding tube insertion.Conclusion:Patients with SMAS should initially be treated conservative. Surgical intervention should be considered in patients in whom conservative treatments were not effective.Complete resolution of all symptoms may not always be guaranteed after surgical intervention. Laparoscopy is currently widely used. In well-selected patients, minimally invasive or mini-laparotomy duodenojejunostomy is a safe and effective treatment for SMAS. The main advantages of mini-laparotomy duodenojejunostomy over other surgical approaches include half-length surgical incision and a shorter operative time. Duodenojejunostomy is rapidly becoming the standard procedure of this condition, and it has excellent outcomes comparable with those of open surgery
