X-ray absorption study of Ti-activated sodium aluminum hydride
Ti K-edge x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) was used to explore
the Ti valence and coordination in Ti-activated sodium alanate. An empirical
relationship was established between the Ti valence and the Ti K-edge onset
based on a set of standards. This relationship was used to estimate oxidation
states of the titanium catalyst in 2 mol% and 4 mol% Ti-doped NaAlH4. These
results demonstrate that the formal titanium valence is zero in doped sodium
alanate and nearly invariant during hydrogen cycling. A qualitative comparison
of the edge fine structure suggests that the Ti is present on the surface in
the form of amorphous TiAl3.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
Globally Optimized Parameters for a Model of Mitotic Control in Frog Egg Extracts
DNA synthesis and nuclear division in the developing frog egg are controlled by fluctuations in the activity of M-phase promoting factor (MPF). The biochemical mechanism of MPF regulation is most easily studied in cytoplasmic extracts of frog eggs, for which careful experimental studies of the kinetics of phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of MPF and its regulators have been made. In 1998 Marlovits et al. used these data sets to estimate the kinetic rate constants in a mathematical model of the control system originally proposed by Novak and Tyson. In a recent publication, we showed that a gradient-based optimization algorithm finds a locally optimal parameter set quite close to the Marlovits estimates. In this paper, we combine global and local optimization strategies to show that the refined Marlovits parameter set, with one minor but significant modification to the Novak-Tyson equations, is the unique, best-fitting solution to the parameter estimation problem
Pressure effects on charge, spin, and metal-insulator transitions in narrow bandwidth manganite PrCaMnO
Pressure effects on the charge and spin states and the relation between the
ferromagnetic and metallic states were explored on the small bandwidth
manganite PrCaMnO (x = 0.25, 0.3, 0.35). Under pressure,
the charge ordering state is suppressed and a ferromagnetic metallic state is
induced in all three samples. The metal-insulator transition temperature
(T) increases with pressure below a critical point P*, above which
T decreases and the material becomes insulating as at the ambient
pressure. The e electron bandwidth and/or band-filling mediate the
pressure effects on the metal-insulator transition and the magnetic transition.
In the small bandwidth and low doping concentration compound (x = 0.25), the
T and Curie temperature (T) change with pressure in a reverse way
and do not couple under pressure. In the x = 0.3 compound, the relation of
T and T shows a critical behavior: They are coupled in the range
of 0.8-5 GPa and decoupled outside of this range. In the x = 0.35
compound, T and T are coupled in the measured pressure range where
a ferromagnetic state is present
Discovery of a Galaxy Cluster via Weak Lensing
We report the discovery of a cluster of galaxies via its weak gravitational
lensing effect on background galaxies, the first spectroscopically confirmed
cluster to be discovered through its gravitational effects rather than by its
electromagnetic radiation. This fundamentally different selection mechanism
promises to yield mass-selected, rather than baryon or photon-selected, samples
of these important cosmological probes. We have confirmed this cluster with
spectroscopic redshifts of fifteen members at z=0.276, with a velocity
dispersion of 615 km/s. We use the tangential shear as a function of source
photometric redshift to estimate the lens redshift independently and find z_l =
0.30 +- 0.08. The good agreement with the spectroscopy indicates that the
redshift evolution of the mass function may be measurable from the imaging data
alone in shear-selected surveys.Comment: revised version with minor changes, to appear in ApJ
Turbulence near cyclic fold bifurcations in birhythmic media
We show that at the onset of a cyclic fold bifurcation, a birhythmic medium
composed of glycolytic oscillators displays turbulent dynamics. By computing
the largest Lyapunov exponent, the spatial correlation function, and the
average transient lifetime, we classify it as a weak turbulence with transient
nature. Virtual heterogeneities generating unstable fast oscillations are the
mechanism of the transient turbulence. In the presence of wavenumber
instability, unstable oscillations can be reinjected leading to stationary
turbulence. We also find similar turbulence in a cell cycle model. These
findings suggest that weak turbulence may be universal in biochemical
birhythmic media exhibiting cyclic fold bifurcations.Comment: 14 pages 10 figure
