The consequences of feminization in breeding groups of wild fish

A crucial and as yet unanswered question is whether EDCs have adverse impacts on the sustainability of wildlife populations. There is widespread concern that intersex fish are reproductively compromised, with potential population-level consequences. However, to date, only in vitro sperm quality data are available in support of this hypothesis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether wild endocrine-disrupted fish can compete successfully in a realistic breeding scenario.
METHODS: In two competitive breeding experiments using wild roach (Rutilus rutilus), we used DNA microsatellites to assign parentage and thus determine reproductive success of the adults.
RESULTS: In both studies, the majority of intersex fish were able to breed, albeit with varying degrees of success. In the first study, where most intersex fish were only mildly feminized, body length was the only factor correlated with reproductive success. In the second study, which included a higher number of more severely intersex fish, reproductive performance was negatively correlated with severity of intersex. The intersex condition reduced reproductive performance by up to 76% for the most feminized individuals in this study, demonstrating a significant adverse effect of intersex on reproductive performance.
CONCLUSION: Feminization of male fish is likely to be an important determinant of reproductive performance in rivers where there is a high prevalence of moderately to severely feminized males.Funding for this work was derived through the Endocrine Disruption in Catchments project, which was supported by the U.K. Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and the U.K. Environment Agency
Thermodynamic Properties of Generalized Exclusion Statistics
We analytically calculate some thermodynamic quantities of an ideal -on
gas obeying generalized exclusion statistics. We show that the specific heat of
a -on gas () vanishes linearly in any dimension as when
the particle number is conserved and exhibits an interesting dual symmetry that
relates the particle-statistics at to the hole-statistics at at low
temperatures. We derive the complete solution for the cluster coefficients
as a function of Haldane's statistical interaction in
dimensions. We also find that the cluster coefficients and the virial
coefficients are exactly mirror symmetric (=odd) or antisymmetric
(=even) about . In two dimensions, we completely determine the closed
forms about the cluster and the virial coefficients of the generalized
exclusion statistics, which exactly agree with the virial coefficients of an
anyon gas of linear energies. We show that the -on gas with zero chemical
potential shows thermodynamic properties similar to the photon statistics. We

Understanding the Role of Host Hemocytes in a Squid/Vibrio Symbiosis Using Transcriptomics and Proteomics
The symbiosis between the squid, Euprymna scolopes, and the bacterium, Vibrio fischeri, serves as a model for understanding interactions between beneficial bacteria and animal hosts. The establishment and maintenance of the association is highly specific and depends on the selection of V. fischeri and exclusion of non-symbiotic bacteria from the environment. Current evidence suggests that the host’s cellular innate immune system, in the form of macrophage-like hemocytes, helps to mediate host tolerance of V. fischeri. To begin to understand the role of hemocytes in this association, we analyzed these cells by high-throughput 454 transcriptomic and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) proteomic analyses. 454 high-throughput sequencing produced 650, 686 reads totaling 279.9 Mb while LC-MS/MS analyses of circulating hemocytes putatively identified 702 unique proteins. Several receptors involved with the recognition of microbial-associated molecular patterns were identified. Among these was a complete open reading frame to a putative peptidoglycan recognition protein (EsPGRP5) with conserved residues for amidase activity. Assembly of the hemocyte transcriptome showed EsPGRP5 had high coverage, suggesting it is among the 5% most abundant transcripts in circulating hemocytes. Other transcripts and proteins identified included members of the conserved NF-κB signaling pathway, putative members of the complement pathway, the carbohydrate binding protein galectin, and cephalotoxin. Quantitative Real-Time PCR of complement-like genes, cephalotoxin, EsPGRP5, and a nitric oxide synthase showed differential expression in circulating hemocytes from adult squid with colonized light organs compared to those isolated from hosts where the symbionts were removed. These data suggest that the presence of the symbiont influences gene expression of the cellular innate immune system of E. scolopes
Intrusion of Warm Surface Water Beneath the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica
A 6 month temperature record collected below McMurdo Ice Shelf in 2011-2012 shows the temporal and spatial structure of the summertime warm water signal that penetrates beneath the ice shelf. The strength and duration of the warm water intrusion suggest an annual melt rate at Windless Bight of 0.71 m/yr. A Ross Sea numerical model demonstrates a seasonal warm water pathway leading from the west side of the Ross Sea Polynya (RSP) toward McMurdo Sound. The warm water enters McMurdo Sound, subducts beneath the ice shelf and causes accelerated summer melting. Temperature data were recorded using Distributed Temperature Sensing fiber optics, which gives a vertical temperature profile at a 1 m vertical resolution. This study constitutes one of the first successful implementations of this technology in Polar Regions
Mycobacterium bovis: A model pathogen at the interface of livestock, wildlife, and humans
Complex and dynamic interactions involving domestic animals, wildlife, and humans create environments favorable to the emergence of new diseases, or reemergence of diseases in new host species. Today, reservoirs of Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of tuberculosis in animals, and sometimes humans, exist in a range of countries and wild animal populations. Free-ranging populations of white-tailed deer in the US, brushtail possum in New Zealand, badger in the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and wild boar in Spain exemplify established reservoirs of M. bovis. Establishment of these reservoirs is the result of factors such as spillover from livestock, translocation of wildlife, supplemental feeding of wildlife, and wildlife population densities beyond normal habitat carrying capacities. As many countries attempt to eradicate M. bovis from livestock, efforts are impeded by spillback from wildlife reservoirs. It will not be possible to eradicate this important zoonosis from livestock unless transmission between wildlife and domestic animals is halted. Such an endeavor will require a collaborative effort between agricultural, wildlife, environmental, and political interests.Peer Reviewe
Superconducting fluctuations at low temperature
The effect of fluctuations on the transport and thermodynamic properties of
two-dimensional superconductors in a magnetic field is studied at low
temperature. The fluctuation conductivity is calculated in the framework of the
perturbation theory with the help of usual diagram technique. It is shown that
in the dirty case the Aslamazov-Larkin, Maki-Thomson and Density of States
contributions are of the same order. At extremely low temperature, the total
fluctuation correction to the normal conductivity is negative in the dirty
limit and depends on the external magnetic field logarithmically. In the
non-local clean limit, the Aslamazov-Larkin contribution to conductivity is
evaluated with the aid of the Helfand-Werthamer theory. The longitudinal and
Hall conductivities are found. The fluctuating magnetization is calculated in

A Hard X-ray Study of the Normal Star-Forming Galaxy M83 with NuSTAR
We present results from sensitive, multi-epoch NuSTAR observations of the
late-type star-forming galaxy M83 (d=4.6 Mpc), which is the first investigation
to spatially resolve the hard (E>10 keV) X-ray emission of this galaxy. The
nuclear region and ~ 20 off-nuclear point sources, including a previously
discovered ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source, are detected in our NuSTAR
observations. The X-ray hardnesses and luminosities of the majority of the
point sources are consistent with hard X-ray sources resolved in the starburst
galaxy NGC 253. We infer that the hard X-ray emission is most likely dominated
by intermediate accretion state black hole binaries and neutron star low-mass
X-ray binaries (Z-sources). We construct the X-ray binary luminosity function
(XLF) in the NuSTAR band for an extragalactic environment for the first time.
The M83 XLF has a steeper XLF than the X-ray binary XLF in NGC 253, consistent
with previous measurements by Chandra at softer X-ray energies. The NuSTAR
integrated galaxy spectrum of M83 drops quickly above 10 keV, which is also
seen in the starburst galaxies NGC253, NGC 3310 and NGC 3256. The NuSTAR
observations constrain any AGN to be either highly obscured or to have an
extremely low luminosity of 10 erg/s (10-30 keV), implying it
is emitting at a very low Eddington ratio. An X-ray point source consistent
with the location of the nuclear star cluster with an X-ray luminosity of a few
times 10 erg/s may be a low-luminosity AGN but is more consistent with

NeuroPred: a tool to predict cleavage sites in neuropeptide precursors and provide the masses of the resulting peptides
NeuroPred is a web application designed to predict cleavage sites at basic amino acid locations in neuropeptide precursor sequences. The user can study one amino acid sequence or multiple sequences simultaneously, selecting from several prediction models and optional, user-defined functions. Logistic regression models are trained on experimentally verified or published cleavage data from mollusks, mammals and insects, and amino acid motifs reported to be associated with cleavage. Confidence interval limits of the probabilities of cleavage indicate the precision of the predictions; these predictions are transformed into cleavage or non-cleavage events according to user-defined thresholds. In addition to the precursor sequence, NeuroPred accepts user-specified cleavage information, providing model accuracy statistics based on observed and predicted cleavages. Neuropred also computes the mass of the predicted peptides, including user-selectable post-translational modifications. The resulting mass list aids the discovery and confirmation of new neuropeptides using mass spectrometry techniques. Parasites (Trematoda, Nematoda, Phthiraptera) of Two Arkansas Raptors (Accipitriformes: Accipitridae; Strigiformes: Strigidae)
Very little is known about the helminth parasites of hawks and owls of Arkansas. We had the opportunity to salvage 2 road-killed raptors, a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) and a great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) from the state and examine them for ecto- and endoparasites. Found were chewing lice (Degeeriella fulva) and a nematode (Porrocaecum angusticolle) on/in B. lineatus, and 3 digenean trematodes (Echinoparyphium sp., Strigea elegans, Neodiplostomum americanum), and nematode eggs (Capillaria sp.) in B. virginianus. We document 6 new distributional records for these parasites
