Hastings-Levitov aggregation in the small-particle limit
We establish some scaling limits for a model of planar aggregation. The model is described by the composition of a sequence of independent and identically distributed random conformal maps, each corresponding to the addition of one particle. We study the limit of small particle size and rapid aggregation. The process of growing clusters converges, in the sense of Caratheodory, to an inflating disc. A more refined analysis reveals, within the cluster, a tree structure of branching fingers, whose radial component increases deterministically with time. The arguments of any finite sample of fingers, tracked inwards, perform coalescing Brownian motions. The arguments of any finite sample of gaps between the fingers, tracked outwards, also perform coalescing Brownian motions. These properties are closely related to the evolution of harmonic measure on the boundary of the cluster, which is shown to converge to the Brownian web
Finite-temperature scalar fields and the cosmological constant in an Einstein universe
We study the back reaction effect of massless minimally coupled scalar field
at finite temperatures in the background of Einstein universe. Substituting for
the vacuum expectation value of the components of the energy-momentum tensor on
the RHS of the Einstein equation, we deduce a relationship between the radius
of the universe and its temperature. This relationship exhibit a maximum
temperature, below the Planck scale, at which the system changes its behaviour
drastically. The results are compared with the case of a conformally coupled
field. An investigation into the values of the cosmological constant exhibit a
remarkable difference between the conformally coupled case and the minimally
coupled one.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Magnetic fields in the early universe in the string approach to MHD
There is a reformulation of magnetohydrodynamics in which the fundamental
dynamical quantities are the positions and velocities of the lines of magnetic
flux in the plasma, which turn out to obey equations of motion very much like
ideal strings. We use this approach to study the evolution of a primordial
magnetic field generated during the radiation-dominated era in the early
Universe. Causality dictates that the field lines form a tangled random
network, and the string-like equations of motion, plus the assumption of
perfect reconnection, inevitably lead to a self-similar solution for the
magnetic field power spectrum. We present the predicted form of the power
spectrum, and discuss insights gained from the string approximation, in
particular the implications for the existence or not of an inverse cascade.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Dilatonic Interpretation of the Quintessence?
We discuss the possibility that "quintessential effects", recently displayed
by large scale observations, may be consistently described in the context of
the low-energy string effective action, and we suggest a possible approach to
the problem of the cosmic coincidence based on the link between the strength of
the dilaton couplings and the cosmological state of our Universe.Comment: 6 pages, Revtex, four figures included using epsfig. To appear in

The Middle Way: East Asian masters studentsâ perceptions of critical argumentation in U.K. universities.
The paper explores the learning experiences of East Asian masters students in dealing with Western academic norms of critical thinking in classroom debate and assignment writing. The research takes a cultural approach, and employs grounded theory and case study methodology, the aims being for students to explain their perceptions of their personal learning journeys. The data suggest that the majority of students interviewed rejected full academic acculturation into Western norms of argumentation. They instead opted for a âMiddle Wayâ that synergizes the traditional cultural academic values held by many East Asian students with those elements of Western academic norms that are perceived to be aligned with these. This is a relatively new area of research which represents a challenge for British lecturers and students
On the variation of the gauge couplings during inflation
It is shown that the evolution of the (Abelian) gauge coupling during an
inflationary phase of de Sitter type drives the growth of the two-point
function of the magnetic inhomogeneities. After examining the constraints on
the variation of the gauge coupling arising in a standard model of inflationary
and post-inflationary evolution, magnetohydrodynamical equations are
generalized to the case of time evolving gauge coupling. It is argued that
large scale magnetic fields can be copiously generated. Other possible
implications of the model are outlined.Comment: 5 pages in RevTex style, one figur
Gravitational Lensing by Cosmic Strings in the Era of Wide-Field Surveys
Motivated by the recent claim for gravitational lensing by a cosmic string,
we reinvestigate the probability of finding such an event with upcoming
wide-field surveys. If an observed lensing event is suspected to be due to a
string, observations of the vicinity of the event in a circle of diameter L
centered on the observed lens should reveal several additional lensing events.
For a string located nearby (z\lesssim 0.5), we find that observations in a
region of size \approx 1 arcmin^2 will see \sim 100 objects, of which \sim 5
would be lensed by the string, compared to \sim 0.1 lensed by conventional
sources.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be submitted to PRD Rapid
Calculations of binding energies and masses of heavy quarkonia using renormalon cancellation
We use various methods of Borel integration to calculate the binding ground
energies and masses of b-bbar and t-tbar quarkonia. The methods take into
account the leading infrared renormalon structure of the hard+soft part of the
binding energies E(s), and of the corresponding quark pole masses m_q, where
the contributions of these singularities in M(s) = 2 m_q + E(s) cancel.
Beforehand, we carry out the separation of the binding energy into its
hard+soft and ultrasoft parts. The resummation formalisms are applied to
expansions of m_q and E(s) in terms of quantities which do not involve
renormalon ambiguity, such as MSbar quark mass, and alpha_s. The
renormalization scales are different in calculations of m_q, E(s) and E(us).
The MSbar mass of b quark is extracted, and the binding energies of t-tbar and
the peak (resonance) energies for (t+tbar) production are obtained.Comment: 23 pages, 8 double figures, revtex4; the version to appear in
