Color Doppler ultrasonography evaluation of amblyopia
AIM: To assess the hemodynamic changes in the extraocular orbital vessels of amblyopic patients in comparison with non-amblyopic fellow eyes, using color Doppler ultrasonography(CDU).
METHODS: Thirty-six eyes of 18 pediatric patients were included in the study(20 amblyopic, 16 normal). All eyes underwent color Doppler ultrasonography examination of ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery, and posterior ciliary artery.
RESULTS: The only differences between the two groups with regard to color Doppler ultrasonography parameters was the significantly lower peak systolic velocity(32.70±11.60 vs 55.01±11.68, P=0.001)and end-diastolic velocity(6.83±1.91 vs 13.99±4.15, P=0.001)for ophthalmic artery in amblyopic eyes.
CONCLUSION: Our study showed amblyopic eyes may present a decrease in retrobulbar blood flow velocity
Does the type of suturing technique used affect astigmatism after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty in keratoconus patients?
Banu Torun Acar, Ece Turan Vural, Suphi AcarHaydarpasa Numune Education and Research Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinic, Istanbul, TurkeyPurpose: To compare the effect of three different suturing techniques on astigmatism after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) in patients with keratoconus. Methods: In this retrospective study, 54 eyes of 54 patients with advanced keratoconus underwent DALK with three suturing techniques: single running, interrupted running, and combined interrupted and running. Postkeratoplasty astigmatism was evaluated during examinations 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively and 2 months after completing suture removal. Results: Twenty-four eyes had single running sutures, 16 eyes had interrupted sutures, and in 14 eyes the suturing technique used was combined interrupted and running sutures. Mean age was 25.6 ± 5.9 years, 27.3 ± 6.8 years, and 26.5 ± 5.7 years (P = 0.422), and postoperative astigmatism 1 month after surgery was 3.79 ± 1.19 D, 5.56 ± 1.78 D, and 4.21 ± 1.55 D in the three groups, respectively (P = 0.012). However, 2 months after completing the suture removal, final postoperative astigmatism was 3.43 ± 1.44 D, 3.87 ± 1.38 D, and 3.71 ± 1.46 D (P = 0.846). Final astigmatism less than 4 D was seen in 18 cases (75%) in the single running group, nine cases (56.2%) in the interrupted running group, and nine cases (64.2%) in the combined interrupted and running group (P = 0.08).Conclusion: Postkeratoplasty astigmatism is comparable with three different suturing techniques used in patients with keratoconus after completing suture removal in DALK. Due to earlier suture removal in DALK, the type of suturing technique used is not considerably important. Keywords: astigmatism, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, suturing techniqu

ABS TRACT Objective: The present study aimed to compare the Nidek CEM-530 (Nidek Co., Japan), Konan CellChek XL (Konan Medical, Hyogo, Japan), and Topcon SP-3000P (Topcon Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) noncontact specular microscopes (NCSM) in terms of endothelial cell density (ECD), morphological endothelial cell parameters, and central corneal thickness (CCT), in healthy subjects. Material and Methods: Right eyes of 49 patients were included in this study. ECD, CCT, average cell area, coefficient of variation, standard deviation of cell area, cell hexagonality ratio were evaluated with Nidek CEM-530, Topcon SP-3000P and The CellChek XL NCSMs. Results: The mean age was 36.2±9.6 years. The mean ECD was 2809±24.1, 2626±50.4, and 2588±32.1 in measurements with Konan CellCheck XL, Topcon SP-3000P, and Nidek CEM-530 NCSMs, respectively. The difference was statistically significant between Konan CellCheck XL with Nidek CEM-530 and Topcon SP-3000P (p<0.001 for both). The hexagonality ratio results between these 3 devices were statisti cally significant in all paired comparisons (p<0.001, for all). The mean CCT was 534.4±5.0, 553.9±5.6, 567.5±5.3 in measurements with Nidek CEM-530, Konan CellCheck XL, and Topcon SP-3000P, respectively. CCT values obtained with Topcon SP-3000P were found to be higher than with other devices (p<0.001, for both). Conclusion: Among the 3 devices, the highest ECD values were obtained with Konan CellCheck XL and the highest CCT values were obtained with Topcon SP-3000P. On account of the discrepancies in endothelial pa rameters tested in our study, we do not advise using these devices in terchangeably.Amaç: Bu çalışmada, sağlıklı kişilerde Nidek CEM-530 (Nidek Co., Japonya), Konan CellChek XL (Konan Medical, Hyogo, Japonya) ve Topcon SP-3000P (Topcon Corporation, Tokyo, Japonya) temassız speküler mikroskopların [noncontact specular microscopes (NCSM)] endotel hücre yoğunluğu (EHY), morfolojik endotel hücre parametre leri ve santral kornea kalınlığı (SKK) açısından karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Microbial Keratitis After Collagen Cross-linking Treatment
A 33-year-old woman presented with pain, redness, and diminution of vision that occurred 2 days after collagen cross-linking had been
performed for keratoconus in the right eye. Culture results from the patient's contact lens and corneal scrapings were positive for
Staphylococcus epidermidis. According to the results of antibiotic susceptibility testing, the patient was treated with hourly topical
fortified vancomycin and exocin. Before collagen cross-linking, the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 4/10, the manifest refraction
was -7.00 -1.755 3°. Four months after the procedure, the BCVA was 4/10, the manifest refraction was -5.50 -1.75 10°. Slit-lamp
examination revealed a mild residual haze in the upper midperipheral cornea, and stromal opacities had disappeared. Collagen crosslinking
is less invasive compared to other methods for treatment of keratoconus, but epithelial debridement and bandage contact lens
wearing may lead to the development of bacterial keratitis. (Turk J Oph thal mol 2012; 42: 300-2
Evaluation of macular thickness change after inferior oblique muscle recession surgery
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in macular thickness following inferior oblique muscle recession surgery. Materials and Methods: Thirty-eight eyes from 21 patients undergoing ocular muscle surgery were included. Patients were grouped into three groups based on the type of surgical intervention: Group I (n = 12), inferior oblique recession surgery alone; Group II (n = 12), inferior oblique plus horizontal muscle surgery; Group III (n = 14), horizontal muscle surgery alone. Each eye was scanned using the optical coherence tomography (OCT) device preoperatively and on the first postoperative day to measure macular thickness. Results: Following surgery, a significant increase in foveal thickness occurred in Group I (P < 0.05) and Group II (P < 0.01). In addition, a statistically significant difference was observed between the groups with regard to the increase in foveal thickness (P = 0.016), with significantly lower changes in Group III. Conclusion: Our findings suggested that inferior oblique muscle recession surgery is associated with an increase in macular thickness
Evaluation of Visual Outcomes in Patients Implanted with Acri.LISA 356D Multifocal Intraocular Lens
Purpose: To assess the visual results after implantation of the bifocal Acri.LISA 356D intraocular lens (IOL).
Material and Method: Thirty-three eyes of 26 patients who had undergone cataract extraction by phacoemulsification technique
were implanted with Acri.LISA 356 D IOL. All eyes were tested both at far and near distance at mesopic and photopic room
light levels (5 and 85 cd/m2), in the following 1st and 3rd months after the operation. All eyes were tested for far, intermediate
and near visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, refractive errors, glare and visual complaints, and need for spectacles.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 58.2±9.3 years. Out of the 26 patients who participated in the study, nineteen (8
female, 11 male) had unilateral and 7 patients (5 female, 2 male) had bilateral implantation. At 3-month postoperative visit, the
mean best-corrected distance visual acuity was 0.94±0.08, the best distance-corrected near visual acuity was 0.77±0.12 and
the best distance-corrected intermediate (70cm.) visual acuity was 0.67±0.10. Distance visual acuity was significantly better than
intermediate and near visual acuities, while near visual acuity was statistically significantly better than intermediate visual acuity
(p<0.05 for each). Postoperative mean spherical equivalent was -0.85±0.55 D. At 1 month, contrast sensitivity was low, especially
at near under both illumination levels and, at 3 months, low contrast sensitivity level persisted at near under mesopic conditions
only at high spatial frequencies. The incidence of halos was higher in patients with higher astigmatism. Although it
seemed that 74% of patients needed eyeglasses for far, the rate of using eyeglasses was only 15%.
Discussion: The Acri.LISA 356D, which is a bifocal hybrid IOL, provided satisfaction for far/near visual acuity and contrast
sensitivity under photopic and mesopic conditions. However, it is not successful at the same degree for intermediate
distances. (Turk J Ophthalmol 2011; 41: 236-42
