Characteristics of Laboratory Confirmed Ethylene Glycol and Methanol Exposures Reported to a Regional Poison Control Center
Introduction. Ethylene glycol (EG) and methanol (MET) exposuresare rare but can cause significant morbidity and mortality.Though frequently treated similarly, EG and MET exposures havecharacteristics that are not well differentiated in the literature. Wesought to describe the clinical characteristics of EG and MET exposures,confirmed with quantitative serum levels.
Methods. An IRB-approved retrospective review of the Universityof Kansas Health System Poison Control Center database from July2005 to July 2015 identified all EG/MET exposures evaluated ata health care facility. Initial measurements were EG/MET levels,serum pH, serum creatinine, anion gap, serum ethanol level, maxanion gap, max osmolar gap, therapy performed (hemodialysis,fomepizole, ethanol) and death.
Results. The search identified 75 cases, with 59 cases having onlydetectable EG levels and 15 cases having only detectable MET levels.The average EG level was 126 mg/dL (range 5 - 834). The averagedetectable methanol level was 78 mg/dL (range 5 - 396). The averagemaximum anion gap of the EG positive group was 20 mEq/L (range8 - 35). The average maximum anion gap of the MET positive groupwas 14 mEq/L (range 6 - 34). One death was reported in the EG positivegroup, with an initial level of 266 mg/dL.
Conclusions. In this study of EG/MET exposures, EG exposureswere more common than MET exposures, but they had similardemographics, laboratory findings, and interventions. Continuedstudies are warranted to characterize these uncommon exposuresfurther. Kans J Med 2018;11(3):67-69
Quantum Entanglement of Moving Bodies
We study the properties of quantum information and quantum entanglement in
moving frames. We show that the entanglement between the spins and the momenta
of two particles can be interchanged under a Lorentz transformation, so that a
pair of particles that is entangled in spin but not momentum in one reference
frame, may, in another frame, be entangled in momentum at the expense of
spin-entanglement. Similarly, entanglement between momenta may be transferred
to spin under a Lorentz transformation. While spin and momentum entanglement

A survivin gene signature predicts aggressive tumor behavior
Gene signatures that predict aggressive tumor behavior at the earliest stages of disease, ideally before overt tissue abnormalities, are urgently needed. To search for such genes, we generated a transgenic model of survivin, an essential regulator of cell division and apoptosis overexpressed in cancer. Transgenic expression of survivin in the urinary bladder did not cause histologic abnormalities of the urothelium. However, microarray analysis revealed that survivin-expressing bladders exhibited profound changes in gene expression profile affecting extracellular matrix and inflammatory genes. Following exposure to a bladder carcinogen, N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (OH-BBN), survivin transgenic animals exhibited accelerated tumor progression, preferential incidence of tumors as compared with premalignant lesions, and dramatically abbreviated survival. Conversely, transgenic expression of a survivin Thr34--\u3eAla dominant-negative mutant did not cause changes in gene expression or accelerated tumor progression after OH-BBN treatment. Therefore, survivin expression induces global transcriptional changes in the tissue microenvironment that may promote tumorigenesis. Detection of survivin or its associated gene signature may provide an early biomarker of aggressive tumor behavior before the appearance of tissue abnormalities
Discovery of A New Retrograde Trans-Neptunian Object: Hint of A Common Orbital Plane for Low Semi-Major Axis, High Inclination TNOs and Centaurs
Although the majority of Centaurs are thought to have originated in the
scattered disk, with the high-inclination members coming from the Oort cloud,
the origin of the high inclination component of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs)
remains uncertain. We report the discovery of a retrograde TNO, which we
nickname "Niku", detected by the Pan-STARRS 1 Outer Solar System Survey. Our
numerical integrations show that the orbital dynamics of Niku are very similar
to that of 2008 KV (Drac), with a half-life of Myr. Comparing
similar high inclination TNOs and Centaurs ( AU, ), we find that these objects exhibit a surprising clustering of
ascending node, and occupy a common orbital plane. This orbital configuration
has high statistical significance: 3.8-. An unknown mechanism is
required to explain the observed clustering. This discovery may provide a
pathway to investigate a possible reservoir of high-inclination objects.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
The bracteatus pineapple genome and domestication of clonally propagated crops
Domestication of clonally propagated crops such as pineapple from South America was hypothesized to be a 'one-step operation'. We sequenced the genome of Ananas comosus var. bracteatus CB5 and assembled 513 Mb into 25 chromosomes with 29,412 genes. Comparison of the genomes of CB5, F153 and MD2 elucidated the genomic basis of fiber production, color formation, sugar accumulation and fruit maturation. We also resequenced 89 Ananas genomes. Cultivars 'Smooth Cayenne' and 'Queen' exhibited ancient and recent admixture, while 'Singapore Spanish' supported a one-step operation of domestication. We identified 25 selective sweeps, including a strong sweep containing a pair of tandemly duplicated bromelain inhibitors. Four candidate genes for self-incompatibility were linked in F153, but were not functional in self-compatible CB5. Our findings support the coexistence of sexual recombination and a one-step operation in the domestication of clonally propagated crops. This work guides the exploration of sexual and asexual domestication trajectories in other clonally propagated crops
Attributing scientific and technical progress: the case of holography
Holography, the three-dimensional imaging technology, was portrayed widely as a paradigm
of progress during its decade of explosive expansion 1964–73, and during its subsequent
consolidation for commercial and artistic uses up to the mid 1980s. An unusually
seductive and prolific subject, holography successively spawned scientific insights, putative
applications and new constituencies of practitioners and consumers. Waves of forecasts,
associated with different sponsors and user communities, cast holography as a field on the
verge of success—but with the dimensions of success repeatedly refashioned. This retargeting
of the subject represented a degree of cynical marketeering, but was underpinned by
implicit confidence in philosophical positivism and faith in technological progressivism.
Each of its communities defined success in terms of expansion, and anticipated continual
progressive increase. This paper discusses the contrasting definitions of progress in holography,
and how they were fashioned in changing contexts. Focusing equally on reputed ‘failures’ of some aspects of the subject, it explores the varied attributes by which success and failure were linked with progress by different technical communities. This important case illuminates the peculiar post-World War II environment that melded the military, commercial and popular engagement with scientific and technological subjects, and the
competing criteria by which they assessed the products of science

BioTIME: A database of biodiversity time series for the Anthropocene.
MotivationThe BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene.Main types of variables includedThe database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. In addition, the database contains metadata relating to sampling methodology and contextual information about each record.Spatial location and grainBioTIME is a global database of 547,161 unique sampling locations spanning the marine, freshwater and terrestrial realms. Grain size varies across datasets from 0.0000000158 km2 (158 cm2) to 100 km2 (1,000,000,000,000 cm2).Time period and grainBioTIME records span from 1874 to 2016.
