    The LCO/Palomar 10,000 km/sec Cluster Survey. I. Properties of the Tully-Fisher Relation

    The first results from a Tully-Fisher (TF) survey of cluster galaxies are presented. The galaxies are drawn from fifteen Abell clusters that lie in the redshift range 9000-12,000 km/sec and are distributed uniformly around the celestial sky. The data set consists of R-band CCD photometry and long- slit H-alpha spectroscopy. The rotation curves (RCs) are characterized by a turnover radius (r_t) and an asymptotic velocity v_a, while the surface brightness profiles are characterized in terms of an effective exponential surface brightness I_e and a scale length r_e. The TF scatter is minimized when the rotation velocity is measured at 2.0 +/- 0.2 r_e; a significantly larger scatter results when the rotation velocity is measured at > 3 or < 1.5 scale lengths. This effect demonstrates that RCs do not have a universal form, as has been suggested by Persic, Salucci, and Stel. In contrast to previous studies, a modest but statistically significant surface-brightness dependence of the TF relation is found, log v = const + 0.28*log L + 0.14*log I_e. This indicates a stronger parallel between the TF relation and the FP relations of elliptical galaxies than has previously been recognized.     Angular separations of the lensed QSO images

    We have analyzed the observed image separations of the gravitationally lensed images of QSOs for a possible correlation with the source redshift. Contrary to the previously noted anti-correlation based on a smaller data set, no correlation is found for the currently available data. We have calculated the average image separations of the lensed QSOs as a function of source redshifts, for isothermal spheres with cores in a flat universe, taking into account the amplification bias caused by lensing. The shape of the distribution of average image separation as a function of redshift is very robust and is insensitive to most model parameters. Observations are found to be roughly consistent with the theoretical results for models which assume the lens distribution to be (i) Schechter luminosity function which, however, can not produce images with large separation and (ii) the mass condensations in a cold dark matter universe, as given by the Press-Schechter theory if an upper limit of 1-7×1013\times 10^{13} M⊙\odot is assumed on the mass of the condensations.Comment: 20 pages, 7 postscript figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    The Local Velocity Anomaly

    There is a velocity discontinuity at about 7 Mpc between the galaxies of the Local Sheet that are moving together with low internal velocity dispersion and the adjacent structures. The Local Sheet bounds the Local Void. The Local Sheet is determined to have a peculiar velocity of 260 km/s away from the center of the void. In order for this large velocity to be generated by an absence of gravity, the Local Void must be at least 45 Mpc in diameter and be very empty.Comment: Invited review, "Galaxies in the Local Volume", Sydney, 8-13 July, 2007. eds.     Coherent dynamics of photoinduced nucleation processes

    We study the dynamics of initial nucleation processes of photoinduced structural change of molecular crystals. In order to describe the nonadiabatic transition in each molecule, we employ a model of localized electrons coupled with a fully quantized phonon mode, and the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for the model is numerically solved. We found a minimal model to describe the nucleation induced by injection of an excited state of a single molecule in which multiple types of intermolecular interactions are required. In this model coherently driven molecular distortion plays an important role in the successive conversion of electronic states which leads to photoinduced cooperative phenomena.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    The Correlation Between Galaxy HI Linewidths and K' Luminosities

    The relationship between galaxy luminosities and rotation rates is studied with total luminosities in the K' band. Extinction problems are essentially eliminated at this band centered at 2.1 micron. A template luminosity-linewidth relation is derived based on 65 galaxies drawn from two magnitude-limited cluster samples. The zero-point is determined using 4 galaxies with accurately known distances. The calibration is applied to give the distance to the Pisces Cluster (60 Mpc) at a redshift in the CMB frame of 4771 km/s. The resultant value of the Hubble Constant is 81 km/s/Mpc. The largest sources of uncertainty arises from the small number of zero-point calibrators at this time at K' and present application to only one cluster.Comment: 13 pages including 5 figures and 2 tables.     Quantifying the value of problem structuring interventions?

    We review the current work on measuring and evaluating PSM interventions and return to the paradox of trying to determine a specific monetary value. In an attempt to resolve the paradox, we have borrowed freely from economic theory and constructed a scenario where the question of value can be investigated through the effect that a problem structuring intervention will have on information asymmetry in contract formation. This suggests an avenue of research where the value of problem structuring interventions can be investigated empirically. We discuss the difficulties of research design to investigate this question but also the potential benefits.European Commissio

    Orientation isotope effect in ion–molecule reactions

This model is based upon (1) the fact that the displacement of the center of polarizability from the center of mass in the HD molecule will affect the alignment of the reactants, (2) the fact that, for many ions X+, reaction must occur by a surface crossing mechanism, and (3) the assumption that the ratio XH+/(XH++XD+) equals the fraction of intimate collisions in which the H end of HD is oriented towards the ion at the moment the reactants pass over the centrifugal barrier in the effective radial potential (or cross over to the X–HD+ surface if the crossing occurs before the centrifugal barrier is reached). Use of the ion–induced dipole potential for the reactants permits the derivation of an analytic expression for the KIE. With no adjustable parameters, this model accounts quantitatively for the very different KIE’s observed in the reactions of Ar+ and Kr+ with HD at low collision energies

    Gas Rich Dwarfs from the PSS-II III. HI Profiles and Dynamical Masses

    We present Arecibo neutral hydrogen data on a sample of optically selected dwarf galaxies. The sample ranges in HI mass from 10^6 M_sun to 5x10^9 M_sun, with a mean of 7.9x10^8 M_sun. Using estimated HI radii, the HI surface densities range from 0.6 to 20 M_sun pc^-2, all well below the critical threshold for star formation (Kennicutt 1998). M_HI/L values of the LSB dwarfs range from 0.3 to 12 with a mean value of 2.0. Dynamical masses, calculated from the HI profile widths, range from 10^8 M_sun to 10^11 M_sun. There is a strong correlation between optical luminosity and dynamical mass for LSB dwarfs implying that the dark matter (whether baryonic or non-baryonic) follows the detectable baryonic matter.Comment: 53 pages, AASTeX v4.0, 8 figures, to be published in ApJ Suppl, images, tables and referee report can be found at http://zebu.uoregon.edu/~j

    Sedentary behaviours and cognitive function among community dwelling adults aged 50+ years:Results from the Irish longitudinal study of ageing

    Background: Sedentary behaviours (SB) are risk factors for poor cardiovascular health and all-cause mortality. However, their role in cognitive health in older adults is unclear. A few studies have examined associations between sedentary behaviours and cognition, but are limited by heterogeneity and insufficient longitudinal analyses. Therefore more robust studies, which would address identified limitations, are needed to accurately determine associations. Method: This study analysed data collected from participants aged 50+ years of The Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA). We conducted cross-sectional linear regression with multivariate imputation analyses of baseline data from wave 1 (N = 8163, weekday-sitting time), and wave 3 (N = 6400, weekday-television viewing); longitudinal analyses between waves 1\u20133 (sitting) and waves 3\u20134 (television). Sedentary behaviours were analysed as both categorical and continuous variables. Outcome of cross-sectional analyses was standardised regression co-efficient of associations between sedentary exposures and cognitive function in respective waves, while for longitudinal analyses was cognitive change (verbal memory, verbal fluency, and global cognition) between waves based on standardised residuals. Result: Study found significant but mild cross-sectional associations between 1-h increase in weekday-television viewing and poorer verbal memory (b = 120.02, CI: 120.04, 120.003, P &lt; 0.05) and verbal fluency (b = 120.02, CI: 120.04, 120.002, P &lt; 0.05). Baseline television viewing of 3.5+ h/day had mild but significant association with a decline in verbal fluency 2 years later in participants aged 65+ years, when compared with a reference category of &lt;1.5 h of TV viewing (b = 120.12, CI: 120.23, 120.001, P &lt; 0.05). Conclusion: Our study findings indicated some association between increased levels of weekday-television viewing time, independent of physical activity, and poor cognition cross-sectionally and longitudinally in middle-aged and older adults. Intervention studies are needed to confirm the effects of SB on cognition in older adults. Public health campaigns should be targeted at displacing high levels of television viewing, in excess of 3.5 h/day among older adults. \ua9 2020 Elsevier Lt
