Interview with Elliot Dynes

Elliott Dynes (he/him) was born in 2001, in Irvine California, where he was raised. At the recommendation of a friend, he attended the Orange County School for the Arts, where he discovered his love of film. While in high school Dynes spent a lot of time making YouTube videos with his friends and playing lacrosse. He applied to many schools, but ultimately decided on Columbia College Chicago and moved halfway across the country for a total change of pace. While there, Dynes quickly made many friends, and was therefore reluctant to return to Irvine amidst the pandemic. He also spent his time prior to COVID on sets and on freelance film editing jobs for clients. Dynes spent the Fall 2020 semester on campus in Chicago. Some Contributions of Psychology to the Conception of Justice

The two general standpoints from which all attempts to define justice and rights proceed, are that of the individual and that of the social whole. From the standpoint of the individual, we have such principles as \u27to every man according to his deserts,\u27 or \u27to every man according to his needs,\u27 as well as the stubbornly surviving principle of natural rights, which is imbedded in our institutions even though discredited by philosophers. From the standpoint of society, we have the principle that justice means the determining of individual relations by the general order and the subordinating of individual to public interests. From the individualistic standpoint, rights come before justice. Rights are the positive factor; justice is merely a term for the sum of individual rights, or a negative restraint upon interference. From the other standpoint, right and justice come, logically, if not historically, before rights. Before I can say whether a claim is a right I must prove it to be just, to be right; but just and right are terms which historically spring from law and custom, and which logically imply a general standard or authority. The two standpoints are both employed, by utilitarianism when it asserts, on the one hand, that every man is to count as one, and, on the other, that acts are right as they tend to the greatest happiness of the greatest number. They are curiously conjoined in the thinking of the man, who claims for his own vested interests the utmost freedom and protection and at the same time condones child labor or the sweatshop or the extermination of a race, on the ground that individuals must of course be sacrificed to the general progress

Network Based Malware Defense

This goal of this research was to create a network-based malware quarantine system and test the effectiveness of it on the speed of worm propagation across a virtual network. Worms that spread in epidemic ways cause a large amount of financial and digital damage to the average Internet user while posing threats to the infrastructure of the Internet. This impact on consumers and the Internet as a whole can be significantly reduced through the implementation of a quarantine system at the network level. The quarantine system tested combined a network based vulnerability scanner, a Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS), and a custom written control system to detect malware behavior on a network, and segregate those potentially compromised hosts from other hosts, with the intention of slowing the propagation of a network worm. A virtual test environment was used to track the propagation of a custom written worm as it spread to virtualized test machines. Before each test, the network was cleared of malware and the speed of propagation was documented. This data was analyzed to determine the most effective configuration that will still maintain network usability. After testing four variants of the custom worm with four different variations on the quarantine system configuration the spread data and quarantine system logs were analyzed to determine that the quarantine was in fact very effective against the spread and was able to slow or stop it in almost all simulations

The 3-D clustering of radio galaxies in the TONS survey

We present a clustering analysis of the Texas-Oxford NVSS Structure (TONS) radio galaxy redshift survey. This complete flux-limited survey consists of 268 radio galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in three separate regions of the sky covering a total of 165 deg^2. By going to faint radio flux densities (s_1.4>3 mJy) but imposing relatively bright optical limits (E R 19.5), the TONS sample is optimised for looking at the clustering properties of low luminosity radio galaxies in a region of moderate (0 < z < 0.5) redshifts. We use the two point correlation function to determine the clustering strength of the combined TONS08 and TONS12 sub-samples and find a clustering strength of r_0(z)=8.7+/-1.6 Mpc (h=0.7). If we assume growth of structure by linear theory and that the median redshift is 0.3, this corresponds to r_0(0)=11.0+/-2.0 Mpc which is consistent with the clustering strength of the underlying host galaxies (~ 2.5 Lstar ellipticals) of the TONS radio galaxy population.Comment: 18 pages, MNRAS accepted.
